View Full Version : Alcohol and Losing Weight?
uffda Sun, November 19th, 2006, 03:40 PM Whenever I end up drinking a lot (not too often), my weight will drop significantly, in the realm of 4-5 pounds in a couple days. And then stay down. I assumed I was probably just dehydrating myself but it doesn't seem to go back up, even when I make sure to drink at least a gallon of water a day. Where is the weight going? Its exceptionally confusing to me, because otherwise I've been stuck around 218 with small changes for a couple weeks and I drank A LOT friday and ate pretty crappy, and I'm at 213 today. It seems like the exact opposite of what should be happening?
Hort Sun, November 19th, 2006, 03:46 PM You're driving water out, plain and simple.
Alcohol inhibits both fat loss and protein synthesis.
dluc Sun, November 19th, 2006, 04:03 PM Unfortunately I experience the opposite. When I go out and have drinks along with buffalo chicken fingers and fries, I find my weight increases by a couple lbs the next morning. But like most weight gained from a cheat meal, it doesn't take long for that weight to go away (1 or 2 days).

Ditto.

uffda Sun, November 19th, 2006, 04:21 PM Shouldn't my weight jump back up though over the next few days as i'm drinking more water though?

Not just by drinking water, no. It can has as much to do with your diet, especially carb intake.
And it may just take a while (to head back up).
SwoleCat Sun, November 19th, 2006, 05:52 PM I gave up alcohol long ago because of the negative effects that it had on me. Not only would my progress stall, but I'd feel like crap for days after. Not even hung over, just like my body had been poisoned. After eating very healthy for so long, lifting, doing cardio, etc., it is just like poison to my body.
The only time I have a drink or two is when I am in Vegas on vacation at the crap table doublin' my money. Other than that, I don't touch the stuff and won't.

betastas Sun, November 19th, 2006, 06:41 PM I'm beginning to see the merit in no alcohol myself. My lifts have improved and I'm feeling better overall. Consider limiting your intake. I like to just walk around with a drink or a beer for a few hours, that way people think you're drinking and don't pester you about it. Works wonders, and I have a great time to boot.
Jokat Mon, November 20th, 2006, 02:29 AM Hi,
I cut out all alcohol about 6+ months ago and I have never felt better. I used to drink a lot, especially in my teens. It became a mental thing for me in that I didn't believe that I could have fun without drinking. That was by far the hardest part for me, learning that you can have just as much fun (if not more) without drinking. Luckily most of my friend have been supportive. I was not an alchoholic in that I had to drink every day but on the other hand I was in that I had to drink to have fun. Alcohol serves no purpose in the sport of bodybuilding IMHO. I am better off without it.
Hort Mon, November 20th, 2006, 11:16 AM ABout the only alcohol I have these days is a single glass of good red wine maybe once a month or so... I'll have a beer maybe a few times a year at most for the same reasons as mentioned above.
yeah.. we're getting old.
