Any tips on callus maintenance? I've got one that half way ripped off last night and need to not stop lifting. Should I try to cut the rest off or what?

It looks like I'm gonna have to go buy some gloves today so I can get through the rest of the week. I just always wanted to develop tough hands, and I think gloves will detract from that. But at this cost? I dunno... And if the things are always gonna rip off like this are my hands really getting tougher? That's some soft skin under there. doordude42 Thu, March 9th, 2006, 11:14 AM I know. It looks like I'm gonna have to go buy some gloves today so I can get through the rest of the week. You doing deadlifts three days a week or something? Those are tall freakin' callouses. Get 'em that tall and they'll tear off like that. Build 'em up slow so that they're big in diameter but relatively flat an you can sand your bannisters just by walking downstairs. Go get a pair of batting gloves. More durable than golf gloves but more supple than lifting gloves. They should give you the barrier you need to keep building callouses on your heavy lifts but not shred your pads up like that. M@ TarSeal Thu, March 9th, 2006, 01:16 PM All right. I broke down and bought some lifting gloves. I'll be able to do my arms day today. Yay! :tucool: I'm still firmly in the "no gloves" camp though! :nope: M@- good idea. They just grew like that. I do alot of heavy pulling though. DL, SLDL, Powerclean, The Bear, BB Row, one arm snatch, all once per week. Plus chins maybe 4-5x per week. :tu: M@ Thu, March 9th, 2006, 02:54 PM I do alot of heavy pulling though. I'd go with titanium. M@ TarSeal Thu, March 9th, 2006, 03:03 PM  You may want to look into having your hands replaced with some sort of pneumatic claw (http://www.tmgcgart.com/assets/images/JOLtestB.jpg). 'til then I'm stickin' with my current program. That's a beast of a routine. ;) M@ Andrew Thu, March 9th, 2006, 04:55 PM If you want people to think you're an alligator wrestlers, calluses are good, like closing the #4 CoC gripper would be even better. ;) TarSeal Thu, March 9th, 2006, 04:59 PM If you want people to think you're an alligator wrestlers, calluses are good, like closing the #4 CoC gripper would be even better. ;) EXCELLENT point. Boy, I've got a loooong way to go on that one! :D chicanerous Thu, March 9th, 2006, 05:18 PM I've read that you should sand your callouses when they get too large. Also, using chalk will prevent the bar from moving in your hand and therefore will help keep your callouses from ripping -- I believe. I hate rips. I haven't gotten one in a long time though, even though I'm not sanding. My hands are pretty dry most of the time though. TarSeal Fri, March 10th, 2006, 11:44 PM My hands hurt. Both of them. So just to update, I trimmed the excess callus that was left with a fingernail trimmer since it had a big sharp ledge hanging over the raw red part. Now it seems alot better. I took today off for healing, but unfortunately I have cleans tomorrow which should hurt pretty bad, then SLDL on Mon or Tues, and DL after that. Should be interesting:eek: (i.e. painful). Now I got a dry crack in the grove above my ring finger callus on the other hand. Dammit! I should've been moisturizing... |
