I have found the only way I can loose weight is by counting calories and staying close to my goal. I have tried tons of programs from $200 to freeware. I came across a new one last week that I have really found to be the best out there IMHO.

The website is www.fitday.com

There is an online FREE logging section or you can pay $20 and get the download software version. I haven't used the website version but I have paid for the software version and use it every day.

I do not work for this company and make nothing from people joining. The sole reason I am posting this link is to help people trying to loose weight. Unless I use something to track my calorie intake I gain weight every time.

I hope this site is of use to some of you as much as it is to me.

Is it possible to input numbers using the metric system (I'm from Europe)?

Yes... I am Canadian and use the software in the metric system unlike our little USA brothers. ;).

So it's possible to enter values in CM's and KG's? :) Nice

Another question... does the software synchronize with the web-version of fitday or something?

Sounds like a good deal to me... $20 isn't asking much.. dirt cheap :)

I have tried a software called "Now you're cooking" it keeps nutrition data for over 6000 ingredients, making it very easy to get exact details of each meal you eat.

Unfortunately it's only english and I just can't bother translating each and every ingredient from my swedish recipes. It's not worth it, and many products is only sold on one of the two markets.

So if anyone can hint me of a software having swedish ingredients in the nutri-database I would be glad. I have plans to write one myself, but it sure takes some time.

Someone posted a thread about a spreadsheet for Excel they are sending out. I used it last nite and it is EXCELLENT! I think possibly better than what fitday offers.

Here are a few screenshots to see the main interface of FitDay PC:

To my knowledge it does not interface with the web-based version although I have never used the webbased one.

For a very thorough nutritional program, I also use Nutibase (www.dietsoftware.com) but I found the interface very confusing and too complicated. Appears to be more for dieticians then the "average Joe". I use both for different reasons. Been using Nutribase for about 2 years but when I found Fitday software, it had everything I wanted without the complexity. It's also better for exercise tracking then Nutribase IMHO.

Another good software, especially if you have a PocketPC is Twopeaks' "Perfect Health." It comes bundled with a desktop and PocketPC version, with a free trial available, and the whole product only costing $19.99

In addition to tracking calories it tracks some macro-nutrients like carbs, fiber and protien. You can also customize the food database (deleting all the MacDonalds snot) and you can add favorite meals, food items and supplements.

Likewise it's exercise manager has a selection of standard exercises, and although you can manually add custom exercises it doesn't have the flexibility of the meals database. Hopefully in the next version...

Personally I find the capability of being able to track everything that enters my mouth, or every exercise I do in the convience of a PDA quite nice.

I was actually going to ask if anyone knew of a website like this...now I don't need to. I just entered what I ate for breakfast and what I have packed for lunch...sheesh, I need to lay off those carbs. It really helps to see exactly what you're eating...59% of my planned calories for the day are carbs...let me work on that a bit ! ! ! Great post ! !

Quick question on FitDay: does the software (not the website) allow you to export the data, say, to Excel or even CSV?

A small update...

Sent a mail to them, and got this back: "Thanks for contacting us. We currently offer FitDay to US and Canadian customers only. We do have plans to offer FitDay to other countries in the future. Sorry about the wait."

I guess you didn't read much on that site eh? ;) . The first 2 paragraphs I think explain it's relevance...

In case you missed it, here's a recap directly from that page, "Instead of printing on paper, Paperless Printer creates content in PDF, HTML, DOC, Excel , JPEG or BMP files."

Thanks for the link, Supervivet.. :) It does seem to be a pretty good application, but because I'm a student, I can't afford it... the $20 for fitday is pretty much all I can afford right now

Don't forget about http://www.crosstrainer.ca/

This program has been around for years and its still being supported and improved. Very detailed and robust. Currently they are integrating it with the Palm OS.

hey...

i just checked out FitDay and it seems really good.. i just have a quick question tho... is there any way to accurately calculate how many calories a person uses up each day with out exercising.... according to what i entered into FitDay for my age, height and weight, i should be bruning about 3000 calories per day, and i generally eat less then 2500.. i work out regularly (weights 3 times a week for 30 min, and cardio 3 times a week for 20 min), but i dont seem to be losing any weight.. i guess i must have a really slow metabolism...

I have this as well and I totally agree that it is a very good program. I also use my PPC to track food/activities
