I've been doing LISS for 45 minutes at night around 10-11 PM (last meal would have been at the latest 8 PM or so.

I want to switch to HIIT cause it is more fun and obviously less boring.

Now here come the questions for HIIT:

Morning or Night?
Eat before, after or both before and after?
Eat pro/carb meal before/after?
How long should wait before doing HIIT if I do eat, and how long do I wait to eat after doing HIIT?

I've looked some of these questions up on the net and there seems to be a controversy about everything. I was just wondering what john did as far as eating before and after his HIIT sessions.

You've been doing cardio at night before bed?

You eat nothing after? How can you sleep after doing that??

As far as HIIT, I'll let the others chime in, that's not my gig.

5a first thing in the morning, fasted. Meal afterwards depends on whether I'm cutting or bulking.

Not eating after cardio, especially for 6-8 hours or whatever the duration of sleep, is EXTREMELY catabolic!!!

One of the worst things you can do IMHO.

A.M. fasted, then eat after and begin the day. Sets the metabolism for the rest of the day at an elevated rate.

When you retire for the night (sleep) the metabolism slows down like crazy. So doing cardio to up the metabolism then retiring immediately is the equivalent of pissin' in the wind. Couple that w/not eating and entering catabolism 101, it's a gale force wind.

I believe the general consensus is to either do LISS for 45-60 mins fasted or to have a meal and then do the HIIT. I've seen people do other versions of this. I believe John did fasted HIIT. In terms of fatloss it obviously worked for him, but then again he was also eating like 1500 calories...

My best suggestion is to do the cardio that you can stick with. Doing the cardio is more important than the actual type/timing. However for OPTIMAL results in fatloss and body composition change, I'de probably stick with the first two options I gave you.

Morning or midday.... I wouldn't right before bed but that's an "up to you"

Eat before and after. I'd never do HIIT fasted....like ever.
I'd eat like you eat before and after weight training.

How long depends on the meal size and composition. No need to wait after doing HIIT.

Fat loss isn't some magical thing that occurs in the moment. It's the cumulative effects over time. Ditto on weight training.

What and how you eat in the days leading up to training and the days following are more important IMHO.

Morning or Night?
Either.

Eat before, after or both before and after?
I would treat it like weightlifting. What do you do before/after that?

Eat pro/carb meal before/after?
If you want.

How long should wait before doing HIIT if I do eat, and how long do I wait to eat after doing HIIT?

I agree with this. My view is that you can exercise a whole lot pretty much whenever you feel like it, but any time you do significant exercise, you want to eat some calories to go with it. Some carbs with a little protein makes the most sense to me.

The research comes up with something like a two hour window after exercise before you need take in calories. You can't really get away with 8 hours, even though you might not feel that bad. You don't have to eat as many calories as you burn, though, but no calories at all is definitely the wrong answer.
