View Full Version : Cold Turkey Challenge
gravityhomer Sat, June 10th, 2006, 06:48 PM Damnit! I'm sick of shooting myself in the foot like this. My achilles heal, what I think kills all of my progress is m&m's and peanutbutter. It is the only snack food I eat but I've been having it once a day lately. Basically you take a butter knife, scoop some peanut butter and and then pick up one m&m at a time and dip it into the peanut butter. Damn it's good, and I'm pissed. I eat this so much. Of course it doesn't help that the last time I was at Costco, I bought 52 oz of m&m's and 6 pounds of peanut butter :bang: :bang:
I have to stop. And I will stop today. no more. This is my challenge. No more m&m's and peanutbutter for 1 month. Today's not even day 1 because I've already eaten it today. :bang: Today is day 0. And for 31 days, no m&m's and peanut butter.
If anyone else has one particular food they can't seem to kick, join me. Give up that food for one month.
Day 0
gravityhomer Mon, June 12th, 2006, 10:07 AM Okay, yesterday was day 1 of no m&m's and peanut butter. This thread totally worked. I was really craving it last night, but then I thought about how I pledged to no one on the internet that I wouldn't do it and I didn't.
Silver Mon, June 12th, 2006, 10:10 AM
good job GH
I was going to try to join your challenge, but I don't have a real achilles heel lately - but know I'm watching and supporting :D
gravityhomer Mon, June 12th, 2006, 11:56 AM thanks. I wonder how much fat I'll lose strictly from this challenge.
gravityhomer Mon, June 12th, 2006, 02:18 PM I mean, I bet I would eat several thousand calores of peanutbutter and m&m's in one week.
1 cup (http://nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c21Pr.html) of m&m's is 1024 calories. Holy Crap!
1 cup (http://nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c218Q.html) of peanut butter is 1517 calories. Oh my lord. I've never really thought about this before.
I would say a good estimate is that I would eat about 3 cups of m&m's and 1.5 cups of peanut butter a week. 5347 calories!!
1.5 pounds of fat/week for my peanut butter and m&m's habit.
And I've been maintaining weight for awhile now, hovering at 180. So by doing dropping this food and replacing it with some low calorie substitute, I'd be cutting a pound a week.
gravityhomer Tue, June 13th, 2006, 11:09 PM Day 2 and now day 3 are done. I feel a little tighter already.
Silver Tue, June 13th, 2006, 11:14 PM that's an amazing amount of calories to cut out
the only problem with this challenge is that it's making me want to try M&Ms and PB!
gravityhomer Tue, June 13th, 2006, 11:19 PM yeah this seems to be a side effect of the thread. And I'm really sorry about that. I came up with this snack when I was like 12. And have been eating it on and off all this time. Lately in the last few years I pretty much cut out every other snack but this one, so it has seen increased action. It really is quite good. If people want to try it, make it a once a week kind of thing, I think sugar, fat, and salt mixed together is just about the worst combination for body fat management.
spongimp Wed, June 14th, 2006, 02:58 AM i'll join you in your painful endeavor. i'm going to give up candy, cookies, cake, and trail mix for a month. right now, it's finals week and i've been really bad... one month to cut my sugar addiction. this is going to be a long month =(
gravityhomer Wed, June 14th, 2006, 08:28 AM goodluck spongimp! be sure to replace those foods with some other low calorie food so you don't get too hungry. instead of eating m&m's and PB at night I've been eating a hard boiled egg.
spongimp Sat, June 17th, 2006, 01:37 AM gravityhomer, thanks for starting this challenge! because i joined, i have seriously resisted so many tempting treats. i don't really get addicted to savory things, so things look good so far! i admit i did have a piece of see's candy today, but i was buying a gift for a friend and the cashier kept waving it in front of my face. at least it seemed that way.
gravityhomer Sat, June 17th, 2006, 02:03 AM No problem. I guess I wrapped up day 6 today. I really like this. I feel like I am no longer a slave to the m&m's and PB. And resisting that treat causes me to choose healthier options more often all the time.
gravityhomer Mon, June 19th, 2006, 04:23 PM I've survived 8 days so far. Viva La no m&m's and PB!!!!!!!!!
phillydude Mon, June 19th, 2006, 04:50 PM What happens if the particular food you can't seem to kick IS cold turkey? With mayo and cranberry sauce on Wonder bread. Yum.
gravityhomer Mon, June 19th, 2006, 06:08 PM huh, never thought of that.
I imagine all life would stop instantaneously and every molecule in your body would explode at the speed of light. Total protonic reversal.
gravityhomer Wed, June 21st, 2006, 02:31 PM 10 days and I actually haven't had any peanut butter at all. Had some m&m's at the movies, but not together.
vatechguy Wed, June 21st, 2006, 04:49 PM Had some m&m's at the movies, but not together.
You ate the M's seperate from one another?
I need to get the friggin peanut butter out of my house.... I don't care for M&M's but a spoon of peanut butter...... ARGH!!!!
Today would be day 1 for me - assuming I can pretend there's a monster in our pantry when I get home and avoid the can.
gravityhomer Wed, June 21st, 2006, 05:17 PM I meant, I ate m&m's but without peanut butter.
I'm such an idiot, that I bought the largest bottle of PB I've ever seen when I was costco. Actually I bought 2 of them. But the stuff never goes bad, i could spackle with it if it comes to that.
Think of something to replace the peanut butter with.
gravityhomer Mon, June 26th, 2006, 06:39 PM 14 days. I am kicking this challenge's ass. Ha ha!
Pete5 Mon, June 26th, 2006, 10:50 PM Ok, I'm in. I won't drink any diet sodas, or sodas for that matter, for a month. Let me add Ice cream treats to that also.
Phillydude try Wonderbread light it has 40 calories a slice and I think only 8 carbs.

Thanks, I will start tomorrow.
Pete5 Tue, June 27th, 2006, 11:04 PM After a day, I'm doing good. I made it through, but I had some cravings for some Snapple.
gravityhomer Tue, June 27th, 2006, 11:44 PM Fight the urge!!!
15 days
Pete5 Wed, June 28th, 2006, 12:02 AM I'm going to add jam to my list also. I can eat that stuff like it's yogurt.
Pete5 Fri, July 7th, 2006, 02:01 AM So far, so good.
gravityhomer Fri, July 7th, 2006, 09:44 AM i'm at 24 days. last night I wanted a treat so I just had a few m&m's, kept the PB in the fridge though. still going.
Pete5 Mon, July 24th, 2006, 02:47 PM 3 more days!
gravityhomer Mon, July 24th, 2006, 04:07 PM wow the end of my challenge came and went and I didn't even realize. I think I ended going about 45 days without my favorite snack, I had some right before I started my current renewed fitness challenge 2 weeks ago. But I certainly kicked the habit, when I had some 2 weeks ago, I didn't even want them. I was just doing it because I was about to embark on a really healthy kick. But I may have went blah on the whole snack now. Huh, it's kind of sad. But better for me.
edit: D'Oh! scratch that. stupid math, I don't know what I was thinking. It seems I only went 27 days. And I fell short. Oh well, but I have a whole new focus, so it's no big whup.
Pete5 Sun, July 30th, 2006, 03:51 PM Done.
