View Full Version : high or low intensity cardio while bulking??
Dable Sat, July 29th, 2006, 08:07 AM hi guys i am very close to bulking again and i know it sounds crazy but im goin to do cardio 6 days a week but i will eat a hell of alot to make up for it, i was wondering is it better to do a high intensity cardio at bout80-85%mhr of stay with low intesity 65%mhr to help keep the fat off while bulking??
tennisball Sat, July 29th, 2006, 03:04 PM Don't do it. Eat smarter. Time your carbs. Do HIIT or some sports on your off days. Unless you are training for competition, don't do all that cardio if you're serious about putting on size.

HIIT will probably do better for you at burning fat. I don't know what it does to your bulk, but I thnk if you eat enough to cover your activity, lots of cardio is not a problem. Otherwise, nobody could train effectively for a decathlon or heavyweight boxing.
rtestes Sat, July 29th, 2006, 03:37 PM If you do a slow bulk, don't worry about burning calories that can go to muscle. Worry about your weight program, drinking 1-1.5 gallons of water, rest and sleep. Remember you aren't training for an event, you are trying to build attractive muscle. :bb:
SwoleCat Sat, July 29th, 2006, 04:43 PM I do low intensity while bulking (all the time actually) but especially while bulking to use fat for fuel and to avoid burning off lean mass which is the goal of a bulk in first place. (gaining lean muscle)

Do we know that?

An educated guess, after reading all of his past posts. I am sure when he wakes up and signs on, he can confirm his goals.
1FastGTX Sat, July 29th, 2006, 05:17 PM Neither. Keep fat at bay by eating properly.
If you absolutely insist on doing cardio I recommend 1-2 HIIT sessions per week, non-fasted, fueled similar to your weight workouts.
Dable Sat, July 29th, 2006, 07:07 PM well i am training for a jnr bdybuilding comp next september, but the reason i am asking is because it doesnt make sense to me, you see al the football players and boxers with huge ass bodies but they always do a high intensity cardio for their sport??? hows that work

They are in endurance sports to a degree. They need the wind. Most have a good deal of more fat on them then a bodybuilder. As a 16 year old weighting 160 or so at 5'11", your problem is putting on muscle. Cardio doesn't build muscle, it burns calories. there is no magic that assures that they will be all fat calories. Weights burn calories and builds muscle. :bb:
P4RCX Mon, July 31st, 2006, 08:16 AM I'm under the impression a low intensity workout was better for burning fat. I've recently read a book by Anita Bean and she confirms this a number of times. (Complete guide to sports nutrition)
I'll post a quote up tomorrow if it helps...
HIIT workouts are good for increasing stamina, but you can never be sure if its going to burn fat, or deplete your muscle glocogen stores!

Check this (http://www.acclaimimages.com/_gallery/_SM/0094-0512-1508-0458_SM.jpg) pic out of what cardio plus weights can do to the legs. As I've mentioned in other threads, I can't say with certainty that aggressive training for triathlon has negatively impacted my weights training.
In regards to which (high/low) would minimize the effects, I'm not sure. Probably high would have more of a catabolic effect per period of time, but you're doing it for less time, too, so I couldn't say. :)

If you are training for body building - pay no attention to boxing training. Body building is a pretty unique sport.
Boxing training is extremely tough, and will get you an extremely tough body. It shows that you can do insane amounts of cardio and not burn off lean muscle.
How? Because you have to build tremendous endurance. The short version is that if you work up to the point where you burn fat at high intensity, then you never run out of energy, because even a low body fat percentage has lots of fat. The body adapts over a long time to endurance programs, so they are not quick fixes. But if you want to know how come Muhammad Ali didn't lose all his lean muscle while doing big roadwork and skip rope before the days of steroids? Well, it just works that way. The whole point of endurance is that things that put a big dent in most people's metabolism don't put a big dent in yours.

Agreed. My cardio doesn't change much besides the amount I do it. Cutting 6 or 7 times, bulking 3 or 4 times. All in the AM, fasted.
