I just bought this MP3 player off Ebay for 50 bucks shipped. A refurbished model. I was looking at the normal Ipods and all that, but I didn't need a bajillion songs, and will end up listening to the radio most of the time anyway.

My point though, where and how can I download songs from the internet? I don't think so, but are they still free?

I have heard of limewire and some other places but, I know nothing about them.

The MP3 includes the software and all that, my computer has a CD burner installed and the new version of Windows Media player and Roxie something or other if that plays any role. Any instruction would be appreciated.

~Thanks.

I have a similar model. The ifp-799.

Depends. You have the choice of paying for music downloads which is legal to have but limited to transfers to computer only with CD, and transfers onto other devices like mp3 players coming at an additional cost. Depends really on the service, and the small print. Another route is to download music legally - some bands offer complete/partial mp3 samples or full owns sometimes - ie http://www.kourtrajme.com/thealamenthe.zip is the oceans tweleve music for the laser scene. http://www.theservant.co.uk/audio/Cells_Instrumental.zip - this is the instrumental music for the sincity trailer ... both were/are free legal downloads of the band's sites.
The other route is to venture into illegal territory - filesharing apps like emule, bitorrent, limewire etc. I won't go into the ethical/moral points, but those are your choices.

Generally you just need the software to transfer mp3s on your computer onto the mp3 player. You can go onto the iriver site, download a UMS update (if there is one) and flash your player. Flashing can be risky so be sure to read the risks before doing it. But the UMS removes the need to use the slow and limiting transfer software and allows explorer to be used instead like any other windows.

*EDIT - another option for music source is any cds you have already. You can rip them off, convert them to mp3 format and then transfer them over.

I have downloaded about 120 songs off Limewire and nothing has happened. Limewire hasn't screwed up my computer at all either.

Alright, well what is 'Flashing' and why can it hurt my equipment?

If I go to limewire, what do I have to do? Just pick songs and download them to the computer or do I have to install something?

Thanks for your help Reanimated838Uk and Pete5.

Any time you can find a channel that the artist themself is advocating you are pretty safe in knowing that either they are OK with you getting in for free or that they are actually getting paid from it. So if you want to download some tune, check to see an artist's site first. The record biz is utterly brutal and aside from a tiny handful on top at the moment, artists need all the breaks they can get.

Well, you have to install something to get limewire to work and once it's installed you can just type in a song or artist. A bunch of the same songs you typed in will come up but you usually want to download the one with the most downloads already which will be at the top. It isn't as complicated as it sounds.

hey omaha there are quite a few ways to get mp3s

limewire is good for popular songs.

mp3 blogs are another way. they are music blogs that usually have a song or two for download. there are tons and tons. best bet is to maybe type the genre of music you want then mp3 blog in google and see what you get. also on most blogs are links to others so you can find one you like and see what other sites they link. i can offer some but i mainly know hiphop/soul/funk but there are all kinds. my favorite is
http://homeofthegroove.blogspot.com/

another way to get music (and other things) is torrents. a torrent file is just a way to download the mp3 or whatever. get a program like azureus and go to torrentspy.com and do a search or browse. there are tons of stuff out there

there are sites like http://epitonic.com/ that has songs in hopes you will like em and buy the album

also you can use google to find mp3s. these are usually songs people have uplaoded to their own sites i dont use this often but here is a link that explains it more
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/128/42/

i would say torrents is the best way to get music and their are other sites besides torrentspy.com although blogs are good to find new stuff you arent familar with

If you want to change or alter a hardware's / components function you'll basically have to give it a new update. The updates can be improvements (fixes bugs, new features, improves stability) but if your happy as it is then you can leave it as it is. Sometimes the latest isn't always the best. You can flash stuff like routers, BIOS chip,

When flashing it is important to allow it to complete fully otherwise you could damage your equipment. So things like making sure your not running low on battery power while doing it. Updating your firmware will delete current songs so be sure to back them up beforehand. Certain firmware cannot downgrade afterwards but you should be able to on the iriver.
