View Full Version : Abdominal girth
Black-Dawn Fri, July 28th, 2006, 02:59 PM A simple question for males here who started with a large Abdominal girth.
Did the inches come off your tummy faster the leaner you got?
For example : did you lose 10 inches the first 30lbs and another 15 inches for the next 30lbs? or was it the other way around?
Thanks.
Shahar.
soltrain Fri, July 28th, 2006, 04:43 PM Unfortuantely I dont think this is a set guidline. I carry most of the weight in the belly. I do lose centimeters, inches but dont notice because it still looks BIG. However, I do notice in my face, chest, etc because I dont carry as much fat (and people have noticed as well). So I am losing inches but you lose fat everywhere so its spread out and doesnt seem as much as in the belly.
Now I have heard of a concrete number which I will share.
For every 4 pounds of fat you lose an inch.
For every 8 pounds of 'weight' you lose an inch.
Take it for what it's worth but sounds about right to me. I lose about 2 inches for every 8 to 10 pounds in my pants. Right now I am at a somewhat loose 40 (weight is 252) and expect to carry a 34/36 at 210. I'm 6'2 by the weigh. :)
phitness Fri, July 28th, 2006, 05:24 PM I started at a 54" gut and am down to 42" (both measured at widest part around navel with love handles.) I think I've been losing belly inches pretty consistantly from start to my current status and still have about 6 inches to go to be pretty darn lean for my size. 36" tape measure waist will be nice with my large shoulder circumference methinks. :tu:

Interesting. While I don't believe in "magic numbers" or "one size fits all thinking" when it comes to fitness, it's pretty interesting to hear this. This puts me at 24 pounds of fat to lose my gut, kinda in line with my estimated 32 total pounds of fat to lose I guess.
Black-Dawn Fri, July 28th, 2006, 06:10 PM I don't think there is a set number either as everyone is different.
Myself I lost about 8 inches in the last 24lbs of or so of weight lost,
but I've also added lean mass at the same time so it throws things off.
I did not measure my waist when I started but at 230lbs it was 51inches
so I'm guessing at least 54inches at 245lbs. I am 5'10 btw.
I am asking about the girth loss trend because I'm trying to figure out
my "end" weight. online bf% calcs put me at 30%+ but they also claim
I started at close to 50% and that I've lost/not gained LBM (My arms/calfs are growing not shrinking) so I don't put much stock into those.
My tanita seems to be more consistent over the long term and it puts me at around 24% which means I should drop another 10inches or so
in the next 30lbs. Oh well I guess We shall wait and see. :)

cburfield Fri, July 28th, 2006, 11:26 PM Despite everyone's recommendations to measure and track, I really didn't do that very effectively, so I can't give you a definitive answer for me. However, what I found with the waist size in my pants is that I dropped sizes very quickly initially, then more slowly as time went on. However, I also seemed to drop weight initially more quickly than I am now - maybe 2.5 lbs per week vs. now I'm at about 1.5 lbs per week. I went from tight 42" pants (argh...) to 38" in about 4 months; over the last 6 or 7 I'm now finding my 36 waist slacks to be loose.
FWIW, I'm 6' and started at 262, and have dropped to 197 so far.
Black-Dawn Sun, July 30th, 2006, 02:43 PM If you consider your abdominal area as a cylinder it should
lose circufance faster for the same amount of volume lost
the smaller the cylinder gets.
Of course one's abdominal area is not a cylinder and the human
body does not often follow logic. :)

Hort Sun, July 30th, 2006, 05:12 PM No. Slower, actually.
Because you're generally losing the same PERCENTAGE of fat, not VOLUME of fat... so as total fat mass gets low, the perceived visual loss, at least for me gets harder and harder to see.
Keep in mind that your body also gets stingier the leaner you get. So that last few pounds can be very hard.
And if you are carb sensitive, well, let's just say that a little water retention can be very frustrating. :bang:
rtestes Sun, July 30th, 2006, 06:19 PM It will leave about like it went on. It went on based on your genetics, they will determine how they leave in what order. The timing is dependent on diet and exercise.
When we complain about how much effort and time it takes to take it off, remember this when or if you ever let it come back. No one forced us to overeat and under-exercise. We choose to. :tucool:
Black-Dawn Sun, July 30th, 2006, 06:22 PM If I'm understanding you correctly, you are saying that
because as you get leaner you normally lose a smaller total amount of fat per week/month/whatever you will lose inches of your belly slower as well?
If that was what you meant it is most likely true, but that was not the question. The question was not about timespan but about the same amount of fat lost vs the girth loss in different stages of a large fatloss journy.
For example : did you lose 10 inches the first 30lbs and another 15 inches for the next 30lbs? or was it the other way around?
for someone who needs to lose 3 inches it would not matter
for someone like me who has another 10-11inches to lose
It can make more of a difference.

When you get very lean, issues such as loose skin, skin mass in general, water weight, etc all play in the figures more than they do when you've got a "big gut".
