Hi,

I have a question about psyllium. I note that you have been having it consistently and together with other supplements. Considering that psyllium has the ability to "bind" things together, will other supplements like glucosamine be wasted and passed out of the body insteady of being absorbed?

I'm asking because I am wary of mixing them and don't want to waste my other supplements. Quite pricey. :D

I can't answer your specific question, because I don't know the answer. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Also, I've not supplemented with fiber in years. I get plenty of fiber from my regular diet.

Then don't mix them. Thats the simplest solution.

Psyllium is a natural bulking agent that has a laxative effect on the body. Essentially, agents like psyllium, and their synthetic counterparts flood the lower intestinal tract with water and stimulate the nerve endings in your colon. Together, this generates the urge to evacuate your bowels. In fact, if you've ever used too strong a dose of a laxative product you know that you can get kind of a weakness-in-the-legs feeling as your nerve ending get overstimulated.

Now, to answer your specific question, yes, there is an issue of timing. Somewhat intuitively, if you just ingested something and you evacuate your bowels 15 or 20 minutes later, then depending on what you just ate and its bioavailability, say, a piece of beef versus a malt, then there is a good chance that you may eliminate what you have eaten or ingested prior to absorbtion. As a previous poster suggested, it would indeed be better to wait than to guess on timing as you could end up producing some very expensive organic matter!

Hi John n guys,

Thanks for your responses. Obadiah, thanks heaps for the useful reply. Now, I wait 2 hrs before I take my glucosamine. I haven't emptied my bowels 15-20 mins after psyllium. I take it after dinner and then do my business next morning. The label did say that it will take about 17 hrs before I feel the effect. It's been true to its words. I actually feel quite good in the tummy after I take it though it doesn't taste that great. It's ok but there's better tasting things.

When I met my lady friend 4 years ago, she had trouble with her knees and walking up and down stairs. She has been blending Knox Nutrajoint with glucosamine + Heather's Acacia Powder in tomato juice before breakfast. Now she can take stairways frontwards and backwards just to show off what a 60 year lady can do. Now she also does aerobics 4 or 5 nights a week. Absolutely no difficulty with mixing the powders, and she gets full effect from each product.

Hi philipj

That sounds great. I have looked into it and nutrajoint seems like a reputable product worth a try. I am still unsure why she would mix nutrajoint with Acacia Powder, which is fibre. It seems Acacia contains no psyllium and is an organic fibre (they imply psyllium isn't). Since it is fibre anyway, I am still concerned that mixing it will waste Nutrajoint. I am keen on getting Nutrajoint though.

She is 60 years of age, and had IBS(irratible bowel Syndrome), and she combined that with the Knox Nutrajoint. Now she has neither problem.

Further I used to use a Life Plus Colodyne, which they called their 'biggest moving' product, with protein, and a number of other healthy things, and the all worked together. Zero problems.

My lady friend uses a combination that works for her. That saves us a lot of university studies. This works for her. Good luck to you.
