View Full Version : Hello, newbie here... just a quick personal Q?
No_Name Sun, May 7th, 2006, 04:51 PM ok, i was hoping to get a bit of advise here regarding something kind of personal.
well, you see, i have anorexia and i'm slowly starting to recover fully for the second time. the 1st time i recovered i took up weight training and rebuilt a bit of my muscle mass. i want to do this again and i tried a couple of week ago but i couldn't hardly lift the bar which only had 10lbs on it, i yust to lift at 40 - 60lbs so you can understand when i felt so angry and frustrated at myself.=( anyway, how would you recommend i should start weight lifting? i brother advised me to down a lucozade before my work out to give me a bit of pep. can you maybe advise me on anyway or program to help me rebuild my muscle mass? if this helps i am:
105 lbs
5'6 1/2
a typical menu for the day consists of the following:
8:00 am - toast + PB+ Ensure Nutritional drink
11:00 am - handful of dried fruit
2:00pm - small salad sandwich + juice
5:00 pm - homemade chicken fajita
7:30 - 8:00 pm - mixed bowel of fruit (plum, dried fruit, pear, etc) + evaporated whole milk.
thank you very much for your time and i am open to any suggestions... again thanks very much.
1FastGTX Sun, May 7th, 2006, 05:54 PM Hello, and welcome. :)
I'm glad you are here, and I'm glad to hear that you're beating this thing and trying to be more healthy. Good for you! :tucool:
Start by reading the sticky threads at the top of each forum section. This should help you develop a weightlifting plan. I would probably recommend something simple and low in volume right now, perhaps a full-body routine where you do one exercise for each major muscle group (quads, hamstrings, calves, chest, upper/mid back, lower back, shoulders, triceps, biceps, abdominals). Or upper body on one day, lower body on the next, etc.
Don't worry at all about your loss of strength. It will come back. Take the 10 pounds off the bar and lift only the bar. Can you do that? If not let us know what exercise you are trying to do and we will suggest some alternatives you can do which will be lighter in weight.
As for Lucozade, I don't know if you need that. It just looks like a high carb drink (unless I have found the wrong product, is this it? http://www.thelssa.com/lssa/shop/productdetail_template.asp?ProductPK=22). If you need some pep it may help, but you could also have a bit of coffee or some fruit. This product doesn't really look "bad," I just don't know how much it will actually help you.
You look like you are on the right track with your diet! I would personally suggest you try to eat a little more protein, such as in your second and last meals. Can you add some to those? Perhaps a half a can of tuna, or some turkey/chicken, etc. You could even have a couple of hard boiled eggs and a few pieces of turkey bacon (actually scrambled eggs + turkey bacon = one of my favorite meals). Just some thoughts... :)
Good luck and keep us posted. :tucool:
HevyMetal Sun, May 7th, 2006, 06:04 PM ...Lucozade...hmmm.. sounds like you're from England.
Putting on muscle mass takes calories and nutrients to repair, build and maintain the muscle tissue (as well as the rest of your body).
So.........you've got to EAT.
Never mind what you see in the mirror.
Have someone take a photograph of you standing alongside others in a group. That way if you are 50lbs underweight, let's say, you will see this right away in comparison to others. Whereas if you just look in the mirror you perception will no doubt be skewed.
Look up on Fitday or Nutridiary (sites) to find out approx. what you should weigh for your frame, age and height, and the caloric consumption necessary to achieve this.
Remember, if your going for muscle mass you're going to need good food.
If you start lifting weights and don't change your diet and retain food, you will be worse off than doing nothing.
Lucozade, as I recall it, is a quick energy carb-based pick-me-up drink.
It would supply energy during a workout and help to prevent you going "catabolic' during same but it will do nothing for building muscle.
h2onabe Sun, May 7th, 2006, 06:38 PM first off, like 1fastgtx said, it's great to see you taking it upon yourself to become stronger than what's gained so much power over you. it sounds like the mindset you've got will get you there as along as you don't let yourself lose that motivation.
second...when i first read your post, your post said you have 0 posts  don't know what to make of that...i read a post right? :D
the replies you've gotten so far are the basics that i've been reading about the whole year or so that i've been lurking on this site. the info here is great and the support everyone gives each other is outstanding. like they said, keep everyone posted on your progress. :gl:
