My biggest vice before starting my program 2 1/2 weeks ago was that I drank a lot of beer (3-4 per day). I decided that in order to cut some calories, cutting out beer would be a great area to start. I didn't want to cut it out completely, so I am allowing myself one per week -- my Sunday treat.

The first few days were kind of tough, but my resolve was very strong and I made it through without much problem. Now I don't really crave it. This past Sunday, I had a beer, and I almost couldn't finish it! I guess my body isn't used to the alcohol as much as it was, and I even woke up with a tiny headache -- kind of like a hangover, but only barely enough to annoy me. I will probably still allow myself one per week, just because I enjoy it, but I no longer really crave it.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

I say gateway drug because when I drink beer,
1)I get drunk and my willpower fails, so I eat more junkfood usually when I drink.
2)Along with the willpower, for some reason (heaven knows why) I associate beer with pizza, nachos, potato skins, potato chips, hot wings, and beer nuts. They almost all come after a couple beers when I'm out drinking.

Those reasons, along with the sneaky amount of calories in beer, makes it the #1 enemy. I've had two beers in the past two weeks, and it was for a flimsy excuse at that. I've still got a ways to go...

btw, I've gone from 105.5 to 103.5 kg in two weeks...a good start, too bad I can't see the results behind my gut...

You're quite lucky. Under some criteria, drinking that much beer a day labels you an alcoholic. I used get hammered twice a week. You know how people say you don't need to drink to have a good time? Well, I I just have a better time when I'm buzzing.

I was at 10% bodyfat and getting totally hammered once a week. I ran like a dog every day to stay lean. When winter hit I stoppped running outside and shot up to 20% bodyfat. I

t's HARD. I dropped about 5 pounds of fat by eating clean for a week and a half and then I went to a friend's a house and lost it and got wasted. Same f'n right it's a gateway drug (atleast when it comes to dieting!)

Beer is one of my biggest enemies. When I drink I eat poorly, smoke, don't work out etc., so I try to stay away.

My big problem is, being in PR, I always have some sort of function to attend. Whether it be a client lunch, happy hour, social events and everyone is always drinking! Not to mention the amazingly fattening food at most of these get-togethers!

I get drunk about once a month. Other than that one day I don't drink at all. The bad thing is that I end up smoking when I drink usually. The good thing is that I don't eat any additional food after drinking like most people do, and typically eat less the next day than I normally would due to the lack of desire to move.

It evens out for me usually. :p

The once a month thing is so much better than what used to be three or four times a week AT LEAST about 1.5 yrs ago.

another solider in the fight again beer, ok that sounds so evil. i have switched to vodka and wine for my kicks, i don't drink as often, but when i did drink beer it was always darks like fat tire amber(here come the spare tire jokes! ;) ), ziegen bock, shiner, etc, mostly imported darks which ironically are higher in calories.

i rather drink water than light beer! :p :D

Premium beers are definitely the way to go... I can't stand the mass-produced stuff, and don't even think about light beer. Unfortunately, they tend to hold more Calories due to the higher alcohol content and some have un-fermented malts.

My main problem was that going out with friends for a couple in the evening, or popping in a DVD at home and sitting down with a beer or two. I guess I was just bored or needed something to drink with the movie.

Now I use water. I won't lie and say that I totally enjoy it and that it's a great substitute for the beer, but I don't mind it-- especially when I remind myself that I really want to get rid of this gut for summer.

All this really is is a test of willpower. Piece of cake (or should I say meat).

Grey Goose (vodka), water, and lemon.

I'm a musician, believe me - it's hard not to drink. Good thing is that it's easy calories. I usually drink when I play, so I'm getting a good cardio workout at the same time.

Now if I could just quit sniffing glue....

I'd thought any good Irish lad would be drinking Murphy's. If I'm going for an import, I'll get Young's Double Chocolate or Old Nick.

Eh, save time and have a Jameson.

Lmao, Sandyrow Champagne, I've never even heard of that one before.
I only drink Harp in pubs, it's disgusting from tins, tastes like rust. But Stella is brilliant either way, smells a bit from bottles though.

If it's got Alcohol, I'm happy.

I've just started my diet / exercise program 10 days ago, and in a few weeks will get back to having 1 beer / week. I will probably just drink homebrew, as I have to get rid of it somehow! I will have to cut back on the amount I brew now. Also it may be a challenge for me to get the best nutritional information (carbs/calories) for my beer due to being homebrewed, but I will try to find a commercial equivalent I guess for the style.

Anyone else homebrew in this situation??

Looks like you picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

What instrument do you play? I play guitar but I've always been envious of drummers because they're getting a good workout unless they're playing the Beatles or Burt Bacharat.

I used to drink alot of Molson Ice but since I started being healthy I gave that up. I'll drink wine with dinner because it really does go well with a nice cut of meat or fish. But most times I don't drink more than a glass or two.

After I cut out the beer I tried vodka or Jack and coke but those just lead to trouble. Its not eating crap just acting like a complete drunken idiot.

I may have some beer during the superbowl but after that I can cut beer out no problem.

I homebrew, too... Unfortunately for me I just finished carbonating a good Scottish Strong Ale before I went on the program. It has a nice high alcohol content (9%), and a lot of residual malt, so lots of sugars. I'm limiting myself to one beer per week, on Sunday night.

For some nutritional info on a few major brands, check this link:

http://www.realbeer.com/edu/health/calories.php

I know there's a way to calculate homebrew, but I can't find the info right now.

I have not had a drink for 6 days!!!! I am gonna break it tomorrow - which is what I always planned to do, with 2 pints down the pub at lunchtime with a plate of chips and burger. I plan on doing this every friday and then being really healthy at all other times.

Someone mentioned beer nuts... I have a big bowl of salted peanuts at least three times a week and it has not made a bit of difference to my weight loss plan (however, I drank shed loads each night too, and that made no difference either - the only thing I cut back was food). They don't contain that much salt believe it or not, and contain a really good source of protein along with some essential vitamins and minerals. The fat is totally cholesterol free too and does not promote any bacterial growth in the mouth like most other foods.

has anyone tried any of the low carb beers?

Personally I never drank till I got married, then acquired a taste for beer (only the pale ale varieties) and wine thanks to my husband. I don't like being drunk (for me all drunk consists of is impaired motor function and a horrendous headache), so I quit drinking again with the exception of a glass of wine on special occasions and an occasional nonalcoholic beer when playing computer games. My personal favorite is Buckler- tastes like beer but with no side effects!

Not drinking is so tough! during the week i have a perfect diet, then comes friday and a bunch of friends with beer and stingers. Peer pressure is tough and god do i love to go out! Lately (last 4 months) i have been going out hard twice a week, frid and sat, but the last couples weeks i have cut it to only once a week. I'll try to keep it at that for a while and may be even cut to once every two weeks if i find the strengh. That would for sure help my progress a whole lot....

Hi andi,

I've tried Michelob Ultra before, it's a v low carb beer on sate in the UK. It's not a favourite I have to say on two fronts;

1 Dinky little bottles that are quite pricey
2 The taste is pretty flat.

It's especially disappointing as other Michelob beers (Golden for instance) are excellent.

Andrew.

wine is one of the few types of alcohol that, in moderation, helps increase your HDL(good) cholesterol levels.
