View Full Version : hacking iFit workouts

Just wondering if anyone else has a desire to create their own iFIT workouts for treadmill or elliptical. Ifit.com sucks, the workouts suck and the site is cumbersome and clunky. I have figured out how to do it, my own music, resistance and pace changes, length of workout, etc. I put them in MP3 format and put them on my Ipod. It works great with my Reebok elliptical (rl900) I'll try it with the Precor stuff at the gym this week. I do gobs of cardio, just trying to relieve the monotony a bit:) If I could just figure out how to change the ramp....I don't think my machine can do that. If anyone is interested, lemme know.

Look into audio books. You can download them directly off some sites.

My point was that I figured out how to hack IFIT workouts, I like to roll my own.:o
I haven't made a workout using an audiobook but that is a good idea. I just like making my own workouts, my tunes, etc. I could probably add a control track to a movie file, I've got Southpark, rock movies (Queen w/Paul Rodgers) action sports movies, etc. on my video ipod. Like I said, I do a lot of cardio. I just thought there might be someone else who might like to know how to do it:)

About to do some morning LISS now. First time in months.

I'm a big fan of audiobooks during workouts. My favorite is using audible.com's newspaper service. They throw in a complementary audio subscription to the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times. They are great for the treadmill/elliptical. 45-60 minutes in length, and they come in at 5:30am every day. I listen to the journal myself, and its a good way to get the concise business news for the day. The length is perfect for a workout too. I never like listening to fiction during a workout; if my mind wanders (as it is prone to doing) I'll have missed something vital. Newspapers and other periodicals (audible has a bunch to listen to) are great, since I don't mind so much if I miss part of an article.

Neat, that's actually the site i have bookmarked. :)

How do you listen to them? I pretty new to this type of stuff.

I have a phone/PDA combo now , and audible's program will automatically download it directly to your device over the cellular network, or wi-fi. It was downloaded right before I woke up, and I was ready to go do cardio. I never even need to connect to a PC.

Before I had the fancy new PDA, I used a cheap Sandisk Sansa E140 ($60). Audible does RSS feeds, and it would automatically download the program at about 5:30am (for a newspaper). As soon as I woke up, I plugged in my mp3 player and transferred it over. Took about 2 minutes. I still use the Sansa when I go on runs, since it is much lighter than my PDA.

Only caveat is that not all mp3 players support audible. They use some protected format only a few devices support. Ipods of all variety are definitely supported, but you can check their site to see if your device works. My Sandisk works perfectly with it.

It really makes me feel productive with my cardio. I'm a total news junkie, and I never get time to read the newspaper. I can get a summarized form of the news (I don't know about the New York Times, but the Wall Street Journal usually has the headlines, 2-3 of the headline stories, the editorials, and a special feature article in each section) every day of the week. I really can't recommend it highly enough.

Neat little system that iFit. I used it for my Pro-form elliptical before the motor went bad. I also purchased a program online to make my own workouts. I have the program if anyone is interested. I can also tell you where to download it from. Just in case anyone is interested.

That's great that you wrote a program. I'm sure that's what the guy that was selling his program did. I think it has something to do with the signals the mp3 sends to the iFit module on your machine. Good work.

Actually, I was gonna write a program but I found one that did it, probably the same program you used. It is called I2workout, you can still find it out there on some download sites. I use that program to make the "chirps" that control the machine. I then play the workout, and record the chirps into some multitrack recording software I have. I then import other audio (mp3s) and use them as the background music. You have to mute the audio during the chirps or the machine won't respond to them. Once I've added all the tunes and stuff, I mix it down to an MP3 and put it on my Ipod. It's not that complex, it sounds like a lot of grief but it's worth it to me because of the amount of cardio that I do. It gets old just putting the machine at one resistance and ramp, I like to mix it up a bit.

I like doing it this way because I can make effective, progressively tougher workouts instead of using the canned Ifit ones. I also tell myself to drink water every five minutes, I forget otherwise!

cyclone, Do you have the newer version of the software? I've found an older version on some download sites but it has some bugs. Unfortunately, the author has shut down downloading of the software from his site www.i2workout.com (http://www.i2workout.com)

Thanks.

