I jammed my finger about a month and a half ago playing basketball. I've kept playing in a rec. league since then and i rejammed it everygame to a minor, varying degree. Well, going for a loose ball in a pickup game, my finger got stuck on a guys wrist and split apart pretty hard (spock hand split). Since then I've been taping it to my middle finger when I play. That's helped not hurt it more, but its not getting better. I cannot pick anything significant up without it hurting. If I have to squeeze something, it hurts. For example, I picked up my cereal bowl from the top down and it hurt. So, I can't workout or do anything with my hand. The pain is located at the knuckle above my wedding right (2nd knuckle from the tip), on the inner right side. I can feel the pain go up my finger to the 3rd knuckle on the backside of my hand.

Is this just a jammed finger that's taking forever to heal, or something far worse? Thanks for the help.

you cuold always get your dr. to take a look. I have recurring problems with my left hand. I had to take time off before I could go ahead. Perhaps you should take some time off with it. Good luck!

Sounds like you did significant extra damage after you first injured it.

My guess is it could easily take anywhere from 4-9 months to fully recover. I 'bust' my finger rock climbing last year, same finger, same knuckle, not as painful though - I could pick things up without much pain. The doc said it was essentially the same type of injury as a jammed finger, even though it was stretched.

So my guess is what you have just a jammed finger, that will now take quite a while to heal.

For instance, with my finger, it took until about 6 months until it felt good enough to climb on again, although it still hurts if I press it, it is fine climbing. And I stopped doing anything workout related after I 'jammed' it.

However, I do heal slowly and I had broken that finger playing basketball about 15-20 years ago and it probably got decently better in 3-4 months (climbing is probably a bigger strain on it that you need for recovery).

Unfortunately those injuries don't heal quickly, and from my experience with finger and hand injuries, if you keep lifting while it hurts it could take a lot longer. I once tried to workout through a thumb injury that then got so bad I couldn’t lift for 18 months.
