View Full Version : Anyone here like Dream Theater? BusyChild Thu, March 18th, 2004, 07:37 PM the music group that is. Its not for everyone but I was wondering if anyone here liked them. I'm going to two shows in April, Boston and NYC. Jimbo Thu, March 18th, 2004, 07:47 PM I didn't know they were still around. I used to be into bands like them and Queensryche. BusyChild Thu, March 18th, 2004, 08:20 PM Yeah they just came out with an album called Train of Thought. Some Dream Theater fans don't like it because its real heavy and people say it sounds like Metallica (not the latest metallica). But I think its one of the best they've made. Last summer I saw Queensryche open for Dream Theater, an awesome show to say the least. SLUDGE Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:39 PM the music group that is. Its not for everyone but I was wondering if anyone here liked them. I'm going to two shows in April, Boston and NYC. Yup, there are Dream Theater fans out here. The latest album is great. But then, I think oldschool Metallica is some of the best music ever recorded. guava Fri, March 19th, 2004, 06:26 AM I have a friend who likes Dream Theater so much he had it tattooed on his arm. Don't care for it myself, but I probably would have liked it in high school, in my Metallica and Queensryche listening days. Jimbo Fri, March 19th, 2004, 06:42 AM Last summer I saw Queensryche open for Dream Theater, an awesome show to say the least. Man, I've been out of it for a while. That's quite a reversal of fortunes if Queensryche is opening for Dream Theater. Someone told me that Chris DeGarmo isn't touring with QR anymore, but he's still recording/writing with them. Is that true? Jim Fri, March 19th, 2004, 09:42 AM I'm more of a Metallica/Iron Maiden/Judas Priest fan, haven't listened to much Dream Theatre  BusyChild Fri, March 19th, 2004, 10:54 AM Yup, there are Dream Theater fans out here. The latest album is great. But then, I think oldschool Metallica is some of the best music ever recorded. Definately. I think the last album I bought was reload and I listened to it once. I'm more a Master fan and I do like parts of Justice. BusyChild Fri, March 19th, 2004, 10:59 AM Man, I've been out of it for a while. That's quite a reversal of fortunes if Queensryche is opening for Dream Theater. Someone told me that Chris DeGarmo isn't touring with QR anymore, but he's still recording/writing with them. Is that true? Well Dream Theater has been making albums where as Queensryche hasn't. They might have produced one but IMO they're one album wonders. Don't get me wrong I respect them and like them but they don't seem to be able to recreate the awesome sound they made when they made it big Jimbo Fri, March 19th, 2004, 11:17 AM Well Dream Theater has been making albums where as Queensryche hasn't. I was into QR before Empire - I think they went downhill from there. Operation Mindcrime was a great album. This is really taking me back - I'm dating myself here, but anyone remember Fates Warning? Are they still around? Teg4e Fri, March 19th, 2004, 12:18 PM Many of my friends and I are big Dream Theater fans. I like their older stuff better, but I still listen to their newest ones, too. I saw them play at 9:30 club (D.C.) a few years ago on their 'Scenese from a Memory tour', and they were great! They played an awesome show with Change of Seasons as the encore. They went on at 10 p.m. and finished at 1 a.m.! Definitly one of the best concerts I've been to. TheRyanator Mon, March 22nd, 2004, 03:23 PM My two favs of all time are RUSH and Dream Theater. I spent most of high school with the blaring the blazing licks and drum solos of DT. Enjoy the show! :tu: take5 Wed, March 24th, 2004, 03:00 PM Dream Theater is my favorite metal band of all time and my favorite current song-based rock band (excluding all the weird, avant-garde stuff I listen to). Their last album, Train of Thought, is heavy, but it's still good ol' DT. Their double album before that, Six Degree of Inner Turbulence, is a wild ride which finds them really stretching out in the songwriting department with varying degrees of success, but it's a fascinating listen. Before that, they released possibly my favorite non-jazz album of all time, Metropolis 2: Scenes From a Memory. They've taken some criticism lately by folks who feel their recent efforts favor experimentation and self-indulgence over songwriting. I like the fact that it feels like we're seeing the creative process at work and enjoy all the music on its own merits. Not including their first album (which had a different singer and crappy production), everything DT has done has impressed me. Queensryche was NOT opening for DT, they were co-headlining. Fates Warning was opening, and the show was freakin' awesome! (I happen to be big fans of all three bands) Queensryche's following dropped off after Empire, which is a shame. Promised Land had some of their best songs on it: I Am I, My Global Mind, Lady Jane, Someone Else? and Damage are as good as it gets. Hear in the Now Frontier shows them trying to mature and update their sound with uneven results and is by far their worst album. Q2K tightens up and solidifies their sound and is an improvement in that direction. Their latest, Tribe, is the realisation of a more mature, relevant Queensryche. I did see Queensryche open for one band a couple of years ago: Iron Maiden. taffer Wed, March 24th, 2004, 04:06 PM oh oh me me me, i like dream theater! me and some friends even play a dream theater song together every year, last year we did erotomania, and this year we are doing under a glass moon i wish they would come down to australia, but it doesnt look like that is happening anytime soon also train of though was AWESOME! its the album metallica should have had, but didnt, with more skill tho :p go the chunk |
