Hey you guys-

What brands/types of protein powder do you recommend that are pretty decent tasting and not too pricy?

the best imo are easily syntrax brands (expensive and i suggest you get a sampler pack since not all will taste good to you) and nitrean (both vanilla and chocolate) from at large nutrition JSF forum sponsor.. my next huge order will likely be nitrean since i stocked up on syntrax from before, it's taste is so good but it can become too much specially if you use two scoops, also likely not as good quality as nitrean

For protein powders, Nitrean without question.

I havne't tried the Nitrean yet, but I'm in love with All The Whey (another JSF sponsor). One of my friends swears by the Parillo powders, but it is VERY expensive.

Cytosport Muscle Milk has the VERY best tasting protein powders out. A LITTLE high in fat, but most of the fat is in the form of MCT.

From the package: "MCTs, the predigested "fatless fats", are more likely burned for muscle energy and heat than stored as fat. 20% of human milk and Muscle Milk lipids are MCTs. MCTs also promote positive nitrogen balance."

I really like the peach mango myself.

I'm a huge fan of Opticen and Nitrean from atlargenutrition! I also like Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. Musclemilk is very tasty but I don't use it anymore due to its saturated fat content. I've just started taking ON's Pro Complex Gainer and it's descent in taste, but nothing beats Opticen/Nitrean.

Muscle Milk tastes great ... but it is not a protein powder. It is more of a meal replacement. There is a big difference if you are watching your diet closely.

Something to consider...Are you consuming protein powders by themselves, or are you mixing them with a carb or a fat? I'm looking at some of the products that are out there again, after mixing Ironmind's Just Protein with coconut milk (fat), unsweetened pineapple juice (carb), and a banana (more carbs) for the past few weeks. (Throw (1) Udo's Enzyme cap into with the mix 15 minutes before consuming)
Alot of people add heavy cream to their protein shakes...so I really don't know if Muscle Milk deserves to get slammed all of the time for it's fat content. If anything, it's just one less thing to add to your shakes. :D

Quite true, but not a good powder if you are cutting. If I add any fat it's going to be flaxseed oil... the good fat!

I like Nitrean , ATW and I bought Dramatize because of all the flavors they have..and at $20.99 per 5lbs.. So far I've tried Orange Dream.?
I need to buy more Nitrean ..because I like mixing my powders sometimes.. Need more carbs in this meal but not the total Opticean will give you ? use Opticean and ATW or other ?.. Stuff like that.

Personally, I really like the taste of All the Whey protien (chocolate and mint-chocolate). I usually mix this with skim milk. All the Whey is reasonably priced and has good customer service.

I also really like the taste of Syntrax (very cherry) protien. It is fairly expensive, but worth it ( to me at least) especially if you're mixing your PWO with water rather than milk as I do.

I use Nitrean because of the quality of the product. The taste is good (chocolate) in skim milk. I use this product strategically throughout the day and before bed due to the different types of protiens mixed in. Very good customer service also.

I have used Optimum Nutrition's protien (fruit punch). It is okay tasting when mixed with water (don't know about mixing with milk) and the price is very reasonable. It too is a quality product.

I like Nitrean from At Large Nutrtition. It is tasty, high quality, and affordable. I also like Metabolic Drive from Biotest. It is pricer but very tasty and high quality. It has a lot of micellar cassein in it. I generally only take it before bed.

Saturated fat is not bad in moderation. In fact, it is beneficial in many ways.

How crucial to a weight loss plan do you guys consider protein powder supplementation to be? I know I have a hard time consuming a lot of protein just from my regular diet.

I didn't slam MM, in fact I've said many times that my girlfriend uses it every day and she's getting really cut and defined now.

I don't like a high mix of carbs and fat that often, and I drink 2-3 shakes per day. Muscle Milk tastes disgusting to me in water, so when I mix it in milk it has a high fat and carb content.

I wasn't giving you crap...I think you may be bigger than me. I was referring to the bad rap MM gets from everybody. I mix mine with water, and 2TBS of heavy cream. Keeps the added carbs out of the mix.
I like Nitrean as well. I think it taste pretty good, and it's a great mix for the money.

:D

It does get a bad rep, especially if you mix it in water. I think it's a decent product. I just don't think it's as good as making your own meal replacements by using a straight protein powder.

And correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't MM use casein protein only?

I think that anyone that John Stone has on his boards........we are all good!!!!!!!!

Drop me a line and I will gladly send you a few samples to try, but honestly, you could not go wrong with AtLarge, Kent or us. Quality product at an affordable price, all three.

GNC has some fairly good 100% Whey Protein. I buy 6lbs at a time for about 25 bucks. The Berry Blend is pretty good with just water and the chocolate is fine when you mix it in a blender with some natty peanut butter. And there is a GNC in nearly every mall I've ever been to.

About the others, I've heard good things about AllTheWhey, AtLarge, and Kent Nutrition. I may try them myself as GNC's 100% Whey Protein has some other things in it that may not be too good for me.

I've never tried Nitrean, but I really love Optimum Nutrition. I never liked ATW because it didnt' taste great despite it being the best *mixing* powder I've ever had...ON is just what I'm used to.

I think it really comes down to what you get used to. I'm used to ON. I know how it fits in to my macros and calories, and I've come to like the taste. Thats how *I* decide on these things...but its possible that you're looking for a better *taste* or a diff. amount of protien than what you have..and if thats the case, I would look at the bodybuilding.com webstore and check out labels. More carbs probably mean better taste ;)

I have never tried ATW, but I have tried ON. If I was choosing between the two it would be ATW because I personally do not like ON. :(

ATW = slightly less protien (by 2grams) than ON; doesn't taste quite as good in my opinion but it's also lower in carbs so that is good; best mixing powder *ever*!

ON= slightly more protien; a taste i like; doesn't mix well at all

It's a trade off....I'm going to order some True-Protein as soon as I can figure out what a good breakdown is.

I absolute love ON whey chocolate. I also use Nitrean, but I use the two proteins differently. Anyway, in terms of taste, ON is excellent. Some people complain about mixability with ON, but I've never had a problem. It mixes very well (I put it in a bottle and shake it)....every bit as well as Nitrean.

I haven't tried ATW, but it gets great reviews on this site. Either way, I don't think you can really go wrong with either one.
