View Full Version : What should I do? (pics)
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 07:55 PM Okay, I am 15, and I have been obese for my whole life until i turned 13 years old. I peaked at 5,3 200 pounds, and then i realized something had ot be done and began to lose weight vigorously. I lost around 60 pounds in just 4-5 months. I lost a lot of size, but i remember not notcing a change because my fat looked the same, just pudgier. I lost weight by playing a LOT of basketball, and eating very little amounts. Its been a few years since and I had started working out again after gaining 10 pounds through improper diet. I bulked up a bit however, my body still has that sort of pudgy appearence. I have bitch tits (my chest is toned underneith) and although I have a faint six pack, i have a bad case of love handles, and when i bend over or sit down, my stomach takes a really ugly appearence. What can I do to get rid of this? I'm relaly hoping that this is fat and not extra skin so that I can get rid of it cause I have been using the skin excuse for a longgggg time now to not have to diet. By the way I still do a LOT of cardio in basketball, however, even though I really dont eat much junk, I eat a LOT of what i do eat which is not what you would call healthy (not too bad for you either)
Hort Wed, April 26th, 2006, 08:04 PM You just have a fair amount of fat to lose. Your only 15. Go up to the beginners forum and read through the various threads on diet and exercise. Don't worry about getting scientific about it, just get a better handle on what you eat when and get that activity in.
:tucool:
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 08:07 PM The thing is that I'm VERY active, and I really don't eat anything unecessary. Do you have any tips? Do I have a long way to go? BTW I'm 5,8 165
betastas Wed, April 26th, 2006, 08:25 PM Start a basic weight training program at your school gym. Learn about nutrition, and the proper amount for you to eat. Do not worry about "dieting" right now. You need the food to grow. If you deny yourself too much, you will affect your rate of growth.
However, drop all of the following foods:
Chips, Fries, White Bread, all large pasta servings, any chocolate, ALL Pop, Energy Drinks and yes, even juice (moderate it severly). Drop eating fast foods, corner store foods, and even greasy or sugary cafeteria foods. You can make nutritious lunches at home to take to school if the cafeteria doesn't serve anything healthy. This was the case at my highschool. This may all sound like a chore to you, but once you get into it it's second nature. Remember, you need to treat yourself well to look well.
Basically, you need to eat the right foods. Get in wholesome grains such as Oatmeal, whole wheat bread and whole grain ceral (Kashi Cereal is GREAT, but not the Crunch variety of it). Lean meats, such as chicken, turkey, lean beef, lean pork and some fish. Vegetables, most importantly the dark green kind (green peas, spinach, romaine lettuce, brocolli). Fruits, preferably oranges, apples, pears and a banana now and then.
Eat many meals a day. I'm talking 5-6 meals, or at least nearly-sized snacks. Divide your daily food so that you eat roughly the same amount at each meal, even if this means having smaller lunches and suppers.
Do not skip breakfast. Ever. Is this clear? Ever! It is the most important meal of the day. Eat a healthy carb choice such as oatmeal and a piece of fruit, and try to get some healthy protein in with it. I eat eggs daily, but some people don't like that. Try to get protein in every meal.
At 15 years old, concern yourself with eating healthy in moderate portions. I wouldn't recommend trying to eat less to lose the fat, but exercise and look into a weight lifting program. You are growing right now, and your body will need its nutrients. You are in the opening stages of the best growth in your life (bar the toddler period), take advantage of it by fueling your body with the proper, healthy nutrition. Head over to the beginner forums and browse some of the posts to see what people are eating. Good luck, I know you can do it. :tu:
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 08:33 PM Woah I feel really out of shape now. I really want to try the more meals but smaller portions thing, but it would be really hard as I don't have the time being in school and all. I already do a good amount of lifting, but I'm thinking about stopping because I really want to work on basketball. I play very vigoorously. As for my diet, for breakfast, I really don't eat much, just enough to fill me up. For lunch I eat whatever is served in school which is a moderate portion and I assume it can't be too unhealthy. After school I usually buy a bagel. At night I eat a TON of rice however with pork, sometimes eggs. I really don't eat veggies too much, but I do eat fruit. As for drinks, all i basically drink is Gatorade and water (water 90% of the time). I really dont eat chips and i eat fries maybe twice a month. Lately I increased a bit, but I heard somewhere that the fat is because I haven't "finished" losing the weight, and started bulking a bit early. I feel like im in the best shape of my entire life however.
tennisball Wed, April 26th, 2006, 09:04 PM Lift weights!!! You can play basketball and lift weights. You don't have to choose between the two. Just stay active. And LIFT. And lift properly. Find some friends who will do it with you. Join a sports team at school.
Drop the gatorade. It's just like soda- all sugar. Have smaller portions of rice, and try to get some lean chicken and fish instead of pork, if you can. Eat a larger breakfast and a smaller dinner.

