View Full Version : I think I killed my iPod Shuffle...
phillydude Thu, July 6th, 2006, 06:35 PM After a particularly hot and sweaty run tonight, the controls stopped working. I turned it off, and now when I turn it back on, the green light just flashes and it makes audible clicking noises in the headphones... and both symptoms persist for a few moments even after turning the unit off again. From what I've been able to tell on the iPod forums, it might need a few days to dry out, and then it might come back to life.
Or not.
Bluestreak Thu, July 6th, 2006, 07:57 PM Yikes! That stinks. I got a waterproof neoprene case for my iPod from Ebay for like $15. Works great to keep my iPod dry no matter how sweaty I get. And it keeps it from getting scratched, protects it from drops (it's cushioned) too... worthwhile for an expensive toy like my iPod.

As someone pointed out, this is the bottom of the line, $69.00 iPod, which I have gotten a full year's worth (and several hundred miles) of use from... so I shouldn't view it as a traumatic loss... more an inconvenience.

Or an opportunity to get a shiny new one. :)
danboback Thu, July 6th, 2006, 08:17 PM That sucks! I can't find my Ipod Nano, starting to think one of my stepbrothers friends took it, just like my playstation controller and a few other misc items.
Atleast replacing yours can be done fairly cheap....

TheRyanator Thu, July 6th, 2006, 08:20 PM Give it mouth to mouth...then call the police. ;) :tu:
phillydude Thu, July 6th, 2006, 08:24 PM I just requested a service ticket from Apple... evidently there is a chance that they will replace it at no charge since it failed under "normal usage". We'll see...
phillydude Thu, July 6th, 2006, 09:36 PM Received from Apple:
Our initial diagnosis indicates that because your product replacement will likely be covered by the warranty, an AppleCare Protection Plan, or another Apple repair program, there should be no charge to you for the service performed. If any question arises regarding the repair coverage, we will contact you by phone or email.

Your replacement iPod shuffle should arrive shortly.
Banditfist Thu, July 6th, 2006, 10:17 PM I replaced my shuffle 6 times while it was under warranty. I finally got a neoprene cover for it. This last one is on about month 9, but my warranty is over.
Apple was good about replacing them, but ipods are terribly engineered. Battery fatigue is a huge issue. Other companies just have much better products at a third of the price. That's not going to stop me from getting a nano eventually. I hate itunes with a passion.
Masher Fri, July 7th, 2006, 04:19 AM I've had a Creative Jukebox since 2003. Okay, it's not as finely integrated to my computer as an iPod, but it's very workable. It's much better now than it was when I got it.
But come on, 3 years, and it's still going strong. 40GB, £175 shipped from America. Best investment I ever made :) And I don't have enough music to fill it! :D
I thought about getting an iPod, but I've heard really bad things about them. Replacing the thing is one solution, but providing a product which lasts is better.

Ditto this and what Masher said. I just bought the Creative Zen 1 gb player for $70! It fits over 500 songs, which is more than I need at one time, you can create files within the root directory which is sweet because now I have a "Dane Cook" file in case I am in need of a laugh during my workout. It also has an fm tuner, which comes in handy very often. You can even record radio shows on it and it has a voice recorder to record reminders or other various audio. Pretty good product so far, very impressed with Creative. iPod just seems too basic when compared to the Creative products, the only thing iPod might have on them is ease of use with the computer and more storage space.
