View Full Version : ETS/ZMA and multivitamin - too much zinc?

For those of you who take either ETS or ZMA are you at all concerned about zinc intake. I know ETS gives you 30mg a day, then if you add in a multi vitamin most have 15mg. That is of course before you have eaten anything. I know the USDA recommends 15mg a day but it is probably safe to take a bit more but I know that you can in fact have too much zinc. Anyone have any idea how much that would be? I've seen between 40-100mg listed as the upper limit myself. Does anyone who takes ETS have a different solution, ie take a multi without zinc (and I guess without magnesium as well).

I love the effect ETS has had and would hate to stop taking it but I am a bit worried.

I think the biggest problem is you might throw out copper. Oh, and the anemia thing.

I'm not so sure zinc needs to be supplemented if you're eating healthy.

If it helps any, a couple articles I've read have stated consuming zinc and calcium at the same time dulls down the absorbability of zinc. Something to do with the absorbers that absorb calcium also absorb zinc. I'll look for the articles.

Zinc is a VERY good micronutrient to supplement with if you are a resistance trained athlete.

If you are concerned about it then I would suggest you skip the multi and just stick with ETS. ETS will do much more for your training than any multi.

I'm well aware of Google, thanks. I've read quite a bit about my question however I also value the opinions of who post on this message board which is why I asked

This is what I have been doing and I agree with that. ETS is a wonderful product and I've expierenced the great results seemingly everyone who takes it has.

I think the comprimise I may make is to just take my multi once every few days.

Thanks for the compliments on ETS!

okaaaaay, then, in my opinion, do what you've been doing for a couple of months and then have a blood test done. Explain how much zinc you've been taking in and ask for a mineral analysis to see if everything is fine. Straightforward and will give you a true picture of what's going on rather than guessing. Since you stated that excess zinc is a concern. Most BB boards will recommend no more than 40 - 50 mg total for zinc supplementation for fear of throwing out copper. *after that you need to start supplementing copper). One big benefit of zinc supplementation is it promotes test production and IGF-1.

Thats a great idea, thanks. Probably useful for a lot of things other than zinc levels too.
