Hi all,

I have looked everywhere in South Africa for Steel Cut Oats and have been unable to find them. Thus I have deduced the following... They must be called something else here.

Yesterday I was at the health store to buy my usual rolled oats and next to them was "Whole Oats" (self explanatory) and next to that was "Course Oat Bran" which looked like the whole oats only roughtly chopped up.

Is this "Steel Cut Oats"?

Any opinions?

I've also sometimes bought "Oat bran". That's just the bran part, though, ground up, and is different from steel cut oats (which are the whole oat groat chopped into several pieces).

If it's any help, steel cut oats here in the UK are sometimes called either "pinhead oats" or "Irish oatmeal", so you could try asking by those names.

And they'll look more like this:

To find out where or if McCann's Oats are sold in SA, try this: mailto: sales@odlums.ie

I would but the shipping to South Africa is very expensive what with our weak currency and customs problems.

I ordered an accumeasure BF caliper and myotape from BB.com and waited for 1 and a half months for it to come and then still had to pay an extra third of the price to get it through customs. The only reason I ordered from BB.com was cos no-one here sells BF calipers.

Hey there,

Thanks for the link... I dont know why I never thought of looking up Jungle Oats. They are one of the biggest brands in ZA but I have only ever seen the quick oats in the store that I shop at. I never considered that they may have other products.

I am looking on their web site as we speak and hopefully will find something useful.

Thanks once again...

I found an interesting link to a page all about different types of oats. Although I am now more confused than before I read it

It's pretty simple:

Groats = whole oats, husk removed.

Steel cut = groats cut into marginally smaller bits.

Rolled/old fashioned oats = groats steamed and rolled flat.

Quick-cooking = steel cut groats steamed and rolled flat (or old fashioned minced up further)

Stick with the least refined you can, either steel cut or old-fashioned (I do old fashioned simply because they are easier to prepare and unlike 1FastGTX I don't have the iron jaw and teeth to eat them raw. :eat: )
