View Full Version : June "Any Time, Any Type" Cardio Challenge!

Well, for those of us that aren't necessarily doing fasted LISS in the mornings specifically, I figured it's time for us to have a challenge of our own.

My challenge to you:

Do your cardio your way for the month of June.

Personally, my goal is to score 29/30 (I might take my birthday off) by doing a combination of fasted LISS, fed HIIT, and golf (definitely fed)...or any other combination that gets me out and doing something to increase my aerobic or anaerobic fitness as well as get some of this fat burned off.

I'm personally hoping that by removing some of the constraints and opening up the definition of cardio a little bit, this will get me motivated enough to go and do SOMETHING, ANYTHING on the days where I just wasn't able to do fasted morning LISS.

If you're in, great, if you're not, that's okay too!

Silver, do you mind if I join as well? You know, just in case there aren't that many people who want to do fasted cardio (and what if I win both!?!?)...But anyway, my birthday is in June as well! When exactly in June is yours?

I was thinking this morning that such a cardio should exist because I am going to mix up some fed HIIT this month with my LISS. Count me in!!

Great challange by the way.

Woke up at 5:00am and ran backwards on the beach for 9 min. as fast as I could. I than ran forward as fast as I could for 9 min. total time 18 min.

At 7:50am I rode my road bike 9 miles to work. I will be riding home later; total 18 miles. I love the outdoors in the summer time. :D

So I just wanna check. This month I have wisom teeth being pulled and so for a couple of days I won't be able to do any kind of cardio. So I plan to double on a few days that I don't do weights.

Can I still count those days twards my total count? Hunh? Hunh? Hunh?

I can doctor's note to excuse me from cardio for a few days, if you want....:D ( )

SO I am off to mine this morning and I'll check out the answer when I get back......

Good going you'all... :tucool:

Justi, the way I see it, we're challenging ourselves more than anything and if that makes you feel like you're accomplishing your goals (in my mind, it's something that would make me feel like I was accomplishing my goals), then I'd count it.

This is the "freedom" cardio challenge - you do what you need to do to make it work for you!*

*I'm not talking cheating, if you don't do cardio, don't count it, but if you think that doubling up works for you, then great. I can see it as counting because time and days are some finite entities, it's a continuum and it's not like our bodies start fresh every day, so I say go for it.

Always count on Who to give the right answer but his own special flare. Basically you do Cardio at about 65-75 % of your max heart rate. You never run/jog, sprint or anything- just a steady pace where you can still have a conversation if warranted.

But you know...I don't really consider it the same.

45 min Fasted LISS... treadmill, 5% incline Max Heart rate 142.

I am finding it harder and harder to get my heart-rate up... It only gets up into the mid 120's after 20 minutes pass.. stays there for another 10-15 minutes and then it starts to climb in the last 10 minutes or so.

Technically at my age for doing fasted cardio, fat-burning it should be at max 75%(226-my age)= 75%(226 - 58) = 126. But I just don't feel nothin' at that level. I think I have been doing cardio sufficiently consistently for a couple of years that my goal is to reach mid 130's. I put the tread mill up to 5% to day because I couldn't reach that and I overshot a bit.. but I think it is OK.

I switch off between the tread mill and the elliptical and it is about the same but I don't even get it up as high on the elliptical.

I think I am going to consider introducing HIIT. I don't like it but I may have to so something. Maybe a couple of days a week on my non-weight-training days.

Anyway, it is 3/3 for me...

Silver
Sat, June 3rd, 2006, 08:46 PM
Justi, increase incline and resistance and those should do it for you, modify as necessary to keep the heart rate where you want it.

Basically, simply crank it up to 10% at the beginning, your HR will shoot right up, and then reduce the incline to keep it at where you want it, as necessary.

Silver, I'll try that... I am assuming that the incline measure on the treadmills represent percentages. I am wondering if that is true. 5% seems like a low number and the incline is a fair bit at an angle. If I were eyeballing it from a degree perspective... I would guess that the angle is at least 10 degrees when the incline counter is on 5... The counter goes up as 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, etc. I just started boosting it to 5 a couple of days ago. I was thinking that was 5% but now I am not so sure... 5% of what ? anyway.

