View Full Version : Leg Press for Home?
petvan Sat, January 6th, 2007, 05:21 PM Hi All,
I'm curious what, beyond Titan's which I can't do right now, folks are using at home as a leg press? I'm in the market for something like PowerTec's leg press, which is both compact in size, and at 549 list, in my price range.
However, I'm almost 6'4 and am not sure that this thing has the extension I'd need, esp since I'll need to use it for calf raises.
Anyone have or seen anything compact that might work well? I don't see much in the forums here, so sorry if I've missed something obvious in the archives.
Thanks
Pete

I think you will find that Powertec too short for you. I'm 6.1 and bought a Yukon P-150 Angled Leg Press (Vertical) that would fit you easily and it is less money also. It takes up less room than most and is built well.

Barbell Bulgarian squats, and dumbell Bulgarian squats.

jonpaul Tue, January 16th, 2007, 10:55 AM I would recommend just squatting too. Why leg press at all? Surely the good old squat is best?

Digging up an older thread here as I'm still shopping.
I actually don't care for leg press at all, but at home don't have a great way to do calf raises.
I'm now getting ready for a Waterbury Method cycle for example, and can do all the exercises save for for the calf raises. I figured a leg press would be good for this, and would let my wife do leg presses since she's not yet comfortable with squatting (though we're working on that)

HevyMetal Fri, March 23rd, 2007, 12:09 AM All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth...and a Leg Press Machine.
Don't know what it is about Leg Press Machines.....every time I see one I want to stack it with as many 45's as I can find and then see if I can get the suckahs airborne.
Just can't say the same about a Squat rack and BB for some reason..

You could always just do standing calf raises using the edge of your bottom stair -- or anything else raised for that matter. If you need more of a challenge, do them one-legged, put on a weighted vest, hold a dumbell, or slap some plates into a rucksack. Cheap as chips.
I'm doing Waterburys ABBH at the moment, and this is exactly what I do for my calf raises. I find it works fine.

Barbell calf raises, one leg at a time. This takes the compression off your back too.

I have been doing them on my powertec rack, basically using the base of the frame to leverage off of, and the frame for stability. However, with 150+ lbs I find balance a real inhibitor.
I bought a sky king calf thingy which is a spring based calf workout which seems to work ok, but I don't think really the ideal movement from a hypertrophy standpoint.
I have used ABBH too and really liked it btw. Great programs all of them. I'm doing the WM as I haven't reallly done a total body program before, and figure this will be a good change from the 3-4 day body part splits I've been doing.
