View Full Version : Sugar in Post Workout Shake?
Jokat Mon, March 13th, 2006, 10:30 AM Hi All,
I am currently cutting and am trying to limit my carb intakes. I am currently drinking a PWO Shake consisting of 32 g Whey, 5 g creatine and 1 cup of nonfat milk.
I was wondering firstly if the milk was enough to spike my insulin or should I add some ???Sugar???.
I would also like to use something other than milk (cos of the carbs) but I cant stomach the whey in water only.
Please can someone suggest something for me as I am at a loss. I have searched the forums and the internet but most of the shakes are quite high in carbs. I realise that it is good to have carbs around workouts but is milk in this case the best option?
Anyhow some suggestions on the sugar thing and the milk thing would be great.
Kind Regards, :D

(Dextrose)
If you put dextrose in your whey with water it will probably make it taste much better. Dextrose is VERY sweet and REALLY changes the way your shakes taste.
I'll tell you what, Vanilla Nitrean + Dextrose + Water =
Try that out. That may work best for you.
Do they sell it anywhere there?
I myself don't like milk post-workout. However there are a few guys here on JSF (and everywhere really) who do this and find it is a very good plan. I believe KarateTricker does this, and he has a great physique.

Yup, I've been using store bought chocolate milk post workout for the last 6 months or so. Coincidentally, I think I've looked the best I've ever looked during that time.
That said, it's likely not due to the chocolate milk and if I could, I would switch it for whey/dex/water in a second. But alas, I cannot as per instructions from my nephrologist (kidney doctor) thanks to some kidney problems I had 2 years ago.
I think you should either add more milk as to increase your carb consumption (decrease the whey for the added protein from the milk) or order dextrose and have the whey/dex/water. Whey in water tastes okay, but once you add dextrose it tastes GREAT!
HevyMetal Mon, March 13th, 2006, 07:33 PM That sounds a bit risky...cutting all carbs out of PWO drink.
You should have some there. Couldn't you cut them out at other times?
eleven24 Tue, March 14th, 2006, 11:42 AM Just my $.02, but I'd also drop the creatine during a cutting phase. If you're reducing calories to lose fat, then you won't be adding muscle. That being said, you're probably just flushing money down the toilet by taking creatine at this stage.
Also, carbs aren't exactly as evil as everyone makes them out to be -- provided they are "good" carbs taken at the right time. My suggestion -- take the money you save on creatine and talk to Chris/Swolecat at vizualxcellence.com (Click the banner link above).
oohchild Tue, March 14th, 2006, 11:46 AM Milk seems good enough for me, there are lactose in it. Although not sure how much sugar/carbo is recommended post workout, together with protein shake.
1FastGTX Tue, March 14th, 2006, 01:00 PM Creatine during a cut is not only okay but, for some, it works very well.

??? Creatine is not an anabolic, it will not build muscle....it facilitates recovery, restoration and helps maintain intensity during workouts.
so, even more optimal during cutting.
IMHO, during bulking when you are loaded nutrition-wise is when you actually, need LESS supps (unless your nutrition is piss poor)
