View Full Version : fiber as appetite suppressant?
chops Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 02:03 PM i am considering taking fiber as an appetite suppressant. does anyone see a drawback to this ? i don't know much about which fiber is good, i was thinking Psyllium or metamucil since i heard that is the most natural one and can be taken daily. if anyone has taken both, does one work better than the other for making you feel full?
a bit of history about me. i started a heath kick/training last year and i've gone from 25%bf to currently about 15-16%. my current weight is only a few lbs less than my starting weight, so i guess it's at my setpoint that my body wants to maintain in spite of my efforts. i want to lean out some to have definition.
my problem is that i'm hungry and i end up eating. my normal intake for maintenance is about 1500-1650. i tried cut down to 1200-1300 cals (about bw x11), but i'd get hungry in the evenings and end up eating. i eat good foods, just too much of it while trying to cut. my trigger is late afternoons and after dinner so i was thinking to take the fiber around 2pm and hope that it helps for the duration of the evening. if i can stick to diet for 8 weeks, i am sure that i will reach my goal.
thoughts?
Specialbear Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 07:59 PM honestly, taking fiber will not magically cut down hunger pangs, although it will help.
I buy 3-4 heads of cabbage and eat them when im hungry. Good luck eating a whole one and still feeling hungry:)
Teg4e Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 08:10 PM I see no problem with you adding fiber to your diet, as long as you stay within the guidelines for daily fiber intake and your digestive system isn't going out of whack.
For my own diet, I eat a cup of brocolli as an appetite suppressant. With enough salt and pepper and a dash of parmesan cheese, it's a very low calorie side dish.
chops Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 08:32 PM thanks for the suggestions. i eat so many veggies that you would not believe and i drink a ton of water too. i maybe will have a 1/2 cup of oatmeal or 1c brown rice but that is the only starchy carb i eat. i get some carbs out of my peanut butter, cottage cheese, yogurt. rest are veggies. through all this, i have found out that i am a "volume eater" :( so i do as much as possible to increase the volume of food while keeping the calories low. it becomes difficult to feel satisfied with 1200 , considering my glutamine and fish caps already take almost 100 cals out of that :( and after i make sure i get enough protein, just seems that there's not enough food to keep my appetite in check. sucks!
JeremyLikness Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 08:59 PM I just don't understand why so many are so quick to jump into fiber supplements! You can get tons of fiber by focusing on vegetables and low calorie fruit, whole grains, etc. You can find shakes with fiber in them, bars, etc, and naturally increase that intake! Just a suggestion. I find that fiber and healthy fats helps fill me up and satisfy me, but I try to focus on as many natural sources as possible.

Ansett Tue, March 23rd, 2004, 09:17 PM Fats, yeah. What is your fat intake like? Are you getting enough good fats, like almonds, avacado, olive oil with your meals? Fats have the effect of slowing gastric emptying, which cause you to feel full longer. Try having a little good fat at every meal. That should help.
chops Wed, March 24th, 2004, 12:20 AM i agree 100% and my diet revolves around whole foods. it's not that i don't get enough fiber. its that i am looking for the a natural appetite supressant to get me through a couple of months of dieting (which i am not good at)

chops Wed, March 24th, 2004, 12:24 AM thanks i think that may be be it. i'm sort of trying to increase my fat right now but it's kind of tough since i will have to juggle my carbs and eat less of those. as it is right now, i usually get about 100-120g carb a day.

Specialbear Wed, March 24th, 2004, 03:24 AM did u say 1200 cals a day??
Teriliel Wed, March 24th, 2004, 07:25 AM From my understanding, 15-16% BF is about as low as you want to go and maintain for a woman. Fitness competitors will go lower for contest, but they don't maintain that in their off seasons. If you go much lower than that and try to maintain it, you will start to mess with your cycle.
15-16% BF is excellent for us ladies!!! You should be very proud of yourself for getting there! :tu:

She is female :) don't assume everyone is a 200lb 6 foot male hehe.
soltrain Wed, March 24th, 2004, 12:20 PM I use Fiber One cerial. It actually tastes pretty good and I can get 13 grams of fiber in a half cup. I just snack on it all day at my desk and am never hungy for cheat foods. Coworkers make fun of me tho which gets old.

chops Wed, March 24th, 2004, 02:57 PM i need to switch cereals then :) i get 9 grams of fiber out of 2/3 cup of my current.

chops Wed, March 24th, 2004, 03:15 PM hi teriliel, well on women, they say about 12% that abs show through. i'm not trying to get my abs to show though (I seldom do direct ab work and dont have any), but i would like more defintion in general on my arms and legs. female competitors that i have communicated with have told me they diet to get to about 7-8% temporarily. some do have problems not geting their monthly thing, but most have no problem even with low bf. i know of one fgal right now who has a show this saturday and hers came right on time :) i'm not really worried about messing up my cycle because it seems that it would be easy to rectify if it happened, and it might not happen at all.
