View Full Version : anybody can help me with my hip injury?
Anne Date Tue, January 2nd, 2007, 11:32 AM Hello to the wonderful people here, I am so glad to find this cool forum. :claphigh:so many interesting things and so much to learn. :tucool:
I am wondering if anybody can give me some advise about my injury on my hip.
I do lots of running, i run average 90k and above per week 6 days a week. i am very much into marathons, my goal is to finish the marathon at 2hours 57mins in the next 2 years and i have been working really hard on it:drool:
Usually after a very long run i tend to get a very very sore hip which i could t sit for too long. it s feels like pins and needles from my left hip all the way to left knee. really uncomfortbale. i nomally do lots of inner thigh and hamstring stretching.
But things gets worse after the race last month. I can feel the pain every second and many time i have to stop running becuz the sharp pain from my hip to the origin of my hamstring. i feel like i am just one step way to disabled.. i cried , not for the pain but for the goal i hope to achieve...
also the bad hip is causing more problems now including the opposite knee, shin and calf as well as my neck. it s all from the bad running posture to compensate the bad hip.
my silly qustions are: is this injury can be fixed or am i going to be fine? is it a very common running injury? what can i do to help beside take a long break from run:p:doh:
(Please forgive my imperfect English - it's my second language:o)
Tks in advance, Anne

Welcom here. It's clear that you are serious about running.
You are running a lot more weekly distance than what many coaches believe is safe. I think you're going about twice the distance at which knee injury risk starts to increase dramatically.
The six days a week sounds wrong to me too. I think you want more rest days to get the benefit of your training.
Do you have a coach? I think at the level you are talking about, you really need qualified advice.

I've thought about it a little more. Since you have pain from the long runs, I would stop doing them immediately. I don't think it's the most common injury - I think lower limb injuries are more common.
But it does sound like an injury, and it sounds like you got way past a safe training program. I think you need to resolve the injury first. Then I think you need a training program that will not injure you, before you get back to training.

First off, your English is fine. =) Secondly, that is a lot of miles for anyone to be running, but especially a female runner. 40 miles a week is pretty huge training, but you probably either need a break, some crosstraining, or to cut the miles back a little for awhile. We had one woman on our XC team doing 50 a week for a couple weeks, but I don't think she maintained it.
Also, at that distance and the speed in which you're going to run the marathon, I would definitely try to snag a coach or something, because training on your own like that is asking for injuries =).
About the hip thing: my advice is to go see a sports medicine doctor or something of the sort, because it is really hard to diagnose injuries on a forum.
Anne Date Tue, January 2nd, 2007, 01:42 PM Thanks thanks.. One thing I must must do tomorrow is to see my physico, hope she will fix me.:gl:
I have been involved in competitive sports since I was 8years old in sports school. From a 100meter 200meter runner. Now I play professional hockey for Singapore, 4 years ago I had an idea to run a marathon, just wanted to know how it feels. I did my last mini training, I ran on the treadmill 20minis a day for one month (sorry to say that but it was really really boring!!! i have not been on the treadmill after that:nono:) I finished my first ever marathon in 3hours 20 minis in Singapore (32 degree and 90% humidity:drool:) I was really happy and I thought what if I take it a bit serious? I can be a good runner!!!! Cool. Let do it!!! My running journey begins,,,,,,,,,
The reason I did not get a coach to help me in running is because I have to compromise with my hockey training. I could not take the commitments by running coach, tried but did not work, some how I worked it nicely by myself but not for this injury!!!!!
tasb89 Wed, January 10th, 2007, 12:31 PM This sounds like a classic case of Illiotibial Band Syndrome. This is a common running injury.
You can google it and get more info, but the usual treatment is anti inflammatorys, ice after run and stretch, stretch, stretch.
The most effective stretch is the yoga pose called the pigeon. Again if you Google that you will get many descriptions.
Don't worry, this IS something you can get over. I get it all the time when my mileage gets up to about 18 miles on my long runs.
Stretch every day. Hold for 30 seconds. Try to stretch 3 times a day if possible. Also stretches for your periformis and hamstrings will help, as the entire area tends to tighten up.
Anne Date Sun, January 21st, 2007, 04:12 AM Thanks very much TASB89. I have been stretch a lot, My flexibility improves and my hip is almost 90% recovered.amazing!! i also use tennis ball to massage. everything works!!!:tu::tucool: Cool!!! Thanks lots, you saved me!!!!
off for a run bye for now :jumping::jumping::jumping::jumping::jumping::jump ing:
PAF Sun, January 21st, 2007, 08:58 AM Glad you're recovering Anne, but the points Zen and Big_D made are still valid. 90 miles of running a week is huge! And you play hockey regularly as well? You might be superhuman but if you're not I think that will eventually catch up to you as the years go by. You may want to cut back on the miles run and supplement with swimming or cycling.
