In light of my 48th B-day today (Happy B-day John, ha) I picked 5 of my favorite all-time exercises and did 48 reps for each. Many of them were done in rest/pause style, and some (chins) where I was strapped to the pullup bar became 1 inch in the range of motion. LOL
The clean and presses were extremely painful, and even though I used an extremely low weight, by rep 24 I started cursing myself for doing them. The clean and presses took at least 20 minutes to complete all 48 reps
In 1999 I competed in the last sanctioned bodybuilding contest the AAU had before folding under due to financial setbacks. The AAU drug tested EVERYONE who competed (not randomly as the natural orgs do today). And if you won a trophy or an award, you had to wait until the drug test results from San Diego before you could get your trophy. This usually took a week, and when you were notified, you had to drive or travel back to pick up your hardware  The year previous I turned 40 and decided to compete in the Master's class. I went up against 7 guys who were big, ripped, and had what's called "muscle maturity". In the end I somehow became lucky enough to win the overall Master's title but because I decided against competing in the Open class (this was my 10th show of the year so I was tired  ) I couldn't compete in the overall posedown. The guy who won the light heavy class took the overall show. I spoke to him that day and discovered that all he did was basically 6-7 exercises - squats, deads, benches, dips, pullups, and shoulder presses. No pec deck, dumbell curls, fly's, leg extensions, etc., yet his physique was complete with shredded mass and perfect symmetry. These exercises are my favorites and is basically what I did today:
SQUATS: 1x225x25 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 (48) Rest/pause - racked the bar, took 5 deep breaths, then conitinued in this manner untill 48
CHINUPS: 1x48 (I got 18, then just hung on the bar until I got 48  )
DIPS: 1x24 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 (48)
CLEAN AND PRESS: 1x95x48 (this set took 20-25 minutes)
DEADLIFTS: 1x225x21 + 5 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 (48) I used an under/over grip with abundant chalk
I began at 4:30AM and finished at 6:15AM
After this special birthday workout I'll probably take the next 4-6 weeks off to recover.....Gettin old really takes a toll on a fella
