View Full Version : Body cleanse/detox
Vinnys025 Thu, January 19th, 2006, 08:35 PM Has anyone ever done a body cleanse/detox? I have been reading up on some things and recieved different methods. I read it could be anywhere from 3 to 7 to even 21 days of fasting.
Some said to do a water fast, and others just said to do a juice fast. Which one is correct for a full flush of the toxins in your body?
Also, wont you have to take some supplements if your fasting? The body cant go up to 21 days without food....can it?
PS. If you have any articles please dont hesitate to post them. I cant find info on the internet that doesent have a "product" as their hidden agenda toward the fasting. Thank you.
Vinnys025 Thu, January 19th, 2006, 10:59 PM Well, i've never taken drugs in my life (except alchohol) and this is not why i'm asking about this. I just want to do a fast to detox all the toxins in my body that i've built up from supps and other stuff...NOT DRUGS!
sigakoer Fri, January 20th, 2006, 12:07 PM Just what "toxins" precisely is it supposed to remove from your body? Mercury? Lead? Cyanide? And how are they supposed to be removed -- through the skin, urine, what, where? And where's the proof that fasting helps such process at all? Maybe there's a drug, or a better way to fast to do it more efficiently.. where's the research?
Oh well. Fasting and "detox" is just a bunch of crock if you ask me. Starvation, either you name it fasting or whatever, will do you no good, and a whole lot of bad by stopping your metabolism and eating your muscle. Just go on and eat healthily, you don't need any "detox" to feel good.
getgot211 Fri, January 20th, 2006, 03:02 PM ^^^^ no need to detox
vonbrocklin Fri, January 20th, 2006, 03:53 PM People have been fasting for health and spiritual reasons for thousands and thousands of years in all or most ancient civilizations on forward. The current "body detox" buzz does seem to be largely a product-driven marketing trend, but I'm not going to argue with thousands of years of history to say that that "fasting" is a crock or that it will do you "a whole lot of bad".
Here is a fairly balanced article on the subject from webmd, and a couple other non-product links:

My advice is to search Google on terms like "fasting health research -detox" to get better results. The word "detox" appears to have been completely taken over by the Search Engine Optimization vultures.

"One of the body’s automatic maintenance processes is the destruction of foreign microorganisms. When looking through a dark-field microscope, countless parasites are clearly visible. I observed parasites living inside blood cells. Several could be seen eating cholesterol, and I was amazed to see one swim."
Parasites inside blood cells? What the christ. Those healthrecipes.com links are seriously loony.
Anyway. Whatever "toxins" you wish to "cleanse", IF your goal is to lose excess fat and preserve or increase lean body mass, like for most of us on this forum, then fasting IS detrimental to those goals.

I fully agree -- I think all this detox business is a crock. They never specify what all of these so-called "toxins" are that are building up in your body. The one article I read that was linked above suggested "environmental pollutants", but it was not specified which ones, their harmful effects, and neither were before/after samples taken to determine whether these "toxins" had been adequately purged from the body after a "detox". She also recommended herbal laxatives too.
In answer to the question, you don't need to do a "detox". Your body detoxes itself just fine. Eat clean and exercise and you'll be fine.