betastas Wed, April 26th, 2006, 09:11 PM School lunches made in the cafeteria can be very unhealthy. Don't assume anything. Vegetables cooked in oils, deep fried foods, greasy foods, etc.
If you don't have enough time, then you really don't want it that bad. Harsh, but true.
I'm a full time university student, going to class about 30 hours a week and working outside of class about the same amount. I still find time to eat a minimum of five times a day, because I prepare my food ahead of time. I realize you still live at home, so if you feel that talking to the primary food maker about taking lunches to school, I'm sure they will be willing to help out.
You can do it. It does take work. You are good to be concerned about your health young, but you cannot assume things about food. This is how you screw yourself over. I understand that you are young and probably aren't really into learning enough about nutrition, but take a look at where you were - thats the byproduct of doing what you want and misinformation about food. I recently completed a cut where I was never hungry - Lost 15 lbs of pure fat in three months. I credit vegetables for this sucess in keeping my appetite under control.
Weightlifting will increase your muscle mass when done properly. You will be able to shoot more accurately and further, and will be able to jump higher. Your metabolism will also increase and you will maintain lean mass, both of which improve your chances of losing fat.
No one really wants to eat vegetables until they start. Once you start, you don't want to stop. Over a span of two weeks, adding green vegetables to my diet dramatically improved my feeling of well being, my happiness, and improved my recovery rates and health. Vegetables have so many natural vitamins and fibre that its a bad idea to skip them.
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 09:22 PM I really appearciate all the answers. Thats the reason I came to this forum, because of all the thoughtful and educated replies. You people know what you're talking about. Since I'm asian, rice is basically a staple of my diet. Do you have a reccomendation for how much to eat? Also, if I wanted the vainy and really lean look, do I have a long way to go or in other words, do I look like I still have a large amount of body fat?
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 09:37 PM And BETASTAS. I saw your other thread with your cut results, and they were fantastic. Were you in a similar situation before you started cutting?, because if you were, maybe I can take up a similar routine. Those are the results I want to see :tu:
tree Wed, April 26th, 2006, 09:39 PM a few good months of hard work
betastas Wed, April 26th, 2006, 10:13 PM Yes. Those results come from lifting weights for several years (learning all the while, not all my working out was effective), clean eating and dieting below my maintenance calories. I also eat protein in every meal, up to about 200g a day, and eat 5 or 6 complete meals daily. Lots of hard work and discipline is necessary, but that becomes part of the allure.
For you though, I recommend what I posted above. Eat more lean meats, veggies and whole grains. As for Rice, you can measure your servings in cups. 1 Cup of rice is about 200 calories I believe. Check it out on calorie websites. You need to eat clean, eat until satisfied but not stuffed, and exercise regularly. Some of the other posters on the forum may be able to contribute some more about teenage nutrition. Whatever you do though, don't starve yourself or try to eat little.

Haha yeah I know. :D
A few months of dedication and you will be great. A few weeks and you will see amazing differences.
Lewis9024 Wed, April 26th, 2006, 11:02 PM I really appearciate all these replys. I've been like this for a few years, and I've been to these forums a few times and convinced myself it was just loose skin, but its pretty obvious i still have a bit of cutting to do. I know about the eating healthy part, but should I focus on more cardio or weight training? And for weight training, should i continue doing full body workouts like I am already?

Both. You should ALWAYS weight train, and while some people lose fat without cardio, it can make it a lot easier/faster. However, if you're playing a real lot of basketball, you might not need additional cardio. You have to find out what works for you.
Good luck.

What do you eat with the rice? I'm Asian as well and the typical Asian food has way too much oil and basically is all fried, even vegetables. For me, I had to cut out Asian food and switch to a "Western diet" with stuff like oatmeal, broiled chicken breast, and steamed vegetables.
It's funny how many Asians think of Western food as fattening, but in fact, the healthiest foods are also Western.

I eat a lot of rice with grilled chicken and veggies. I believe its nutrional values are very good. I could look up the numbers if your interested. I used Nutridiary and have all my meals on there with the nutritional values, the macros, and the portions.
Lewis9024 Thu, April 27th, 2006, 09:57 PM today was the first day i really worked on dieting, and its really not hard since im kinda used to eating somewhat healthy already. In the morning I really didnt eat much at all because my mother ran out of oatmeal and ended up cooking something unhealthy with a wok. in the afternoon, i ate school cafateria tacos and drank milk. then for dinner, i ate about one full plate of rice, with spinach, a bit of beef, and almost half a chicken cooked with ron browns rotessire thing. Do you thing i should stick with a routine like that?

