So I was on the AST Sports Nutrition Website checking out their products and Max OT program, which I found to be pretty interesting. All minor details aside I discovered that they have some decent products for sale...or so I thought. I was looking to up my protein intake during the course of the day and I ran into their Meal Replacement which is dubbed NyTro Pro 40. So I start doing a little research and come to find out what they call "Complex Carbohydrates" is actually Maltodextrin! Now I know that Maltodextrin is at least a Disaccharide, but they made it sound like it was a meal not a post workout drink. So I made the effort to call and I think I'll add here that their staff doesn't know crap because the girl on the phone was stuttering cause she had no idea what to tell me. She reffered me to some email, and 4-5 days later i got a email back with an explanation of this link:

Can someone tell me if this is total bullshit, or does it make sense? Cause I always thought you wanted to save your major insulin spike for after your workout during the timeframe where your body needs it the most, not inbetween solid meals.

sorry for the long post...!

Don't know how much of a good idea it is or isn't, but from what I've seen Maltodextrin is a pretty darn common ingredient in MRP's.

So I've noticed, the only one Ive noticed that has 'whole ingredients' in terms of the carbohydrate content is a certain version of EAS's MRP (they have like 3 or 4 versions...go figure) Any other comments?

Maltodextrin is not something you'd want to have except post-workout. It is technically a comple carb. But the body treats it as a simple carb, and quite a fast-acting one at that.

Maltodextrin is the main ingredient in PowerGel and Gu.

The instructions on these energy gels say to take 1 every 45 minutes, so that's about how long the energy will last in your body.

The addition of protein however will prolong the digestion of the carbs. Powergel and Gu don't have any protein.

Why not make your own MRP shake and control the ingredients?

Is it because you're on the road or in between class or something?

All the MRPs I've seen contain maltodextrin. I don't think you will find many (if any at all) that do not.

Protein powder and oats along with maybe some flax oil works nicely.

Or just make your own protein bars. That's what I do now and it works great, plus there's lfewer dishes to clean.

Core MRP does not have malto to my memory. Check it out and let us know-I believe that the carb sources are actually "food" carbs such as oats/barley. I know bodybuilding.com used to carry it-they still might.
