I'm sorry if music related threads bother people- but i'm bored out of my mind- and in need of new music :o .. so i figure this would be a nice way to go about it.

Pick one- or do both :

1) List 5 of your favorite bands/singers

2) List 5 of your favorite songs

For me -
1) Rilo Kiley. Jason Webley. The Postal Service. Mirah. Dresden Dolls.

2) Rilo Kiley - Paints Peeling. Juelz Santana - Oh Yes. Dresden Dolls - Sex changes. Gram Rabbit- Dirty Horse. Fat Joe - Lean Back

5 favorite artists/groups:
Jeff Buckley (one of the best voices IMHO), King Creosote, The Black Keys, Machine Head, Glassjaw... I could name loads more.

5 songs (hard one):
Elliot Smith - Twilight, Jeff Buckley - Grace or Lover You Should've Come Over, Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, The Black Keys - The Breaks, Mastodon - Hearts Alive.

These are just the ones I can put on at any time and enjoy every second of them. There are plenty others like that, but this is such a hard question considering the wide array of music I listen to and the size of my collection.

I <3 Nightmares By The Sea.
All of my favorites are "at the moment" favorites- they change a lot. And even though i have a wide variety of music- i Always want more :/ ..i think im obsessive compulsive about music.

Welcome to the club. I think my collection spans greater than 850 discs by now.

Try some Amos Lee, Nickel Creek, Iron & Wine, Elliot Smith if you haven't already heard some of their stuff.. Some is kind of upbeat chipper type of stuff and not so postal servicey. Good stuff though. I've been on a metal kick lately though.

Yea- i havent gone by discs at all.. so i best cross my fingers and hope this comp doesnt death all over the place. Around 6000 songs isnt something id want to lose right about now. or ever. :p
Upbeat is good. A great deal of Rilo Kiley can be upbeat- its what i enjoy about them. I was delving into the Indie side of things- and right now i think im spelunking in uncharted r&b/rap territory.
Metal was last year's habit ;p.

I've been listening to requiems and musical theatre lately. But:

Juno Reactor. Shpongle. Hallucinogen. Astral Projection. X-Dream.

CDs:

Juno Reactor: Beyond the Infinite / Bible of Dreams / Labyrinth
Shpongle: Nothing Lasts / Tales of the Inexpressible
Hallucinogen: The Lone Deranger
Astral Projection: Another World / In The Mix (second disc)
X-Dream: Happiness / Irritant

Velvet Acid Christ: Fun With Knives / Twisted Thought Generator are pretty good discs too.

Quicksilver Messenger Service: Happy Trails is one of my all-time favourite discs.

These are kind of completely opposite what you're listening to now.

The only thing ive actually d/led previously out of those has been Velvet Acid Christ- which simply couldnt be disappointing. I've heard of at least 2 others.
Either way- I'm up for all music- i used to go from hanson to cannibal corpse : i adore opposites :)

Side Note : im just going to hold back what i want to say because i cant give into Actual girlie thoughts.

What I'm going to list is completely the opposite of what you and the OP are listening to so that means I am some kind of super double opposite and I should get a gold star.

As it stands, my favorite 5 artists are (this changes a lot);
Telefon Tel Aviv ('pure' IDM), Dax Johnson (pianist), Faithless (triphop), A Silver Mt. Zion (experimental/post-rock), Eluvium (ambient/experimental + piano solos).

And my favorite 5 songs,
Craig Armstrong - Ruthless Gravity, Telefon Tel Aviv - I Lied, Tracy Chapman - Fast Car, DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World, Eric Clapton - Cocaine

I've heard all of the stuff you listed besides Hallucinogen, and I have to say I like most of it. The one arguement I always seem to get when I talk about music is about Juno Reactor. I thought Bible of Dreams was their best work, and everyone always disagrees with me and says Labyrinth was. I get the feeling most of these people have only heard Labyrinth because it's the latest thing they've released and they argue with me just because they desperately want to be right.

Bible of Dreams is their best work, IMO. I would say yours is probably an accurate assumption. A lot of people who know JR probably were exposed to them from the Matrix. I like Labyrinth and would place it as a second best, but it's not really descriptive of the rest of their work and, while a few of the songs are real gems, there are another couple that are just "driving" and rather repetitive without much melody or overlay.

Ok, I'll do both lists, but with the important difference that these are bands and songs I prefer at the moment. Who knows, I may hate this in some time...

Bands:
A Perfect Circle, Tool, Toto, Hocico, Slagsmålsklubben

Songs:
A Perfect Circle - The Hollow
Tool - Stinkfist
Toto - Endless
Hocico - Spit As An Offence
Slagsmålsklubben - His Morning Promenade

Enjoy!

I'll list my current fav bands/artists but not songs because I just find it impossible.

In no particular order...

1. Sufjan Stevens

2. Aimee Mann

3. Sigur Ros

4. The Flaming Lips

5. Henryk Gorecki - Especially "Symphony No 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs). I have been listening to this for years. I can just play it over and over and never get tired of it. I especially love listening to it while flicking through the book "Century" and reflecting on the photographs.

Also, a few albums I've been enjoying lately:

Stars - Set Yourself On Fire [2004]
Acceptance - Phantoms
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods [2005]
Sigur Ros-Takk
Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins [2005]
Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost
Our Endless Numbered Days - Iron and Wine
Explosions in the Sky - Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
Explosions in the Sky - How Strange, Innocence
David Gray - Life in Slow Motion

I totally forgot about Sufjan. I have everything by him (that I know of). The Christmas albums were great.

Yeah he is a genius. Most of the music I listen to is just a passing fancy, usually lasting only a matter of months or even weeks before it gets old. Sufjan Stevens is one of the few artists whom I know I will continue to enjoy for the rest of my life.

I also have all of his albums. If we keep up, it will end up costing a fortune when you take into consideration his pledge to dedicate an album to every single U.S State.

check out BloodSimple and Bullet for My Valentine.

BloodSimple has Tim Williams and Mike Kennedy from Vision of Disorder and the entire is CD is sick, made 100% better by the fact that it doesnt sound like they're just trying to clone VOD

I really like a lot of the rock bands that people have already mentioned (Disturbed, Tool, Godsmack, Perfect Circle, etc), but one group that I've been listening to for years and I never get bored of their music is:

http://onlineseats.com/upload/concerts/217_con_bt1.jpg

I love how they incorporate harmonizing melodies in their songs. They can go from mile-a-minute rapping to perfect harmony. They also have some of the most unique beats in the rap industry. What other rap group could do an acapella and not lose any street-cred? :tucool:
