View Full Version : Do I really have to drink less water?
Rymanes Sun, March 5th, 2006, 12:56 AM Hi everyone,
I've always known I drink quite a bit of water, but I've never actually diligently measured how much until today. My roommate mentioned to me that drinking too much water can actually be bad. Rather than immediately research it I held off one day more so I could measure my average water intake without any bias. Anyway, my grand total for today, from 7:30am to about now (about 16 hours) is about 62 cups, give or take a few.
After searching the thread and the net, supposedly over 2 gallons or so is bad for you... But 62 cups is 3.87 gallons (or 14.66 liters). Is this amount of water really bad for me? And if so, to what should I try to cut back to?
I take 1000mg of Vitamin C and a multivitamin/mineral -- is this enough to combat the flushing of nutrients by my water intake?
I have two nice 1 liter water bottles that I drink throughout the day. At each of my six meals I drink at least both of them, and usually more. I got into the habit of it all when I was on a cutting phase and I needed something to allay my hunger.
Thanks in advance,
Rymanes
Wolfstriked Sun, March 5th, 2006, 01:07 AM I try to finish all my bath water everyday.
I have kidney problems and am told I drink too much H2O so there is truth in too much water.Id say a gallon a day is perfect.
M@ Sun, March 5th, 2006, 02:33 AM Holy clear piss batman! Does your roommate have to go on a long car-trip with you anytime soon?
I never thought I'd say it, but yeah...you're drinking too much water.
You're really pushing the threshold of hypnoatremia (http://chemistry.about.com/cs/5/f/blwaterintox.htm). Check the link and cut back a bit on the H2O. Just drink one of your liters at each meal instead and you're well hydrated with no risk.

TarSeal Sun, March 5th, 2006, 02:57 AM That's the most water I've ever heard anyone claim to drink. I'm not even sure I believe you.
TheLemonSong Sun, March 5th, 2006, 03:15 AM I used to drink one gallon per day...if you cound Crystal Light, I probably still drink that much...but *two* gallons?!
My fear here isn't that you're drinking too much water, but rather that you're drinking so much water that you're not
hungry enough to eat enough of what you should be eating...
Rymanes Sun, March 5th, 2006, 10:36 AM Hi everyone, thanks for your comments,
I have an embarassing and bizarre admission I need to make. After I typed that post, I drank my bedtime protein shake of a cup of milk + a scoop of whey + teaspoon of olive oil. After I did so, I immediately felt nauseous and felt so for a couple hours. I normally dilute the shake with water but this time I put all of that in the blender. Could the potency of the shake--especially the olive oil--have done me in, or is it really possible that I was "water intoxicated" after downing this last cup?
It seems bizarre to me that the day I count my water intake I go overboard. But I just recently started bulking and eating bigger meals more often per day, and I haven't really changed how much water I drink per meal from when I was cutting. Maybe I really have been drinking more water than I usually do?
The symptoms of water intoxication are "headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion," which I definitely experienced last night and even still a little bit this morning. Should I be alarmed?
I will definitely try to cut back. I've put one of my one-liter bottles away in my closet. :) Hopefully that will do the trick.
Thanks again,
Rymanes
Hort Sun, March 5th, 2006, 10:51 AM It sounds (as much as one can tell from a couple of anonymous web posts) borderline addictive.
4 gallons a day might be OK if you were walking twenty miles with a 70lb pack in 120 degree weather.
But from a health standpoint, 1-2 gallons daily is PLENTY.
You're not 7'8" and 400lbs by any chance?
Wolfstriked Sun, March 5th, 2006, 11:10 AM Heres a funny:tu: I have kideny problems that stem from my body not making a hormone thats an anti-diuretic.So my body is always making urine at an alarming rate.I get so thirsty that yrs back i could easily drink 4 or 5 gallons a day of liquids.I was asked to bring in a 24 hr urine sample and they handed me a 1/2 gallon container.I said thats not enuff no way and my sweet mother agreed:lol:I was given another 1/2 gallon container.I was told to use clean water containers if I need it.
I still remember the embaressment the next day hauling 3 gallons full of urine with my mother to the doctor:lol: When the nurse said "24 hr urine sample????.........just put it over there" I then pulled out my 3 gallons to everyones shock. No one could believe it.And to think I tried to cut back!!
When I was diagnosed with this,my doctor told me to cut my water intake to the most 1/2 gallon a day.Yeah right you idiot!!!If I drank that I got dizzy and so dehydrated.I yrs later found that alot of my excessive thirst was tied to my carbohydrate consumption. So now that I eat way less carbs, this is more manageable for me.
All I can say is to keep your water to one gallon. If you cant and your water intake isnt forced than go see a doctor.

Rymanes Sun, March 5th, 2006, 12:33 PM Three gallons of urine! Just uttering that is hilarious... Good god. :)
Hort-- no, I'm definitely not 7'8" and 400lb. ;) I'm 6'2" and 157lb currently.
I feel much better now from whatever happened to me last night. I'm counting my water intake again today as I try to cut back to see what I can get it down to.

We're about the same size, then. I was 6'2", 158 about a month ago... bulking up now. I get 1-1.5 daily. :tu:
Bart001 Sun, March 5th, 2006, 03:57 PM Vitamin C is water soluble. You're just flushing that out of your system, unfortunately.
rtestes Sun, March 5th, 2006, 04:19 PM I am a believer in water, but not that much. Hold your intake to 1-1.5 gallons. You are drinking too much. Have you been check for diabetes?
Rymanes Mon, March 6th, 2006, 01:08 AM Today I tried to make sure that I only drank when I felt thirsty, but the count is not much better, unfortunately. I ended up drinking about 55 cups, or 3.4 gallons, or 13 liters. This does not include the 4 cups of milk and the 2.5 cups of coffee I also drank. Maybe this is something I need to do gradually?
rtestes-- No, I have never been tested for diabetes. I don't know of any history of diabetes in my family. Reading through possible symptoms of it, though, I certainly do drink a lot of water and (consequently..) urinate a lot and frequently, and I am often tired throughout the day. Do you think this is something I should think more seriously about?
Thanks everyone,
Rymanes

Yes, I do. You aren't overweight, you are slim. But I would still check it out. Type I would be my concern
Rymanes Mon, March 6th, 2006, 01:16 AM Thanks for your reply. I'm 6'2" and 157 pounds, which is a BMI of 20.2 according to a website I found in a google search. But I will definitely look at this further.
Gordo Mon, March 6th, 2006, 07:24 AM 7% of the US population has diabetes (represents ~20 million). An estimated ~1/3 ( 6 million) do not know they have it.
