View Full Version : Does a chest (pecs) look larger or smaller when at a low body fat?

I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not my chest is lagging. It's my guess I'm sitting at around 12% bodyfat, but my chest isn't as defined as my shoulders, arms, and basically my entire upper body. It's also possible that I'm carrying a little fat there, but I'm not sure. When people drop a couple of more %'s, do their chests tend to look larger, or does fat make them look smaller (mainly due to less cuts and definition between chest and abs)? The reason I ask is because it sure seems like I'm pushing a good bit of weight in proportion to the rest of my bodyparts. Thanks for any opinions,

I don't know the answer in general, but I think my chest looks bigger as I lose body fat. The actual dimension (measured with tape around torso, but under arms) is getting smaller however. I think what gives the illusion of this are the inner and outer cuts that are getting slowly more pronounced. I've finally got a decent cut between my pecs, and the outside (between pec and arm) is starting to come as well. You can see what I mean to some degree here (http://arker.homelinux.org/~dcraven/trans/hguy/index.php) when you compare my June and July pics for example. Even though the dimension has dropped 1/2" in that timeframe, I think it looks a bit bigger? I know my shots aren't the best example to use, but that comparison is the handiest for me :).

Regardless of the perception of more size, the shape certainly improves in the last stages of a cut in my opinion. In the mirror, the area covered by the pecs might look smaller than when compared with the higher body fat look from straight on (due to "blurred" edges), the shape with lower body fat makes them look more pronounced from other angles.

Cheers,
Heavy

As my abdominal fat decreases, it gives an illusion of a bigger chest. :)

Ok, I'm on my first no-bull cut, and as I've stripped away fat my chest looked smaller for a while(I have really small pecs) but now that my abdomen is losing fat it looks a little bigger again.

Thanks for the responses. I might be lagging a bit, but I'm hoping that dropping a couple of pounds might even things out. My lifts are fairly congruent with each other, and hopefully with a lower body fat, it will show. Thanks again,:D

My chest seems to get smaller as I lose fat. I used to have a huge beer gut, but back then my chest looked huge as well. Now, I've lost quite a bit of weight on my stomach, but unfortunately, my chest looks smaller as well.
