View Full Version : Best Bar for protein to Carb ratio
Mr_Potato_Head Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 10:15 AM Wonder if you guys can help. I am after some recommendations for the best supplement bars in terms of protein to carb ratio.
I really need to up my protein levels without increasing carbs too much. Ideally I want around 30 grams or more of protein.
Have looked around and there are a few but would appreciate any comments from the professionals :)
charlesg Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 11:25 AM I am NOT a professional but I've always heard whey protein powders mixed in a shake where a much better source than bars. Mainly because in bars, they have to add because of texture and consistancy. In a powder you don't care. You could use plain vanilla or choco whey powder and add things for flavor (fruits & nuts, peanut butter, yogurt, etc), there are a zillion reciped online. You could also use ready to serve packets a la Myoplex.
When I have to have a bar, I use Chef Jay's Tri-O-Plex peanut butter and chocolate chip... It is so good it's like a cheat meal. I have also used Pure Protein bars from Worldwide Sport Nutritional Supplements (allstarhealth.com has them cheap).
tedpod Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 11:29 AM yeah bars ar enot really optimal ....they are still very processed, and most have more badin them then good...wheyshake would be your best bed....lots of protien..minimal carbs...and cheaper
Mr_Potato_Head Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 11:32 AM Thanks guys. I am using whey but was looking for a quick option whilst I'm at work during the occasional afternoon. From what you are saying though maybe i'll just give them a miss and try to remember to pack some chicken in the morning. ;)
Gordo Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 11:51 AM keep canned tuna in the drawer and a can opener....pure protein. Don't eat it in the office though....they'll fire you just based on the smell ;)
You can also keep a shaker cup and meaured out baggies of protein powder in your desk. Just add water shake and away you go.
All quick and easy.
If you want to get creative, bake your own protein bars....you can then control everything about it.

hahaha I remember someone bringing raw fish into the office once and using our microwave to cook it. Man that office stank for like a week! Don't think people took too kindly to it
Primetime Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 12:11 PM One option is to premake the shake and store it in the fridge at work. I used to do this, but I changed my plan of attack and now:
10:00 meal at work: 28 snyders of hannover sticks, jack links beef jerky
1:00 meal at work: Turkey or tuna sandwhich on sugarless bread, 1 green apple, 1 fat free yougart
My next meal comes at 4:30 when I get home. I drink my protien shake after the fasted morning cardio.
karatetricker Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 12:54 PM I like the bars made by Next Protein - Detour and U-Turn.
cabster21 Tue, May 2nd, 2006, 03:38 PM Reflex pit-stop bars. Taste great, 35grams of protein low in sugar etc Not sure if they're available outside of the UK...
Atkinson Wed, May 3rd, 2006, 12:55 AM You know, I hate to say it but Ive grown fond of the South Beach bars. They have a perfect 40/40/20 PCF ratio, which I thought is kinda cool, and only about 200 calories. While not a meal, they do make snacking a bit easier.
Silver Wed, May 3rd, 2006, 03:13 AM Premier Nutrition Protein bars are good - around 8g fat, 21'ish carbs, 30 protein
works for me...plus they're the best tasting bars that I've had (WAY better than Detour bars)
Hort Wed, May 3rd, 2006, 04:34 AM Just keep in mind that, repeatedly, many of those bars are shown, in independent tests, to actually NOT have the macros they claim. They tend to have less protein, more carbs and more fat than claimed by the label.

I was thinking as I was typing my post that I wouldn't be surprised at all if the numbers were wrong.

Are these bars regulated by the FDA and such. How can they post false labels? My concern is I eat two Met-rx Protein Plus bars a day (midmorning and midafternoon). They help get 2 of my 5 meals in on the go, but I don't want them if the macros aren't legit.
greenehorn Thu, May 4th, 2006, 05:52 PM When I buy bars, I usually look most at protein to fat ratio. If I get those right, my carbs tend to take care of themselves.
Anyway, I usually have a Pure Protein bar in the afternoon for a pick-me-up. They are 20P-19C-5F, however my gym carries a 30P version *AND* a sugar free 30P version.
My favorite now however is one called Xtreme Protein. It is 30P-44C-8F, but also has 5g of creatine in it. I start my workout days with a whey protein shake at wake-up, then work out, and one of these bars immediately afterwards in the car on the way to work with a banana. The chocolate mint flavor tastes exactly like Thin Mint cookies!
