Just curious. Lets say you didn't use, or didn't have access to protein powder as a base for a post workout shake, or premixed drinks for this sort of thing,...What would be a good choice for nutrition directly after your lifting?

My apologies,..I should have been more specific,..I was thinking along the lines of somethingf that would act fast like the protein powder prodcuts. Something short of a meal.

The reason I ask is, I'm on the road from time to time, and try to find a place to work out while I'm out, and figured if there was somthing pretty easy to find on the road, to use in place of a shake, I would keep that in mind. Also, I wanted to try going without the powder for a while, and see how I feel. I seem to have some bloating in my lower abdoman. Could be nothing, but I have read there are a lot of folks, that have troubles like this with powders, or a specific brand. I identified one that doesn't like me very well for sure, and thought I would double check the one I have been using for a while as well,...

The last time I was on the road, I found a gym that sold all sorts of pre, and post drinks and bars and such, but they were WAY overpriced. It's not a huge deal as I wouldn't be buying the stuff at the gym all the time, but I would rather not spend a crazy amount on something I know can be had for much less.

Goals,...Health, and Building Muscle. It's working. I'm just not sure how well, as I don't really have any type of benchmarks to reffer to. Things are changing, but like most of us, I don't think fast enough,,.:D I'm always trying to learn, and looking for ways to progress,...:read:

Thanks again,..>>>--->

I have a ziploc bag of vanilla protein powder with me at work ... much easier than carting around the five pound bucket ...

I add a couple of teaspoons to an 18 oz. chocolate milk in a pinch - or mix it with oatmeal and banana.

As far as the bloating thing goes, try soy maybe? Or, reduce the amount of your serving. Bloating and gas are problems that I have experienced as well - and can be a sign that your body has not quite adjusted to the protein intake. Another item I make use of (we buy them in bulk and tote them around) are Chocolate Graham Zone bars. These are particularly useful when I'm on the road or at a trade show and need a quick food fix. Others may dispute their value nutritionally, but they pack a bit of protein, and some good 'ol sugar - and fill the hole nicely. Better option than a Milky Way bar I figure ...

Thanks guys,..I have been using powders for quite a while. Just figured I would try going without any at all for a while and see if some of the blating webnt away, or maybe it's not really bloating at all. I'm not 'Fat" really, but still want to lose the little bit of lose skin around the belly before a bulk,...It's going, but not fast enough,...:D Go figure,...

I hate the idea of passing on a fast acting protein right after a workout though,..Looking for something to take the place of the powder for a while,...

PWO take 15 gr bcaa's, 5-10 gr glutamine, 4-6 gr L-carnitine or 3 gr Acetyl-l-carnitine. One hour later have your whole food meal.

Not to hijack this thread...but why is chocolate milk used by so many people PWO? I assume it is for the fast-GI carbs...but looking at the label of chocolate milk at the store today the second ingredient was corn syrup...does that suddenly become OK PWO?

I am not criticizing...I am actually curious whether I should switch to that (right now using oats and whey in milk).

corn syrup=sugar, so yes, fast acting carbs. And PWO is the best time to take these in, esp. on a bulk.