Am interested in purchasing a registered copy of this program. Run marathons and ultra marathons and this would be great.
Can I purchase a copy from you, as the site is now shut down.
Thanks for your time.

I'm at work right now. I have the program on my PC at home. The program zipped is about 1.5mb. If you can handle that in email then I can send you the program. I don't know the restrictions on it as far as it being unregistered. I might be able to hook you up with the guy that wrote the program for a registration number.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Please do send the program via email. Think my box will hold. Tested with a 2.8mb and it worked.

Can't wait to get started using it!

Please see if you can hook me up with the guy who wrote it so I can pay him for it and register it. Appreciate his work and do want to see that he is paid for it.

If there is anything I can help you with in the future, let me know.

I'm at work now so I can't give you the information because it's on my home computer. I'll send you the same email I sent to Racingmachine. Its contents include the program and the an email address I had for the author about a year or two ago. I don't know if it's still valid. If you don't need the program, let me know and I'll send just the email address.

I haven't heard back from Racingmachine if he was able to get in touch with the author.

Give me your email address and I'll send you an email. You can put it here, or if you like, send me a personal message.

On second thought, would NEbuddy object to me posting the file and the author's email address that I have right here on this post? Or in a new post?

I don't know why the author doesn't support the program anymore so I can't see any problem with putting up a zip file and an email address to get registered?

I forget how the shareware license works. Do you get to make full length routines with the shareware, or is it time limited until you get the full version?

Well, it has been a couple of weeks and I have heard nothing back? I guess the programmer is not selling product keys anymore.

Oh well, I have made plenty of routines to last me a while, and maybe the program doesn't actually expire, who knows.

Anyway thanks again for helping me out, Later!

First of all, doesn't Apple own all the rights to "i" words ---> iFit

I downloaded the version that was posted in an earlier post. Works like a champ. I even had my wife re-record the words. Its much sexier than the robot lady. :)

So heres the deal, I'm great with computers/music etc... I don't have the first clue how to build a workout for my iFit treadmill. I totally understand the program and have made a few mp3 to use, but I used the predefined workout. I can change the setting and even understand what they do. How do I know what right for my body? I'm a complete beginner when it comes to health and working out.

Thanks for any advice!!

PS.
Has anyone figured out with the limitation is on this(free) version?

Thanks a million,

Sabbath

Hi. I'm the guy who put the file up on here. The author doesn't seem to be supporting it anymore. I tried the program the other day and I found the limitation. It's a 30 second delay in starting the program. With the fully registered version there wasn't that 30 second delay. Maybe the verison I post up here has the restriction lifted? I don't know. But I'll try and check it out.

As far as workouts go, if you were doing HIIT training then you would follow those guidelines. I don't do HIIT but it's something like 30 seconds at full speed and 60 seconds at slow. And repeat, for like 20 minutes.

If you're doing long running routines then you would set it up any way you like. You might try to reproduce your outside running methods on the treadmill.

You just need to get a card reader. They're like 10-15 bucks at best buy or wal-mart. I have a universal card reader I bought at best buy 2 years ago for $11 that works great for sd cards. Save the mp3 normally and you shouldn't have any problems.

So do the SD cards just contain a series of MP3 files?

I'm thinking of getting a Nordic Track treadmill that uses SD cards and would like to program my own workouts, is the format of the files available?

I would really like the ability to create our own workouts!

I wonder if it has to do with the chirps? When utilizing one of the built-in programs, the chirps that the treadmill makes sound quite different than the chirps produced by the program.

Do the treadmill's that have been successful with the program have the same general sound for the chirps that the program produces?

I'm guessing here that your treadmill takes the SD cards. I wonder if this type don't respond to audio chirps?

You have to mute the music during the chirps. I did this using a music editing program called Adobe Audition that I happen to own. I'm sure there is a shareware multitracking program that'll do it. I just pulled down the volume of the L and R music channels for the duration of the chirp.

It was really more trouble than it was worth, IMHO:) I made a couple of workouts but now I just watch movies on my Ipod during my cardio.

