Hi everyone, I am new to using forums. This will be the first forum I have ever joined so bear with me. This site has helped me tremendously as I have begun the process of changing my body.

Anyways, I was wondering if protein powder digest differently because you are drinking it compared to eating lean protein sources?

I have recently been reading up on properly combining your foods, and multiple sources state that you should not combine carbohydrates with protein sources such as bread and meat because different enzymes are used for each type of food. However, since I have been lifting every day and eating six meals a day, I really need to have protein each meal. So is there a difference if I drink a protein powder drink and eat a cup of oatmeal, compared to a cup of oatmeal and eating a chicken breast?

Thanks for the help.

Most powders probably digest quicker than meat due to consistency if nothing else. Also, meats bring a lot of good nutrients that aren't in a powder (CLA, creatine, etc). However, protein powders are convienent and are ideal for when you need it to digest faster anyway (around workouts). Powders are also easy to mix in other things you need with.

Are you sure these weren't warnings against combining carbs and fats? I've never heard of not combining carbs and protein. I think if there's anything every bb agrees with, it's: eat protein, all day long. ;)

Yeah you should avoid high fat and carb meals. Fat/protein and carb/protein is fine.

First i seen that - if your interested in body composition goals most follow what i posted above.

If your worried about an acidic diet eat veggies with every meal.

OK, you can't eat proteins with carbs according to that. Also, you can't eat proteins with fats.

So...you eat protein by itself?

I'm not buying into that. I've read too much stuff the other way (P+F or P+C, or even the Zone approach with mixed 40/40/20 but low GI carbs).

Yeah, I've been getting different information from everybody, but I recently took a nutrition class at a local college and again the professor brought up the idea of combining the right types of foods for proper digestion.

The reason why I am so curious about this is because there are times when I have high protein meals that digest quickly and I will be hungry, but there are also times when I will eat a high protein meal and I notice that after 3-4 hours, I might burp and I can tell that the meat has not been completely digested. So that is why I was wondering whether or not the mixing of different foods could be a cause of this.

If it were true that eating carbs & protein together impared digestion, then you'd absorb fewer calories and lose weight. This is not observed.

Also - WTF ... they list almonds and other nuts as "protein" foods? That's odd, because all the almonds I've ever come across have been basically fat + carb foods, with a little protein as a bonus.

They also seem not to realise that most legumes have a significant amount of protein.
