View Full Version : Great Green Tea... but ridiculously expensive.
Justitia Wed, May 10th, 2006, 04:54 PM I decided to try drinking green tea directly rather than supplements. After gagging on so many that I bought, like at Whole Foods, I decided to do a little research on -line.
This site seems very reliable and knowledgeable. And their teas seem to be the absolute premium. But, man the prices are high! high! high!
But I just ordered the one I linked to and am drinking it now, prepared according to their instructions. Apparently, if you do it properly, you can use the same leaves over and over again... which helps cut down the cost.
But I must tell you all... the tea is just heavenly...
EDIT: I forgot to put in the link to the site.... :o Spring 06 - Pre-Qingming West Lake Long Jing (http://www.goldenteahouse.com/tea.php?tea=76)

It's only $6.20 for a quarter pound. I tried a lot of different teas over the years. I've found that the Chinese greens teas don't have that grassy seaweed taste that Japanese teas do. My favorite used to be Dragonwell. But I switched over to the one above. It has a taste similar to Dragonwell but is a bit sweeter.
Justitia Thu, May 11th, 2006, 03:17 AM Thank you for the link. I realized I forgot to put in the link to the tea I bought so I have now edited my original post to include the link.
I believe the tea I linked is also called by dragon well. I really love it. So I will be sure to try your recommendation.
Sutch Thu, May 11th, 2006, 08:10 PM oh WOW! That tea you bought is ridiculously expensive. Jeez, and I thought paying $10+ for a quarter pound was expensive. :)
I've never tried a tea that expensive. Let me know how it compares with what I suggested.
Anyways, for those thinking about trying green tea go for the loose leaf rather than teabags. It's a lot more cost effective and better quality.
Kino Fri, May 12th, 2006, 11:01 AM Check out Tealuxe (http://www.tealuxe.com/goto/ourteas.html) for your next order of Dragonwell. It's 50g for $10 and they've got exellent grade teas.
mastover Fri, May 12th, 2006, 11:42 AM For all you green tea afficionados, what is your opinion on this tea:

Green tea, especially in capsule form, is a staple in my fat loss stack when I prepare for a show. But the link above describes a tea that sounds too good to be true. I do not take any stimulant type fat burners, nor ephedrine (banned from most natural orgs) so this tea looks mighty interesting.
Walt, any thoughts??

I second Special Teas! Ive always had great service from them and they have reasonable prices. If youre not sure what kind of green tea youd like, they have sample packs, and flavored green too.
mastover: Yeah that kinda looks pseudosciency. University of Blah Blah says this, but they dont link to the article/journal? I dunno...
If you can stomach the flavor, you might want to try yerba mate tea. To be perfectly honest, it tastes like swamp water to me, but the post docs in my lab from South America love it. Its definately a different kind of stimulant-- In college I would drink it when I had to pull overnighters and before workouts.

Ha, well not being a fan of pseudoscience or swamp water, I'll stick with my "Walmart Special" Fat Loss Stack - Green Tea caps and Fish Oil :)

I remember another post of yours regarding implements of making tea. I would like ot get something I could plug in the office to heat water but I don't want it to have the coil inside the water. I can't stand that taste. (Plus I am pretty crazy about bottled waters, and have one brand I use for making coffee, etc. and will use for tea.)
Do you (or anyone else have any recommendations?
I tried doing a second "infusion" the next day and the taste was very pedestrian. So I think I will save the tea for when I am sitting and working over several hours so I can go through several infusions at the same time. It is just too expensive to make only one cup.
I just spent a fair amount of monay upgrading my offee-making capacities this past winter but I fear it will start gathering dust as I am beginning ot love drinking this tea...
h2onabe Sun, May 14th, 2006, 10:02 AM haha, well, instead of letting it gather dust, you could sell off whatever you can and use the money to buy more tea until you figure out how to make it last longer :D

In addition to green tea, I love drinking yerba mate as well. I go back and forth between the two. The stuff is insanely cheap, like $5 for 2.2 lbs. I currently drink the Canarias brand. The leaves are cut real small so it infuses fast enough that it can be made in a coffee maker. Justitia, have you ever thought of trying yerba mate as well? You can still make good use of your coffee machine to brew mate.
As for preparing green tea, I just use a electric kettle. Heats up water real quick. You just have to time it so you get the right temp.
