View Full Version : Any ideas for healthy snacks to eat at work?
Bahamut727 Sun, May 7th, 2006, 03:48 AM At my work when Im on my lunch break the only choice of food I have is our Employee Dining Room, which has food that is sooooo bad (both nutritionally and tasing...) to make it worse its been sitting out all day.
Naturally I want to avoid eating this stuff.... the problem is im trying to think of some meals that I could bring to work to eat on my lunch that would be nutritional and protein rich. Any ideas? I would ideally like to have a few that I like so i can bring different things and not always the same thing.
I have access to a fridge, microwave, and toaster.
thanks for any help!

Demon Knight Sun, May 7th, 2006, 07:58 AM You just need to plan ahead. Cook lots of chicken, turkey, lean beef etc over the weekend as well as pasta and brown rice. Wholewheat bread, tortillas or pitta bread is useful for making sandwiches. Portion them out according to your calories and put them in the freezer. Before you go to bed, take your portions out for the next day and stick them in the fridge. A cool bag might be worth investing in, as poultry is dangerous if its kept at room temperature for too long. You don't need to take veg and fruit to work but make sure you are getting a decent amount of veg and fruit per day (400g or 5 portions). Some chopped up red pepper or perhaps some strawberries.....
You could always buy some good protein bars too in case you really REALLY don't have the time to prepare a proper meal.
MannishBoy Sun, May 7th, 2006, 10:14 AM I agree with all of the above. I keep some fruit, some jerky, nuts, and some protein powder in my desk at work. I also bring stuff to keep in the fridge, along with a few protein bars just for emergencies. I don't make them a daily thing.
I do always try to have either a vegetable or some fruit at every feeding. I'll often make a spinach salad and leave it in the fridge. They have almost no calories before you put dressing on them, and will finish you off to full if your protein source doesn't get you there.
Andrew Sun, May 7th, 2006, 10:22 AM If you have a fridge and microwave, you can bring basically whatever you want. One option is when you cook dinner, you could cook an extra plate, stick it in the fridge, then keep it in the work fridge the next day until lunch.
gravityhomer Sun, May 7th, 2006, 11:59 AM Some of my favorites:
protein powder and water (I keep a jug at my desk)
Peanuts
hummus + any non-sugary, non-fat carb snack (like pretzels, or healthy cracker, nacho)
Protein bar
Hard boiled egg (made the night before)
Baby carrots
mastover Sun, May 7th, 2006, 06:26 PM If I'm in a pinch I like to chew up 12 dessicated liver tablets and 1 ounce of almonds or walnuts. I get 28 gr of protein, 5-6 gr of very low glycemic carbs, and 15-17 gr of very healthy fats.
Yummy!!