Wh0: wh0areume owns 2500 people. Does that mean you won the race?

Ippo: it is really important that you take care of yourself. I don't think we should count sick days. (I myself am going to have wisdom teeth out at the end of this week.. so I know I will be missing at least one day if not 2 days of cardio.)

Carguy: if you burn anything more... you are so lean... it's gonna be muscle... don't want to to do that...:nope: Not after all your hard work... It is going to be interesting to watch bulk come fall.

Great going guys... M@ & Ecrivain & specialK... :claphigh:

So I did 45 min LISS, heart rate did not get over 132... used building's treadmill as my gym was closed. My building put in home type treadmills instead of professional gym equipment... what a difference... the comfort is not as high, I found it more stressful on my legs... and I couldn't get my heart-rate up....

Either a weak morning or Starclimber #2 is wonky in comparison to the one I usually use (which had no display this morning, for some reason).

In paarrtiiicularly interesting observable phenomena: The alpha-blonde's boyfriend (?) was giving an impromptu personal training session to another girl for at least a half hour. He was so close to her the whole time he could've been a cape.

Could she be single now?

Alright, I'm going down to do my "day 2" (legs, shoulders, tris) workout shortly and I'm going to modify it a bit to ensure that my heart rate stays up over 120 (will probably average out at about 140) for the whole time - shorter rests etc.

This will get the leg workout in as well as something that I think is essentially cardio.

Do you guys that that sounds about right or is that not really equivalent to cardio? (I'm not asking for permission as much as wondering whether that would be cardio-esque --- I know Zenpharoahs would think so)

Sorry I haven't checked in for this week.

Monday June 5th, 45 min LISS -- sorry I don't remember whether it was tradmill or elliptical. If it was elliptical (which it probably was), my HR never got out of 120's -- 5/5

Tuesday, long early day down to DC to see doctors & dentists, timed my food so that when I got back mid afternoon, I could do fasted cardio... planned to go to 1 store to get one item, passed another and said "let me just drop in and look..." and then said "WTF, I haven't been shopping for clothes in almost a year and I am bored with my clothes" -- spent the next 9! hours shopping at my favorite stores--non-stop. Did not sit down once.... nor did I eat... Does that count as fasted cardio?!? I think not:nope: ... my charge cards took a beating too..

So Tuesday was 5/6

Wednesday, made it back for LISS... treadmill pushed up to 5 (which means 28 degree angle -- Thanks M@) 45 minutes, HR up to 142...

SO Wednesday was 6/7.

Thursday... the day of the wisdom tooth extraction... Did not sleep well the night before... could drag myself down to building treadmil for about 20 minutes Fasted LISS, then down to DC for the extraction... In and out fast--nothing wrong with the teeth... just bad dentist in past accidently drilled hole and perforated the floor.. too dangerous to leave. So they yanked out each after about 2 minutes. No work outs for 48 hours

So Thursday 6.5/8

And Friday, no cardio on doctor's orders so 6.5/9 :(

I hope to make some up this weekend. I plan to try spinning for the first time Saturday and maybe 2 cardios on Sunday, AM and PM on elliptical and treadmill. I may give up elliptical.. I just don't seem to have the oomph to get my heart rate up on that one.

So good going everyone...

Ippo: thanks for asking about the extraction... yes it went well, I am exhausted and sore but it is relatively painless compared to others' expereinces.

Ecrivain: hindu squats.... hmmm very impressive...

M@: I think you have a sexy locker.. check out its pheromones...;)

Well after sleeping several hours during the day yesterday and falling asleep around 11:30 last nigt... I woke up at 10:30 AM :spaz: Must have needed the sleep... but missed the spinning class.. so I did regular treadmill. It took everything out of me to do it... motivation was close to zero.

I boosted the incline to 5.5% (angle = 29 degrees); that is more than halfway up the 45 degree angle! and my heart-rate never got over 134 and stayed around 130 most the time. My walking speed was 4.1 mph whihc is about the max I can handle as a walk in general. (I can't jog or run b/c of knee and back issues.)

