So I have put alot of thought into this and wanted to know your opinions. I picked Ross and Gerard becuase i think they are excellent examples of two different goals I have or had in the past. I admire both of their physiques, but I think my long term goal would be a body type like Ross (left) so I don't have to try to maintain bulky muscles my whole life

Whose body type would you pick or would your goal be closer to???

Gordo

Ros is more attainable and maintainable.....but I wouldn't mind looking like Gerard even for a while. My wife would disagree however.

To hold on to that kind of muscle would take a lot of chicken and eggs

Mind you lean muscle on a lean body is deceiving especially if you can achieve good symmetry. By itself you can appear much bigger and heavier than you are.

I'd definetly pick Ross overall, but just once in my life I'd like to be massive. The latter will be a goal at some point.

My wife would agree with yours, she prefers Ross's build. I also asked about 5 young women here in the office and they all picked Ross....interesting views.

Edit: one girl actually said Gerard was gross...actually most of them said that in not so many words...

Somewhere in between...Ross is too skinny, but Gerard is huge! As the rest of you, I would not mind being as big as Gerard for a while, but I am sure it would get old fast with all the maintenance and food. I would like to be at Ross' bf, but about 20 pounds heavier.

I'll be the dumb guy.... who are they? Never heard either name before. I assume the one guy is a competitive BBer? How about the other?

Me too. Gerard looks terrible IMO. Ross looks good, but a tad too skinny for my tastes. A little more muscle for Ross and I'd like his look.

I don't think it's possible for me to get as big and lean as Gerard naturally. I'd like to look like Ross more I guess since I won't hit the juice. Maybe a little bigger though.

Ross Enamait is a boxer and boxing trainer. He has written many books on boxing training that are also very useful for the training enthusiast.

He has the most amazing functional strength that I personally have ever seen. If you watch some of his videos you might be amazed also.

I hate guys that are muscular and bulky and can't do a chin-up.

And I agree with Gordo that you can "appear" bigger than you are if you are lean, ripped and symmetric.

And Yes Gerard Dente is a professional BB

Darden looks very good there. Is that before or after he founded HIT? He looks pretty young there.

That was when he was getting his PHD, right before he won Mr Collegiate America and before he started work at Nautilus. He didn't discover HIT, we give that credit to Arthur Jones. In his 42 books he spread the word about HIT. He is about 62 now, in fair shape.

Props for the vintage look! I love that look and hopefully will have it myself someday...thanks Rt!

Ross Enamait ( rossboxing.com ) hands down! He busts his ass, I have seen his training videos, have a couple of his books and he is a great guy also, very personable and will answer any questions you have. And besides, Ross could outrun that musclehead any day, good strength and conditioning, the best of both worlds.

oh, BTW- Ross is around 5"9 and 175lbs. So he looks great I think! Here is one link:

Here's my unique opinion.

There are at least a dozen JSF members I can think of that have more visually appealing bodies than either of those two options. I'm not fond of the low body fat percentage look. Just as many men comment that they like women with "a little meat on their bones", that level of muscle definition on a man is not attractive to me.

My answer may sound facile - but I'd like to have whatever look is the one that springs from fulfilling my potential in the fullest and most healthy way. I only started doing this stuff a short while ago, and I am 42 with no history or experience to tell me for sure what kind of body that could be or will be.

However, for now, I tend to visualise that future body as somewhat rectangular in shape (rather than the classic tapering look) and with moderately-sized muscles, not huge, but with a kind of pleasing symmetry and look of strength and capability - and perhaps a little more body fat than many strive for.

I don't know if that means anything to anyone - I have an approximate mental image but I'm not sure that I could name anyone right now who resembles it.

I think that most women would find Ross to have the more appealing physique. It is obvious that both of these men train hard for the looks they are trying to achieve. They should both be commended for dedication and discipline. I just feel that ross has the more attractive physique.

Whose body type would you pick or would your goal be closer to???

I can't tell from looking at them. Which guy can do more squat reps at 225 pounds? That guy would be closer to my current goal.

JESUS CHRIST! THAT GUY IS NO JOKE!

Also my answer is Ross obviously. But at 6'3" I'd probably look kind of weird that cut and (proportionately) small.

Regardless of effort required to reach either, I'd pick the first guy (smaller guy). The larger guy just looks ridiculous. He'd be kind of looked at in awe and also in pity if he walked on the beach, like "Wow, that guy is obssessed" by 99% of people. Moreover, he's simply less attractive. He'd also be less spry and agile if he wanted to engage in many activities. The first guy looks more athletic and the big guy just looks like a meat head, plus he'd probably look a bit chubby or ridiculous in business attire.

Pistol squats - my FAVORITE!

I think I can actually do those ab rollouts too. The rest, I think I gotta work out for a while to get there.

Does the other guy do pistols? If not, I pick this guy.

My wife's reaction to that video was that our four year old son would like to do that stuff. She wanted to know if Ross could do 72 pullups. Apparently one summer one of the Forest Service fire crews she knew about (not one she was in) had a pullup contest. The average was about 65, but the guy who did the most did 72.

I'm guessing that Ross could do 72 pullups. Elite fire crews are in serious shape, but Ross made the clap pullups look really easy. Those are not so easy.

I can do about 16 good solid, proper form pullups (full extension at bottom with chin up to top) at a weight of 175 and my back is reasonable strong, plus I practice that exercise a lot! I think that to get to 20 and beyond takes a lot of time for anybody of significant bodyweight, but 65 on average for those guys...?

That video is impressive. Anybody doubting this guy's strength--do his one-legged squats like he's doing and do it that fast. very hard!!

That rubber band exericise is nuts! Guy is in crazy shape but it looks like much of what he does is pretty high impact.

It is high. But Hotshot fire crews are not your average joe. A typical work day for a hotshot involves 50-70 pounds of gear, 12-24 hours of hard work, and 3500-4500 Calories. For days on end. It's frequently compared to special forces training and such.

I don't know how strict they were about form. The world records for pullups that I can see online are much higher than 72 but they also allow you to dismount and mount the bar as much as you like.

I prefer Ross' build. I like his functional and athletic strength and you just dont get that being like the other guy. I doubt that the other guy despite his size and strength could do any one legged body weight squats.

I trained a lot of huge body builder types and very few of them (were talking 3 out of maybe 60) had enough flexability and athletic skill to learn how to fight (martial arts).

Bottom line, Id rather be built for GO than for SHOW.
