Hey guys,

Im currently at David Lloyd (UK) and well in need of a new gym, if anyone in the UK knows of a good gym in the Surrey area id appreciate it:)

I used to train at a local gym that was really quaint (in a good way) but eventually became inundated with chatters and "bench-only" folks. I always had a bit of equipment in my basement, and I've since developed a rather respectable home gym if I do say so myself (even though it's a bit messy...old equipment still lingers and I still need a dumbbell rack).

After a 2 week free pass to the Hilton in Sheffield at Living Well, myself and a couple of friends have decided to join.

Very good facilities and not too busy and the spa and steam room are just ace after a hard workout.

Very friendly atmosphere and probably the best gym ive been too.

Oh and no I dont work for them!!!!! :bb:

lol Sral, Golds still one of the best? I know back in 1975 it was the home of the elite bodybuilders etc

but now its a chain i think? i just wondered...is itr more of a fitness club than a hardcore gym?

In my experience, yes. I've worked out at the local golds a few times. Lots of machines and cario equipment, not a lot of people using the power racks (other than for doing barbell curls...)

Not that it's a bad fitness center. You can certainly get a good workout, it just draws a much different crowd these days than it used to (well, obviously; fitness wasn't popular at all back in the 70's).

I don't go to a 'gym' per se....I train at a Muay Thai/Boxing gym and have my own weight-training gym set up at home (Body Solid Smith lock machine etc)

24 Hr Fitness...they have a great variety of equipment and they're...well...open 24 hours. For all the single fellas out there, the females are pretty nice too :D

It's a huge chain now, 650+ locations worldwide, and as a member you can use any other location for up to 14 days a year free of charge, so wherever I travel I've usually got a gym there. The local ones have great equipment, all new, super clean, etc. Certainly not the gold's from the "pumping iron" (movie) days.

however I have been in a couple that looked like prison yards, so it does depend on location.

but the local one is among the nicest gyms I've ever set foot in chrome plates on all the machines, rubber coated plates w/ handles, great cool air conditioning, etc. Nice touches.

Hey Famous,
I live in Crofton, MD, and work at BWI. I work out at the Golds in Crofton. They have only been open for about a year. They just recently added a vardio room with a projection TV. They play DVDs. Normally good pumping movies to keep you motivated.
As far as the chatters, there are always a few of them at every gym. Some people see the gym as their social outreach from work. I just moved here from Florida, and I am a little intimidated by the weights. I really shouldn't be. I have been weight lifting for over 15 years. I am not a small person.

I goto World Gym in Quincy Mass (south of boston). Its a pretty big place and it opens at 5:30 am. I like to get there early because there's not many people, plus the later in the day the greater the chances I won't go.

I go to 24hour as well, and I'll agree that it has a nice view :tucool:

Plenty of equipment, both cardio and weights. It's not too expensive with my company discount, and the fact that I'm paying for it keeps me motivated to going every day. I also must mention that I'm comfortable working out there, and everyone seems pretty serious about exercising as opposed to just hanging out and talking.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. You must love the weather... ;)

And yeah, I agree that all gyms have their share of chatterboxes, but Gold's just seems to facilitate that sort of behavior with it's set up. All sorts of nice tv's and a nice sound system, a steam room, more prominance for the cardio machines than the weights (at the Gold's in Westminster, anyway), lots of "pretty" machines...it's got a child care center for goodness sake. The way I see it, Gold's is about one step away from being Bally's.

Give me a dungeon. You know the type; dimly lit, no machines, one bench that everyone has to fight over, and no one uses the squat rack for barbell curls. Now that's a gym!

No wait...that is my gym (at home).

I go to LA Fitness. It's relatively new and nice, and while they got every machine every pansy and woman (lets face its mostly women using them) could ever want, they have everything you need in the free weight area. I use only free weights when I workout and I have no problems doing any exercises because they have everything needed, including babes. Plus my dad pays for it.

I've tried a bunch of different local gyms in my area, but i've ended up at Dolphin Fitness because it's a ten minute walk from my house and it's fairly quiet, which means no waiting in line for the squat rack! :D

I was at World Gym (bought out by Gold's) for over a year. Great selection of equipment, TONS (literally) of free weights, very crowded cardio workout rooms. I recently switched to the YMCA with a family membership so that my kids can swim and my wife can join me in the workout room. It's a brand new facility with the latest equipment/machines, nice clean locker rooms so I'm happy.

I also go to LivingWell (http://www.livingwell.com) in the Hilton Sheffield and I must say it is quite nice. It's a little on the expensive side, but if you are serious then it's worth the extra cash. Before that I was attending a local council run gym, and although it had everything I needed it was way over subscribed and the equipment was aging. The cliental was a little, shall we say, unrefined.

LivingWell (http://www.livingwell.com) rocks as long as you can take a serious hit in the wallet

When I lived in London I used to go to Holme's Place in Archway.
It was alright, but I guess it's a bit basic. I don't think it would suit my needs those days, after I started working out more seriously.

I, too, used to work out at 24 Hour Fitness. It is in an old converted 12 screen movie theater. It is really nice. A ton of free weight equipment, and then all the machines your heart could desire. It also had a swimming pool, 2 basketball courts, saunas, hot tubs, etc. Tons of cardio equipment, too. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I moved farther away and couldn't stand a 20 min drive each way. Too much wasted time.

So, now I work out at home. I have a Tracker 550 Half-Rack w/ hi-lo cable system, FID bench w/ preacher curl, leg extension/curl attachments. I have a 300 lb olympic weight set, 185 lbs additional weight, olympic curl bar, olympic DB handles, a bunch of cable system attachments, a swiss ball, a homemade pullup bar, a treadmill, and soon a homemade dip station.

The setup has everything, and it only cost about 1 year worth of 24 hour fitness membership for my wife and I. It will last for years and years, too. I'd recommend this over anything else. The drivetime is worth it!

I use the univeristy's gym. It has everything I need and is not crowded at 6am. The hours can get crappy during breaks and such but other than that it is great and free.

Best I've used was World Gym, but I scrapped the membership last year and bought a bunch of gear for my garage.

I go to ETSU(East Tennessee State U) and use their gym. It is huge and no one ever uses the free weights but about 9 people(me included). But if you want to get on the cardio machines, you better just stand in line. Pretty nice though. Brand new(under 2 years and clean). When I'm home though(I live about 45 minutes from ETSU and commute), I use Great Body Co. I get in there for free since my mom is friends with the owner. So it works out great for me all around.

I work out at the South Osaka Training Centre. It's one of the very few gyms around here that has a respectable set of free-weights, and just about everyone is serious about their training. It's probably the best gym I've been to. If only the music...but that's another topic.

I belong to a local YMCA. Its pretty cheap at $40 a month for family. Often have trouble a the one branch with overcrowding, although it is very clean and spacious. The other local branch has plenty of room, but the equipment is old, and you definitely get that dungeon feel. Guess its a tossup.
