We need to be able to interact with other challenge members and leave comments on their efforts and pics. Not sure how to make this happen. I'll be honest. I get my post in late every day but don't take the time to read other's posts. In past challenges that I have participated in, it was nice to get to know them better. I consider them friends now. Obvoiusly, there are a lot more people here but you get my gist.

Thanks for your elocution of something I couldn't figure out how to say. I agree with Carguy.

We need to be able to interact with other challenge members and leave comments on their efforts and pics. Not sure how to make this happen. No differently than any other challenge. Once the challenge starts, feel free to post to the thread all you like and interact with other participants as you normally would. Just quote the journal entry/picture and comment any way you like. Repeat as needed. :)

The new multi-quote feature that will be in the next version of vBulletin will make this even easier.

What a great idea! :tu: But I'm going away for a weekend of planned hedonism. I guess I could start on Tuesday, but then I'd already start with an umpteen point deduction. :( Well, maybe next time...

Question re the posting everyday requirement.

Not in an effort to 'cheat' or anything like that...but if we're out of town and literally unable to post (as I will be this Labour Day weekend for four or five days, although might be able to get to a computer a bit here and there)...is that considered not taking the challenge seriously?

Will the Queen come kick our asses for being lax?

Will the Queen come kick our asses for being lax?You are your own boss, and it's up to each of us to be honest with ourselves and the other participants. My suggestion would be to announce in advance if you will be unable to make updates for a known, upcoming reason. No one is going to come behind you and "call you out". Well, at least I won't. :)

The daily updates are important because if a participant can't take 30 seconds to update his or her journal, then chances are the other things are not getting done either; however, I certainly realize that there are situations where computer access is not available.

Bottom line when it comes to these sorts of issues: use your best judgment and remain true to the spirit of the contest. :tucool:

This is my first challenge so forgive a stupid question. How do you count weekends? I can only train M-F. I eat clean 7 days a week with one cheat meal per week (usually on Sunday) and am very active on the weekends playing with the kids, working in the barn etc. But they're not training days. So there's nothing to update from Sat and Sun. Do I end up treating September as 21 training days? John's example shows a 7 day training week.

Thanks

You could always update what you did with your kids and stuff. Give us a little glimpse into your life. (even if it's just "went to the park") I don't know about others but I enjoy reading little snips of other peoples daily life. Gives me more options on what I can do myself lol.

Been thinking about your suggestion and will take it up. I'll try to include a little bit about my life in my september posts. It may help relieve the tedium of hearing over and over again that I didnt lose any points :tu:
I had been following an old rule of mine of never speaking unless spoken to. This has not been a good rule at all. So I know no one at my gym or in this town other than my family. Maybe the september challenge will bring me out a little.

Also I figured the math wrong in the original question. It's not 100 points for every perfect day, but 100 on 9/1 and counting down from there for deducts. Of course, I don't need to worry about those!

Does anyone use the hybrid or threaded mode of viewing the forum ? It seems to show the hierachy of posts for the thread ie who replyed to which post. Perhaps that would be a good way to comment on peoples posts as it allows you to see who has replied to your post directly not just in linear fashion of who posted in the thread. I suspect that many people might just trample on it not knowing about the functionality.

Hybrid mode is pretty good for viewing replies directed to certain people in the challenge threads. :tu: Good tip - I'm sure many folks don't use/know about it!

(I don't use it, but it is a great suggestion!)

I'd like to jump in on November assuming you do the 100 thing again.

Is there a WAP or mobile version of the forums? It would really help for quick updates if I could do it from my PDA/phone unit.....

The 100 Challenges will be held every month for the foreseeable future. Registration for the November challenge (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=31811) is currently underway.

I know this was a while ago, but I had a thought that I've decided to share. Have you considered using a sub forum for each month so that a person has their own thread for each month. I don't know if I explained it well so I'll give an example of what it looks like in my head:

Fitness Challenges:
........100 Challenges
...............February 2007
....................Ted
....................Steve
....................Bill
...............January 2007
....................Ted
....................Steve
....................Bill

I still don't know if it makes sense, but it's an idea.

Most people have indicated to me that they like the current format. Several dozen threads would make keeping up with other people's progress far more time-consuming.

not tryin to give you more work.. but how about deleting the posts started by the users who say they are going to start and dont do a thing? i counted 11 in the Feb challenge. And/or if you fall off the wagon and fall behind 1 week of updates you get deleted? It will keep ppl on their toes and make reading easier.

Nah, if someone joins and quits then his or her post is going to remain. Accountability is the name of the game. Besides, I and the other mods have enough to do without babysitting all the people who quit.

John,
Do you think we should deduct a point if we miss a scheduled cheat meal?

Miss a meal, deduct a point.

If you chose to eat a healthy meal instead of scheduled cheat meal, then no--no deduction.

major problem.

i thought i was eating only 5-6 meals a day when in actuality its more like 7 or 8 .. the problem is that about 4 of the meals are much smaller. i have to eat every 2 - 3 hours because my stomach grumbles and craves and will almost cramp up on me if i don't keep feeding.

it's the second day and i need to up my scheduled meals by approximately 2.

am i fucked for this month's challenge ? can i adjust it , or do i need to deduct points for each additional snack/meal

I don't see an issue with wanting to change your parameters midway through, as long as you are not taking advantage of this idea to cheat :p I have changed my own parameters/rules a few times, e.g. when I started SGX 10 days or so into February.

I'm a video game addict, which takes up way too much of my time, and forces me to stay up way too late playing games. So I want to deduct a point for

1. Staying up past 1am playing games
2. Playing more than twice a week.

I'm assuming that cool, right? Unless deducting points for random things will screw things up somehow, but I don't see the harm.

You are free to deduct a point if you forget to brush your teeth if you want.

Perhaps a stupid question, but ... I'm thinking of participating, but I'm going to be out of town a lot over the next two months, including a 9-day field trip where I'll be hiking around Hawaii and have no access to the internet, ability to eat at my scheduled times, or weight train.

Is it feasible to say in my entry ahead of time that when I'm out of town on these things I'm not going to deduct points? I mean, otherwise, for that 9-day period alone I'll be down at least 5 points a day.

Or should I just wait and join the December challenge, after my travel months are over?

It's up to you. Keep in mind that the goal of these challenges is consistency as measured by a set of guidelines that apply to all participants. If you participate you need to deduct points as specified by the guidelines.

What if I participate and post effectively a dual score, the main one being deducting for those days along with everyone else, and a second one accounting for those days when I really don't have access to what I need in order to do the challenge?

Hi, my first challenge coming up in October. I read this whole thread and didn't see the answer to what I'm curious. Am I right to assume that the measurements for body parts are when the muscles are flexed? Or is that up to me?

Most people measure cold (unpumped) but flexed, but that's entirely up to you. Whatever you choose to do, do it consistently.

It seems not as many people are completing their challenges as a year ago. I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad but I regret not continuing them. I'm terrible at keeping information down, I'm really unorganized, and the challenge helps me keep the info in one place. If done correctly, it is an invaluable research tool. You can look back and see your stats and compare what it was you did then and what your doing now. No paperwork no mess. I'm missing some stats that I wish I had since I stopped the challenges. I know others are great at writing stuff down, but I stink at it, so these challenges help me out in other ways besides keeping my focus.