Look into audio books. You can download them directly off some sites.

You can get audio books from your local library for free. Some libraries have it so you can even download books. The files become inactive after 2 or 3 weeks, but that should be enough time to listen to an entire book.

Actually this program does it all for you. After you create your workout you can go to the File menu and create mp3. once you are in there you can add mp3's to the workout and it will tell you how much % of the workout each song is taking up. It will add them so you know when to stop adding music. Once you are done adding. You can export the file to a folder of your choice and load it to your ipod. It is very quick and much better than going thru the time to run it all thru software and have to automate the mutes..this program does it for you!

Hi,
I'm the current developer for ifit, and I can provide a little insight.

The ifit audio versions have a purple logo, and use what we call chirp technology to talk to the machine. This has been replaced with our ifit cards, which use a data card to contain the workout data, which won't understand the chirps.

I'm currently working on tools that will allow the users to customize their workouts, and would be interested in input as to what is wanted.

Hello,

I work on a Macintosh with iMovie and Final Cut Studio. Would it be possible to get a file that contains all of the control sounds (chirps) available with their labels? Once I get them it will be easy to incorporate them into my home movies with a musical background.

Thanks,

Already have the chirp technology specs from the i2Workout (former) website and have developed my own program to control chirp technology treadmills. Any info on file specs, how to change treadmill incline/speed, etc. for the SD card technology would be very helpful. TIA.

Since the author of i2Workout isn't supporting his program, here's a link to the full program with the 30-day limitation disabled. Since I'm not allowed to upload more than about 500k to this forum at this time, maybe somebody else can DL the file from the link below and upload it to this forum. I'll leave the file on my webspace for a couple weeks.

http://gallery.in-tch.com/~cwareham/i2woFull/i2woFull.zip (http://gallery.in-tch.com/~cwareham/i2woFull/i2woFull.zip)

Instructions: unzip the files (the original zipped installation file is contained within this zip file). Install the original program, then replace it with the file 'i2Workout.exe'. No more 30-day limitation/nag screen.

If the author of i2Workout gets bent out of shape, I'll remove this and maybe he can support his program in some way.

I can buy the cards from Sears but they want me to go to the next level instead of just increasing the length of time for the lower level--can we expect to see something that would limit the speed and elevation to level one and allow only increased time? As an old, out of shape person I need to take it slow while I build gradually back into shape to go to a faster speed.

Thx

Since the author of i2Workout isn't supporting his program, here's a link to the full program with the 30-day limitation disabled.

Thanks for the program. It works great except for one minor thing. When I use the preprogramed and the custom workouts on my treadmill, the display shows vertical bars for each segment. I can see what I've done as well as what is coming up. When the treadmill is on manual, the display shows progress around a quarter mile oval, like a track. The display for the I2workouts shows the track, not the vertical bars. Is there any way to get the bars for the I2workouts? I read all the help menus, but maybe I missed something.

For anyone using this program, it's a good idea to keep the zip file. My computer shut down during a power outage when the program was open. When I rebooted, the program was completely disabled and I had to reinstall it. The i2wo.exe setup file wouldn't work. I had to unzip the downloaded file again.

Hi ( my first post)

I have been hanging around this forum for a while wondering should I get involved. There has been some posts about i2 Workout and it is a pity that the site is no longer available. I have used the programme for quite some time and even paid for a proper copy a number of years ago.

In previous posts there was some talk about how the programme controls the treadmill. The developer (Mike Curiale) had worked out the "Chirps" format and made a programme available on the website to operate treadmills.

But the website has closed down :( However there are other websites which have been copying websites like a backup service as nothing seems permanent on the internet.

I found it with

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.i2workout.com

They have been storing it from 2003 to 2008. I downloaded the Chirp programme from the archives as a test so that bit works. They may not archive big data programmes. Try 08 AUG 2006, that seems to be a working copy of the site. There are full instructions on how to use the i2 workout programme.

Please share how did you do this in NordiacTrack treadmill? Is this software supposed to be compatible with all Treadmills?

Hi

I would say that the equipment manufacturers have moved on from the Chirp type control system. The newer types probably will not obey the chirp commands.

