Well I'm not exactly sure where to throw this question. But once a week me and my friend do this bicycle class that also includes some mild weight lifting in with it.

Anyway the cardio on the bicycle is very good for a change of pace for me, by the end we're always sweating buckets haha. I just wanted to know how I should be breathing. Usually I just breath both in mouth adn out mouth, and well I vary a lot inbetween switching a lot because I don't know how I should be breathing really, and I think that because i'm switching so much it's tiring me out even more. I've heard in mouth out nose and the reverse, actually I've heard a lot of people say different thing's so if anyone knows it'd be great help so I can get an even better workout.

I guess this can apply to any weight lifting breathing techniques aswell. But I assume that's just inhale on the negitive exhale on the positive right?

Thanks.

You should be breathing a lot. Oddly enough, for hard cardio, you are normally not ventilation limited, so any way that's "comfortable" (or possibly "less unfomfortable") is OK.

As far as weight lifting breathing - it's not quite the same because for cardio the reps are fast enough that you can't inhale on every negative and exhale on every positive, etc. Don't worry. Whatever works.

If there is a set way I'd think it'd be "In through nose, out through mouth," and not vice versa because your nose is a germ filter. It's a half-arsed attempt at stopping bacteria getting into your lungs.

I breathe in through both.

Oh I see, very interesting. Is it also to limit your intake because sometimes I feel im taking in TOO much oxygen useing double mouth action (in and out) I guess it makes more sense then in mouth out nose, then we'd be just blowing boogers everywhere.

This is just a tad off the main topic but the only guy I've read that seems to buck the trend when it comes to breathing for lifting and other ex's is Pavel Tsatsouline.

A lot of them he does in reverse order for inhale/exhale. And he seems to have all the science to back it up.

While doing cardio, breathe in whatever way is most comfortable and natural to you. However, make sure it's in a consistent pattern and that you aren't hyperventilating. While weight-lifting, breathe in during or hold it through the eccentric and exhale during the concentric. In either case, breathe with control.

While running, I usually take two short inhales through the nose and one long exhale through the mouth. This is what I felt most comfortable with after a few years of experience. Breathe control can have a huge impact on your cardio performance at race-pace levels.

I would say set a pace and stick to it. That is all you need to worry about. Once you get in the rhythm you won't have to over exert yourself so much
