Cold turkey... anything will be pretty tough.
Physically, you should lose the headache quite soon - a couple of days I'd say. Mentally/habitually you might still have a strong desire to drink coffee - although I'd say it's probably nothing compared to a nicotine addiction.

Stick with the cold turkey if you can.

Otherwise, Perhaps try weening yourself off of it?

8-10 cups is a lot of caffeine.

Depending on your body, caffeine can have a half-life of anywhere between a few hours to a couple days. I think the average is around 6 hours. So if you think about it, the more you drink, the more it builds up in your body. With 8-10 glasses per day, you would probably be shocked if you knew how much was really in your body. I know I used to drink a fairly large amount of soda. I gradually reduced my intake to about half of the previous abount over a week, and didn't feel bad. At that point I stopped cold turkey. I would periodically get headaches anyhow due to higher then normal blood pressure (happy to say I don't have that problem anymore) so the headaches that I got were about on par with what I was used to. I can't say exactly, but it was probably around 2 days that I felt 100%. I didn't have a headache all that time, but wasn't quite myself.

cooperspale is definitely right about the nicotine thing. Cutting out the caffeine didn't even compare to stopping smoking. And considering I was a very light smoker, I wouldn't even want to imagine a heavy smoker trying to quit. I was very irritable for a good 1-2 weeks when I went through that phase.

I have stopped drinking coffe a few times, and I usually feel quite bad for 4 - 5 days.

Nowadays, I have decided its not toxic enough and tastes too good for me to bother to lay off the habit.

To really get rid of the headaches you will need to quit drinking caffiene completely until your body finishes detoxing the withdrawls are gone. After that you can add back in what you want. Maybe drink decaf coffee until your body quits the withdrawls. My headache lasted for about 2 days and the only thing worse is a migraine. I never found anything that would make it go away Advil, Aleve, or Tylenol. An icepack on the back of the neck seemed to help though.

I used to drink around 5 liters of diet coke a day :spaz: <-- and that was me! Caffeine was doing bad bad things to me! I was sitting here one night and I could feel my heart beating - thumpthump thumpthump thumpthump thumpthump skip thumpthump thumpthump thumpthump skip <-- freaked me out! I called the Dr. and he said do you drink a lot of caffeine? I told him I did and he said that it could cause that. It was also affecting my vision. All of that stuff has stopped since I stopped.
One day I was talking to Lisa (John?s wife) and told her that I was drinking so much and John told me I should stop drinking that much :p So I did, I stopped 100%. Actually I stopped that day and haven't had any since. This has been since the first of January. I had a mean headache for about 1.5 weeks. I just took Advil and eventually it went away. I have no desire for caffeine now and I like water. Good luck on the withdrawals :)

The best way to stop any addictive substance is not, cold turkey, many studies have shown that if you wish to stop smoking and or a medication or caffeine as the case may be, a good slow ween has better long term effects of quitting and staying off the given substance, the idea is that by cutting your 8 - 10 cups a day to 4-6 cups a day for a week, then 1-2 cups a day for another week, then stopping all together. you will find that you dont suffer from the headaches, or shakes. Making the quit process easier on you and your body, and at the same time keeping your stress down because you do still get some caffeine just not as much.

Hope this helps.

My thoughts exactly. As I've said before, I'm hopelessly addicted. I am awfully strong willed and I absolutely hate the idea that I am being controlled by caffeine. For me, it's just an ego thing. Other than that, I haven't seen a good reason to give it up. I drink it black so there are no calories involved. I've never read or heard of any proof that it causes any real problems.

Because of the ego thing, I've tried to give it up a few times but then I feel like I have the flu. As long as it's legal and cheap, I guess I'll stay addicted.