Anyway...that makes 7.5/10 I think it is too soon after my wisdom teeth surgery for me to try a second cardio today. But I might try a 20 minute one so I can get that .5 up to a 1.0

Funny how much of a difference a few rides can make. First time I did it was something like 33:30 or 35:30 (don't remember offhand) and now it's almost "easy" to do it in 28. When 25 gets easy, I'll rethink the route and add a few kms to it.

So far, it doesn't feel like it. It feels more like a stretch / warm-up. They get my knees ready for walking and kick my heart-rate up. Of course, if I ever get into the realm of doing hundreds of reps, I may feel differently. ;) Try a few and see what you think. I find that it takes me about 10 before I get the right rhythm.

Just checking in:

Does 6 hours of intense housework count as cardio? (Out of town guest.)

Not counting that, I had 5 45-min cardio sessions M-F, 3 on treadmill, 2 on elliptical. I am now doing 4.0 MPH at 5.0 incline on the treadmill. I only get my heart rate up into 140's in the last 10 minutes or so, if I get there at all. I decided to go on the elliptical for a couple of days even though I can never get my HR over 130-131 on that machine, no matter how hard I try... and most the times it sits in the low 120's. And that's at 3.8-4.0 mph at level 6-7. But I can feel I am using different muscles that I haven't in a while. So I just put up with the reduced heart rate.

Today Saturday, I headed over to the gym to do cardio and when I got there I felt like doing weights instead. I hadn't lifted in about 11 days. So I worked out with weights for about an hour & 15 minutes. I did a made-up on the spot total body routine and I alternated exercises (antagonistics) and supersetted sets towards the end. I hit a new PB for me on deads: 80 lbs and a new PB on squats 65 lbs. I did more than I usually do..it just felt great... I was just sort of listening to my body and choosing exercises that seemed to do what it wanted: Deads, Squats, Standing Arnolds, 30 degree incline flies, cable front pull downs, vertical hip raises, cable pushdowns, Lying leg curls, and standing calf raises. I did 3 sets of everything, most with 5 reps, some with 7-8 reps. 60 sec rest period between each set except when I supersetted towards the end (the last few exercises listed.)

I never worked out like that before. It felt great. I think I have to reconsider when I do my weights. I think the end of the day does not work for me.. I miss out on my weight workouts a lot...

So not counting the day of housework or any cardio from today's weights...

I am 14.5 out of 24. Well I probably will not catch up, so I just hope I will get cardio in for the rest of June.

26/26 - 48:00 - Walk outside with Orion - 104 Heartrate

I couldn't get my heartrate up short of running and I couldn't run with Orion on most of the streets we were following (very busy). Lackluster cardio at best.

I'm really itching for a run. I took the walk 'cause I thought it'd be fun for Ri and I had to do cardio at home today 'cause the landlord's coming over at 10:00am. I have to preserve my parking space.

Awesome running weather. 70 degrees and very humid. It's gonna get unbearable in the afternoon.

One of my last cardios before my surgery Monday. I was checking out at T-nation with some other women who surgery in the same area but not quite the same. One of them is a power-lifter. She said it was 10 days before she could do a 3.5 mile walk with hills, 12 days before she went on the elliptical for 20 minutes. She started lifting after 3 weeks against her doctor's advice, but she dropped the qty of weight and increased her reps. By 4 weeks, however, she was benching 100 lbs...:tu:

I was wondering where you were at, M@ (hey a rhymin' mofo).

29/30 - 33m:25s for 14.61 km - average pace of 26.2km/h

I'm pretty proud of everyone this month, especially the 100% club - you guys are dil-a-gent!

I'm proud of myself as well. I don't think I ever did more than 20 days in a month before. Good stuff.

For the record, I don't plan on participating in a similar challenge next month because I'm now training for the mini-triathlon which will mean that I'll probably need some rest days and will not be avidly pursuing a 100% goal.

Good luck to everyone who chooses to participate next month and thanks for joining the challenge this month!
