View Full Version : Crackers?
TheLemonSong Sat, January 21st, 2006, 10:37 PM I enjoy my cottage cheese as a dip with saltines or pretzels and I was wondering if anyone had any leads on some crackers with decent macros...it seems to me that there are types of breads with great macros (Ezekial, etc.) but few crackers with decent macros.

I buy these occasionally and think they're great. It's nice that they're made with unbleached wheat flour. Scan down for the nutrition data. Hope this helps.:D
Hort Sun, January 22nd, 2006, 09:16 AM Check the grocer's section with the fancier brands, organics, etc. Rye Wasa and similar are often almost fat-free, whole grains, high in fiber etc.

I agree these taste great, but IMHO, a serving (15 crackers) has too much sugar and sodium. And as you state, the first (highest) ingrediant is wheat (read: white) flour. Why, oh why, must they always add soooo much sugar and/or sodium to every product? Just my thoughts:)

My thoughts too...
I was thinking there might be some kind of melbatoast kinda thing that is closer to bread but in cracker form.
Maybe I'll look in to some matzah...

If you believe Consumer Reports, they tested crackers not to long ago. I am going from memory here and all I did was just briefly scan the article, but WASA Mulitgrain came out number one and Triscuit Low-Fat was second. They were ranked for nutritional value (I think it was fiber, whole grains, types of fat, carbs and additives) but not taste. All the WASA contains is whole grains and sea salt with no added fat, so they will have a dry taste.
The WASA is not bad if you like a strong grain flavor. Definitely not for the white bread eaters. I don't mind it, but it did take a little getting used to. They are dry and hard and will not have the taste of some of the best selling brands.
never2old Sun, January 22nd, 2006, 04:42 PM Andrew, have you heard of Terra chips (http://www.terrachips.com/)?
You might enjoy them as an alternative to crackers.
I'm only suggesting; I haven't checked their sodium numbers etc.
They aren't always easy to find in stores, either. And they cost more.
But the varieties are tasty, compared to crackers & other chips.
Triscuit, I eat already, but I get tired of them quickly.
I believe I tried WASA before too - similarly tired of them.
I like spicy stuff, so l like the idea of dipping cottage cheese,
then taking a little spoon of some salsa and topping the CC.
I'll confess: I do dipping with crackers, the wrong kinds, too much.
Next paycheck, I'm investing in some Terra chips!
TheLemonSong Sun, January 22nd, 2006, 05:55 PM Great suggestions here...I just don't liek to eat cottage cheese by itself...I end up either dipping carrots in it, putting it on crackers, or adding it to refried beans w/ salsa...

Yes, forgot about matzo's. I eat whole wheat matzo's often - only ingrediants are whole wheat flour and water - Period!
