View Full Version : Hand position on pressing movements

I have been thinking about the best position for the hand to avoid any wrist injuries, especially on the bench press and the military press. I am switchin to heavy weights after eight weeks of high volume. I had injured my wrist back in February and it sucked, don't want that to happen again.

In the past, I always pressed so that the palm is almost parallel to the ground. It seems that there is awful lot of pressure on the wrist when it's bending. How about positioning the wrist so its perpendicular to the ground? It did seem a little awkward when I tried it.

Any benefits to this type of position? Input please! :D

The wrist should be as close to neutral / straight as possible. This doesn't mean the hand itself will be straight up. It will lean backward a bit, but be no where near perpendicular to the forearm.

I'll second that... it is best to try and put most of the load of the weight onto the bottom of your palm where the bones from your arm come to end as to load as little weight on the bending of your wrists as possible.