Nope. Three meals won't cut it, especially with a small unhealthy breakfast. I know it would seem hard to fit more meals in your day, being in high school, but once I started it really became a staple of my routine. For example... consider bringing a protein shake to school and drinking it as you are walking to your next class (some time in between breakfast and lunch). I dropped eating cafeteria food about two months into my freshman year, and began bringing my own lunch. This opens up a far healthier option for your diet, seeing as you could basically bring anything (my lunchbox has seen the likes of hard boiled egg whites, fish, oatmeal...). It might sound strange now, but after a little while, you will probably feel as though you wished you had never even tried school food. The milk, if it is 1% or skim, is a great choice. Also, try to eat something when you get home from school... such as a can of tuna on whole wheat bread, or something similar (protein + complex carbs). Your dinner could be better, but considering your cultural background, I'm guessing you don't want to stray far from it. Try to eat less rice, and when you are eating the rotisserie chicken, eat breast meat without the skin only (less sat fat), and don't eat half of a chicken, even though that would be awesome  .
Sorry if that sounded like I was bragging about myself :o .
Question: How much oatmeal do you eat when you have it and what else do you eat at breakfast?
Lewis9024 Sat, April 29th, 2006, 11:22 PM actually i tried oatmeal yesterday and it tastes.... really bleh. I just brought some of the Total brand of cereal as it seems to have a lot of nutrition while tasting good. And for lunch, i just realized that the school also serves cold cuts and im pretty sure thats good for you. For dinner I'm cutting down on the rice, but I really do a lot of activity during the day, so I'm really hungry by nighttime.

If you want to try oatmeal again get some Quaker 100% Oatmeal and put 1/2 cup of oats and 1 cup of skim or fat free milk in a large bowl and microwave for 3 minutes. Then add some Splenda or other sugar substitute and try 1/4 cup of sugar free maple syrup. About 305 calories and delicious!
Gordo Mon, May 1st, 2006, 07:33 AM Rice can be a staple.... get used to measuing things out. Make sure it's brown rice and not white.
Really just clean up your diet and watch your portions. Drink lots of water (agreed with dropping the gatorade....to be used after high endurance sport replenishment only).
Starting tracking how much you eat using www.nutridiary.com or www.fitday.com just to get an idea of how much you are currently eating. Weigh and measure things for a couple of weeks to get it clear in your mind what proper portions should look like.
Also. lift weights and with all that you will start to change. Your age will help immensely with a lot of it.
guava Mon, May 1st, 2006, 09:32 AM i just realized that the school also serves cold cuts and im pretty sure thats good for you.
Not usually.
Cold cuts are usually pretty high in fat, and almost always high in sodium. Stay away from bologna and salami especially. Corned beef, black forest ham, or roast beef is not too bad. Roast turkey or roast chicken is a little better, and fat free roast turkey/chicken or fat free ham is better yet, but I doubt those are what your school serves.
Do you eat fish? Salmon and tuna would be great to add to your diet.
It's not essential that you eat more than three times a day, but it's a good habit to get into. If you can't prepare three meals, just eat half of each meal at a time and save the rest for later. If you plan to eat six meals without counting calories or planning ahead, then you might tend to overeat.
Lewis9024 Wed, May 3rd, 2006, 09:16 PM in school, their serving turkey but im not sure of the fat content. I eat turkey, two slices of swiss, lettuce, tomato and some mustard. I cannot NOT eat white rice, because I've been eating it for 15 years and i really can't see myself stopping. I do see a bit of progress in only 4 days however. My calorie intake has decresed dramatically. However I do have a question. How often should I be working out per week? Im doing it 3 times a week right now, 2 days of rest in between. I am playing basketball in between though..

To quote Yoda, there is only do, or do not.
Cannot is overcome when you decide what is more important to you.

Try alternating rice days and slowly cut from there onwards? It worked for me.

the thing is... is if you eat often enough... every 2.5 to 3 hours, you will NOT be REALLY hungry by nighttime... cold cuts are not really all that great for you, they are a better choice than the other food, but still not great... they have a lot of sodium and preservatives in them
try adding cinnamon and splenda to the oatmeal, it tastes GREAT that way... plain oatmeal tastes horrible... but w/ cinnamon & splenda and even some apple cut up into it, it's GREAT!
HevyMetal Thu, May 4th, 2006, 11:59 PM hell, man..you're only 15..still basically growing for several more years yet.
You look like you're gradually making the transition from puppy fat to adulthood on schedule.
Shoulders are looking good. Basic frame looks good.
You look like a good candidate for weightlifting.
I wouldn't worry about the "bitch tits" too much right now. At your age there's a lot of hormonal stuff going on anyway.
Being as you're a very active guy and you already put the obesity thing to rest I wouldn't mess with the diet "too' much now as you're still growing and if you're going to do weights, at your age I wouldn't be doing that on a highly restricted diet.
Just stay away from the "junk" and useless calorie food if possible and eat stuff that does you're body good.
Ironically, once you get into the habit of eating healthy good foods you'll find that all that other stuff starts to taste like barf.
Lewis9024 Sat, May 6th, 2006, 01:33 AM Thanks alot for that hevymetal. The thing is that, my fat has been the exact same way for the past 3 years. I've gotten a lot bigger, but the fat hasn't gone away and to me its about time I do something about it. I know this might sound niave, but I want a body that I would be proud of flaunting while I'm at school etc.. I heard when your fat "softens" that its a good sign as the fat is breaking down? I used to confuse this with loose skin, but its much much thicker than that. I kind of had everything you said in mind, but just needed conformation from somebody experenced. Again thanks :jumping:
