View Full Version : Sharing the results of my pms calcium "experiment".
FerretNose Thu, August 24th, 2006, 07:55 PM I've always had horrible food cravings at that time of the month, many of you know what i mean- that's when i'm very likely to blow my good eating habits with a food rampage and lay around feeling sluggish.
Anyway, I have been reading that taking a calcium supplement appears to improve this and other symptoms. So last month I began taking 600 mg calcium supplement (just a wal-mart one) with Vitamin D every day. I must tell yall, there is a significant reduction in my food cravings, this month. I have easily been able to stay on track with my food intake, and even felt like working out.
I don't know if this is some weird placebo effect, or if the calcium is truly doing its job... but whatever it is, it kicks butt and I feel better.
Just thought i'd share that. I truly believe it's helping me, and my symptoms werent just pms, they were throughout the whole thing.
later! :)

Butterflyer Tue, September 5th, 2006, 11:30 PM Calcium/D/magnesium supplements seemed to help my allergies a little.
I have heard people say that sometimes the food cravings of PMS indicate a need for certain nutrients.
Thanks for the report on your experiment!:tu:

Interesting, eh? I've heard the idea, also, that food cravings are indicative of nutrition deficiencies. I'm not sure how much truth there is in it, but it seems plausible. Last night, for example, I was lacking in Vitamin FNC: (Vitamin Fruit and Nut Chocolate), a little known vitamin that aides in wellbeing and feelings of normality.
I really ought to try it though, thanks for the suggestion!

Um, yeah, I always seem to be low on that. :p
Really, I can trace most of my food cravings to hormone imbalances.

But, I think the calcium supplement could be really helpful.
Especially since mine is a really delicious chewy chocolatey one (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000C6DJX?v=glance).

;) Hormones seems like an easy, obvious answer. The trouble I find, is that I only work out that it's hormones when it's a little too late, so a supplement (particularly a chocolatey one) might go far to alleviate this. All week I was trying to figure out why I was just craving *so* much stuff- mostly junk.
buffedstuff Sun, October 8th, 2006, 07:48 PM I know everyone is different in my case I needed magnesium and more b vitamins. the only weird side effect is every month I crave cauliflower. Hey but its a healthy craving and no more mood swings. I'm loving it.
Butterflyer Sun, October 8th, 2006, 09:12 PM "They" say chocolate cravings are a sign of magnesium deficiency (http://www.truestarhealth.com/members/cm_archives14ML3P1A15.html)-- chocolate has a little magnesium in it. I used to find that magnesium was the toughest thing to get the full RDA of in my diet, but I've gotten pretty good at it now! Partially thanks to the World's Healthiest Foods (http://whfoods.org/) link I got from guava. Oh, and I do eat some dark chocolate just about every day.:D Yum yum.
Cauliflower is a fascinating craving, buffedstuff! I like it but have never craved it. I think that's neat! What a good craving to have...:)

Interesting link! It says something about how diets high in fruit and vegetables provide lots of magnesium and potassium. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, so....? What was interesting was that I was craving salmon, particularly. In fact, I feel like a little now....:eat:

You probably eat more fruits and vegetables than I do! Even when I tried to eat more veg and fruit, I couldn't get enough magnesium according to Fitday. And then I would get more allergic. I think because I eat more peas and peanut butter and beans now, I'm having an easier time of it.
Love that salmon! Check out all the great stuff that has in it... it even has a lot of magnesium and B6.:claplow:
Last week, of course, I had the great pancake craving. Obviously, I was in great need of the happiness vitamin. Pancakes make you happy! I learned *that* years ago on a sign in New York-- I think it was the Royal Canadian Pancake House. Their pancakes make you shriek, though... I saw someone get served a pancake that was easily 2 feet in diameter and could have fed a family of four. I was fortunate that at that time I had ordered the breakfast sampler with silver dollar pancakes. I still couldn't finish the stuff.
guava Mon, October 9th, 2006, 12:52 PM Pancakes are highly correlated with happiness. But you may have made a mistake Butterflyer. The bigger the better, but you have to share. Luckilly, I had not ordered anything for myself on the occasion this breakfast picture was taken. The checkered tablecloth just ups the happiness factor.

Awwww, that's the look of pancake happiness!!! :)
Sharing is excellent...