How do you take a workout you created and move it along with music onto a cd or mp3 player?

Do you have to run the music and the workout alone or do they run together?

I assume that the workout you created is of the chirp type.
You can use the programme I2Workout developed by Mike Curiale. There is a menu button in the programme for doing that.
On the other hand if you have an audio editing programme you can lay the two tracks side by side and merge them into one track. Then burn it to a CD.:tu:

You can use the programme I2Workout developed by Mike Curiale. There is a menu button in the programme for doing that.
On the other hand if you have an audio editing programme you can lay the two tracks side by side and merge them into one track. Then burn it to a CD.:tu:

That is the program I have. Question I have for you is, "What is a good audio editing program to use for this?" I have used one from Nero once but I no longer have it. I currently have Windows XP on my laptop and Windows (I like to crash) Vista.

I am glad you have I2Workout. If you click on the file menu button you will see the menu choice of "Create MP3 File" and "Create Wav File"

Click on one of these and you will be asked for the choice of the background MP3 or WAV file to be added to your workout chirp file.

I2Workout will blend the two together.

Then you can burn the finished file to a CD as an MP3 or a WAV.

As to Audio editing software. Try searching for freeware audio editing or merging software. I found a few on Google.

Happy New Year

In case anyone wants the full i2Workout program, here are the links:

Original program posted here, 30-day trial:
----------------------------------------
http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=20947&d=1180666412

The attached file at the end of this post removes the 30-day trial limitations.

Instructions:
-----------
1. Install i2Workout from the original program post, 30-day trial.

2. Replace the installed program file from step #1 (i2Workout.exe) with the file of the same name in the zip file attached at the end of this post. The file's location on your hard drive should be C:\Program Files\i2Workout\i2Workout.exe

3. You now have a full working program with no limitations.

*** Please note that this works only with the chirp technology machines. It does not work with machines that use SD card technology. i.e. if your treadmill, bike, elliptical has an SD card slot, i2Workout will not work with it.

I have an older Ifit Proform treadmill. I have created an ifit workout and saved it in MP3 and Wav format. I connected my laptop to the treadmill and the treadmill doesnt respond. I also burned a CD and connected a portable CD player to the treadmill and it didnt work either.
When I play the program on my computer thru windows media player it seems fine, chirps and talks my program. Any suggestions? Please help!

Try turning the volume of your CD player or laptop up to a high level.

I'm glad I found this forum, specifically this thread. I downloaded the I2workout program and installed it, and updated it to the no nags version. It works perfectly on my Proform treadmill, and it's so much better than using one of the "premade" programs from the Ifit.com website, none of which were exactly what I needed. This program lets you make as many intervals as you want, each one specific for time, speed, and incline. You can predetermine the number of calories you will burn during the exercise, and if you want to modify the program as you go along, its easy to insert and remove parts of the work out. Just like the online version, it displays a graph with your progress right on your monitor (I used velcro to attach a flat panel monitor right to the treadmill).

Many thanks to the author. This program is precisely what I need to keep me motivated and working out regularly. I would gladly support the program with a donation if I had a way of contacting the author.

It's possible that you have a bad connection where the audio cable plugs into the treadmill. In my case the jack became very loose...I called the company, the part is not "user replacable", in fact it's probably not even available, even if they sent a tech out to my house.

I was able to get a good connection by pushing the audio plug firmly into the jack and then using a bit of crazy glue around the plug to hold it firmly in place. So far, so good.

Other things to try: make sure your sound card is working properly (check device manager if running windows), make sure you have the audio cable in the right jack on your computer (not mic or line in), and use a good quality audio cable.

I ran across this while seaching for a way to create my own customized intervals for my treadmill. The ones that IFit sale are kinda limited IMO. I've actually created a couple of workouts, so I know that this works. I have a Nordic Track C2155 Treadmill. It is supposed to work for Bikes and Ellipticals also. Note that this will only work on certain brands of SD cards, I was only able to get the Kodak brand to work on my Nordic Track treadmill.

Here is the link to the actual files you'll need:

Here is the discussion thread pertaining to this:

Hopefully someone will find this useful.
