View Full Version : Back pain, out of nowhere...

I'm so mad. On Monday I came home from work, changed, warmed up like I've done for the past 7 months. Then I started my usual total body workout. I had just finished dumbbell good mornings, continued on to db squats. Half way through the second squat I felt a tear/burn pain in my back (halfway between my spine and my side). I dropped the dbs because I couldn't bend over to put them down. I just can't figure out why this would happen now after having followed my program for months w/o injury. The only thing I can think is that two days earlier I had to lift a patient who had forced himself between the rails, back up into bed. I didn't hurt myself (that I was aware), but maybe I set myself up for a later injury...
Since then I've been resting. Missed two days of work
and I've been self-medicating with my son's RA medicines (Mobic and 5 mg prednisone). Between the rest and the meds, I feel better, but my back is still so tight. Of course, I won't be doing any lifting for at least two weeks, but is there anything else I can do to hurry the healing. Like intake of more protein, water, etc?
Thanks for any ideas.
Pam

After dropp'n names like "Mobic" and "5 mg prednisone", I dont think you're going to get many replies.

Give it a week, see how you feel after that.
If still bad, see a doctor.
Drinking water + daily multivitamin is always a good idea.

Mobic is an anti-inflammatory. The last time this happened, (six years ago), my doctor gave me a cortisone injection, so since I had prednisone here (5 mg. is a small dose), I tried it. I'm not sure what the problem is with mentioning two medications.

Hmmm...reminds me of that adage about the human back...In the right position it can lift a truck but pick up a baby the wrong way and **%!!

I had lower back pain some time back and went to the chiropractor. He suggested ice (for inflammation) and movement (slow at first). I'm not aware of any dietary guidelines. IMHO, if the injury caused you to miss two days of work, I would see a doctor or chiropractor. Good luck and get well.

oh, no - there's nothing wrong with mentioning meds.
I just have a technique on forums, that if i want to get alot of replies to a question, i make it look like i'm an idiot so people are more likely to feel like they can offer me advice.

For example, if a medical doctor came in here asking us what he should do about an illness, no one's going to answer him because he's already so far advanced in knowledge in said area of question.

So if you're mentioning huge goofy words and mentioning you have patients, asking what you should do about a pain, people are going to feel that they're not advanced enough can't help.

Thank you for all your replies. I am feeling better today. A lot of your good advise I found reiterated here (http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/displayarticle.php?aid=5), so I plan on following all of it. It's just so weird that everything was going along so well. I certainly won't take my workouts for granted, I will be more careful.
Again, thanks!
