View Full Version : To rest or not ?
Rhez Sat, May 20th, 2006, 05:44 PM Guys i started weight training on the 4th of February this year, routine is chest, shoulders and tri's on Tuesday's Back and bi's on Thursday, Legs on Saturday.
One thing occured to me today is that since I started i have not missed a session.
So is it benificial to have a rest every so many weeks or not, I thought i read somewhere that you should layoff the weights dor a few days every so many weeks.
I also do cardio Monday, Wednesday and Fridays if that makes any difference.
Cheers
karatetricker Sat, May 20th, 2006, 06:15 PM Depending where you read it, it's recommended you take a full week off every 12 weeks, sometimes sooner, sometimes later.
I'd say you're just about ready for a week off.

I was wondering why my lifting seemed to have stalled a bit, could this be the reason, my body needing to recoup ready to start again, what about the cardio should i take a week off from that too.

When I take a week off, I take off from all exercise and eat around maintenance.
And yes, many people find coming back after a week off means their lifts go up from before they took off.

Reckon i might just have a week away from all the weights and cardio then, i am hopefully going to be starting SGX very soon.
I Think it will be hard not to train though, have to admit to feeling a little bit washed out.
Thanks for your time.
Omaha Sat, May 20th, 2006, 10:40 PM Why? Why does resting a week after 12 weeks (or what ever number you pick) do anything for you?
Just remember to switch your routine. Work in dumbbells where you used a bar. Switch the days up. Mess around with the exercises you do.
Your body doesn't give a damn what you look like, it doesn't care what you can dead lift, it doesn't care how many 300 squats you can do. All it wants to do is complete the work you make it do. You have to remember the body is designed to survive, nothing more. So it will put in just enough energy to do what ever it is your are doing anything more is waste and waste might mean death.
If you work the same muscles the same way week in and week out, your body isn't stupid, it knows you do this. It will adapt (therefor doing bare minimum hence the drop off in growth etc), and that is when you need to change.
A week rest means nothing to me because it doesn't make any sense.
Hort Sat, May 20th, 2006, 10:45 PM If you feel mentally or physically tired, give it a break... or at least a change-up; but there is no science that's proven that you 100% need to take off time or even switch up your routine. You're only doing a 3 day a week split, not like it's 2-a-days, daily.
jwdiho Sun, May 21st, 2006, 12:41 AM Rest weeks work. At least with heavy lifting.
With cardio, more than 3-4 days off and you already start to lose what you've gained. Of course, you don't have to be ready to run a marathon at any given time so time off cardio can be helpful on the mind.
I'd maybe stop lifting and cut the cardio down. Then next rest period, stop cardio and cut the lifting down.
No scientific reasons, just a thought.
