View Full Version : Walking up&down stairs
White Goodman Fri, March 10th, 2006, 07:06 PM Hi
A few of us at the office decided to walk the stairwell 3 days a week, from floor 12 to 36 - -all the way up then down.
WOW! My legs are throbbing and I've never experienced such pain, even thru a good leg workout.... Does anyone walk stairs, not the stairmaster but rather actual stairs? This is a lot harder than I expected (not cardio wise but the pain --good pain--afterwards)...

My high school football coach used to have us run stairs. OUCH!!!!!!!! Good stuff though.:tucool:

Yeah I got my 75 year old dad using stairs for cardio. He's got up to the equivalent of 12 flights - he started at about 6. It's making him feel a lot better.
You want the real deal stair torture? Firemen have this one where they have to shoulder up a hose and go up some standard high-rise worth of flights of stairs. The hose and their equipment adds about 75 pounds to their body weight.
San'dy Sat, March 11th, 2006, 11:44 AM I have in the past, had a 14 story hospital next door. Worked up to 25-35 floors on a regular basis. I would go at different speeds and sometimes do double steps. Starting out doing 24 floors may leave you sore. I think real stairs is not the same as a machine, just like a motorized treadmill is not the same as running. Machines are easier than the real world stuff. I saw a work out plan once for stair but do not have a link. The guy did all kinds of different patterns.
HevyMetal Sat, March 11th, 2006, 03:22 PM As part of my job I climb about ten bazillion ladders and stairs a day for ten hours four days a week.
I endorse it for general leg conditioning and calorie burn....BUT
Done to excess ( I don't have any choice, it's part of my job) I find it interferes with muscle growth.
If I do squats, deads and the like in the workouts weekly I then have to go to work and end up in an overtraining situation. So for me it's a very fine line between getting a good leg workout and not having sufficient recovery.
At times when I have a couple of weeks off my recovery time immediately improves and my legs get stronger dead and squat-wise.
I read on another site somewhere that the "stairstepper" is phenomenal at burning calories...supposedly better than an elipt or treadmill.
That said, I think stairclimbing is a very good ex.

Is it four days in a row or do you get one of the rest days in between? If you can keep it from four in a row I would guess you are much better off, and then just eat up to compensate for the excess calorie requirement, and make sure you rest on the rest days.
HevyMetal Sun, March 12th, 2006, 06:46 PM Yes it's four in a row.

Yeah that would be the difficult one. I've been thinking of how you might cheat up some extra rest on some of the days. I can't think of anything that sounds very convincing. If you have to go up stairs and ladders, it's not rest. Seems like you want to do heavy legs only on the fourth day of your job, and every other week or two.

Skoorb Mon, March 13th, 2006, 08:44 AM Some stairmasters actually have moving stairs, like a treadmill, except for stairs!
guava Mon, March 13th, 2006, 09:46 AM I used to live in a complex that was built over various hills and had several outdoor staircases. I liked doing the stairs in the middle of my jogging, because it meant a shift over to slower speed but harder muscle burn. I liked the variety. I don't specifically choose to do a stair workout, but if I ever go out jogging, I enjoy it much more if I can build stair climbing into the workout.

I got stuck living in a hotel in Atlanta on a work project for 8 months a few years ago, and made it part of my routine to run the stairs in the building. I worked up to doing 60 flights up and down (3x the building). Heck of a workout :D

White Goodman Sun, March 19th, 2006, 04:31 AM I've still been doing the stairs, 3-4 times a week...from the 12th floor to the 38th. I'm going to keep doing this for a while:tu:

What a workout!!!!Remember once doing a 35 storey hotel, up-three down-two. That was quite a killer.
a341_ Mon, March 20th, 2006, 10:14 PM If you want a good stair climb, try the Enbridge CN Tower charity stair climb for the United Way. Wow, that was death. Although I'm not sure if they still do it.

There's a guy in the rowing machine group I subscribe to who competes in these stair runs. He's got a good time in the Empire State Building run. I figure if I lose 25 more pounds I'll give it a try.
