View Full Version : Boxing / UFC / MMA
ChrisAndNat Mon, June 26th, 2006, 11:12 AM Hey,
I saw my first UFC the other night, I know its not the old school UFC and all but it seemed cool to a UFC n3wb.
Anyway,
Does anyone here do any boxing / MMA type stuff, I would like to get some info on local clubs or something, sounds fun!!
steven Mon, June 26th, 2006, 10:20 PM im in australia so can't really help you much about your local clubs but i do mma and it really is fun. best bet is to look around at all different clubs and try them all out for a lesson or two, its important to find the right one for you otherwise you wont enjoy it.
tekmoney Mon, June 26th, 2006, 11:46 PM A good friend of mine is a boxer. He tried MMA once at a gym, got smoked by the MMA fighter, but wrecked him when they agreed to keep it off the ground.
He decided to stick with boxing because it's the "sweet science"

Hope you find what you are looking for. Looks like there is tons of stuff in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
FatShredder Tue, June 27th, 2006, 01:26 PM Ok, maybe I'm tuning in way too late whenever there is a boxing mach, but maybe someone can explain something to me.
Does a Regular boxing match consist of two guys lurching around each other at arms length, bouncing up and down, throwing mock punches, and the occasional real one never doing much damage.... and the hugging each other for weight support?
that's all I ever see when i tune into boxing, and I just don't get the thrill of it. You always see real boxing clips back in the old days where they deliver power house lefts, and the guy goes down, but I don't see that in the footage I watch now..

Well,
I am not sure I could start a Fight Club at this point, so I will go for the next best thing.
I have never done any of this stuff, so I wont be too picky

Occasionally you will see a fight where they are holding each other a lot. Usually while inside fighting, or in the later rounds when they are trying to take a break. I don't know what fights you are watching, but there are some good fighters out there. I used to think the same way you do several years ago. Then I got into boxing and realized just how hard it is. It takes years to maximize performance and learn the sweet science. It is HARD. I dont think you have watchedc much boxing it sounds like.
Some good boxers to watch fight are Zab Judah, Floyd Mayweather, James Toney, Antonio barrera, Bernard Hopkins to name just a few..
See if you can get a hold of the Micky Ward vs. Arturo Gatti trilogy - that was some good fighting, and only a few years ago. I tend to stay away from the heavy weights, not a lot of action going on there right now. Most of the good boxing is in the welterweight and middle weight divisions, they tend to move faster and hold a lot less.
And yes, you do take a beating in boxing. Are you sure you aren't watching WWF instead of boxing? LOL
They aren't mock punches, usually the other fighter is good enough to slip, block or duck the punch. And not every punch is a power punch. Some are just used as set up punches. Throwing every single punch as a power punch, you would tire quickly, particularly when these pros are boxing 12 round fights.
The first few rounds in pro boxing are a bit lighter, set up, guage your distance and get a feel for your opponents fighting style. Anyway, you ought to get in the ring sometime, you would be gassing out 30 seconds in. LOL It is hard!
FatShredder Tue, June 27th, 2006, 08:43 PM Not even 30. I'd be down in 10 ;)
OK, thanks for the info. I knew I had to be watching the wrong area of boxing or something :).
