I was wondering, in my diet right now I'm taking as my last meal a protein shake , 1 scoop of ON whey protein with skim milk , and 1 ounce of almonds, is it worth it for me to spend some extra bucks and buy cassein protein for before bed ?
Thx!

You could, yeah, a lot of people prefer that. I myself just use a blend of whey, casein and egg proteins at all times of the day, whether it's a mid-day snack, a post-workout meal, or a pre-bed meal. (Nitrean.)

It's up to you, lots of people seem to prefer casein before bed, I know doordude does this for example.

Do you like cottage cheese? Cottage cheese is a slow-digesting protein source, and source of glutamine as well. A lot of people usually eat this before bed, I do anyways.

The idea behind using casein before bed is that whey digests too quickly, resulting in a wasting of amino acids and then a long period of time when you could potentially become catabolic. A slower-digesting protein or blend of proteins results in a more continuous stream of amino acid release into your system. Some additional fat will also slow protein digestion.

Personally I use one scoop of Micellar Casein and a scoop of a protein blend (whey, egg, and casein) along with some lecithin granules and fish oil.

I agree with the above, that whey isn't a good choice right before bed .... casein however, is an excellent choice. You can take the powder, or do what I do and just eat some cottage cheese.

It would be so much easier if I liked cottage cheese, looks like I'll buy the cassein protein tomorrow, any thoughts on brands ?

I personally use ATW Micellar Casein, although I'm considering switching over to TrueProtein.com since I've liked the blend I got from them so far.

I've also read a lot of good things about Optimum Nutrition Casein, although I've not personally tried it.

I use ON 100% casein pre-bed. It blends "thick" and is very filling. I normally blend it with either Almond or peanut butter. For any other time of the day I use Nitrean. If I was pressed for money and could afford only one, it would absolutely, positively, beyond the shadow of a doubt be Nitrean.:tucool:

Im just trying the casein thing now too. Do you all have any tips for blending micellar casein? Cause there aint nothing grosser than swallowing a bug chunk of unmixed casein **shudder**

Im wondering if its just my brand or batch or whether micellar casein as a whole is difficult to blend well?

I've never had a problem with mine blending well, although I do use a blender for all my shakes. Casein does end up being slightly..."chalky" is a good word, I guess, but other than that it seems to blend quite thoroughly.

I've been drinking all the wheys milk protein isolate, and yes, chalky is definitely a good word to use. I thought and was hoping that it was just a brand thing but I guess not. By far the nastiest protein I've ever drank.
