8 Don'ts After A Meal

. Don't drink water immediately

· Don't Smoke - Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).

· Don't Eat Fruits Immediately - Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.

· Don't Drink Tea - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.

· Don't Loosen Your Belt - Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.

· Don't Bath - Bathing will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.

· Don't Walk About - People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake. (We should take a rest after a meal for half and hour).

· Don't Sleep Immediately - The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

I got them in email. Are these myths or facts?

/agree - that's the stupidest list I have seen in a long time with the exception of smoking - always a bad idea no matter when it is. :)

I don't know for certain, but I sure hope those are myths since I do almost all of them immediately after meals regularly. That would be bad news :)

I do believe that fruit should be eaten on an empty stomach. I dont remember the exact reasons why but I *believe* it was better digested that way.

Number 1 is definitely a myth. In fact, I believe that you should drink water after a meal. Filling your stomach with fluid will definitely make you feel fuller.

Number 2 is a bullshit!

Number 3, well for some they say that eating fruits directly after a meal may cause some negative reaction to the intestine... but personally I don't have problem with it.

Number 4 and 5 are ridiculous:lol:

Taking a bath? No problem with that

Taking a walk after a meal? In fact, I suggest it. Research shows that walking at least 15 minutes after a meal is beneficial for your weight loss goal. It'll raise your metabolism. And common sense being used, it's better than to sit in front of the TV.

Don't sleep immediatly? I think it's a great advice. Don't make it a habit to sleep after a meal (a huge one in particular). But occasionally done, it doesn't really matter.

To summarize, most if not all should be a fact, but unfortunately the main idea has been "hijacked", leaving you with nothing more than just myth...

Well, taking a hot bath would increase the blood flow to the skin, and to maintain blood adequate blood pressure blood flow to the digestive system might be reduced, like in exercise. But reduced enough to be a problem? Doubt it.

I've also heard that fruit shouldn't be eaten on a full stomach. The reason was that on a full stomach it'll take more time to digest, and so will start to rot. After a meal it could spend 4 hours before being passed onto the small intestine, where the sugars and nutrients of the fruit are absorbed. Here it could take another 4 or so hours passing through. So the question is, does the extra 4 hours in the stomach matter?
Fruits are my snacks, so I hardly ever take them right after meals anyways.

Some of these are great. The loose belt one is genius :)
"Don't Drink Tea - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest." Protein is, of course, initially broken down by HCl, an acid, in the stomach.

Isn't tea a base? (any chemists on board?)

At the risk of a Hijack, FOOD COMBINING in itself is a science.

There are many foods that should not be eaten with other foods.

One MAJOR offender is the Cheeseburger. The cheese forms mucus in the digestive tract (so does milk and cream). Then as mucus it covers the meat. This prevents proper digestion of the meat. What you end up with is a putrid half-digested mess in your bowels.

Another is combining something like pecan pie with a steak dinner. the sugar in the pie turns to acid and stays in the stomach because the meat takes way longer to process. The result? Acid reflux!

You could probably lose weight and live longer just by learning how to combine the right foods!!

I think it depends on the type of tea.

I love the science of food. I think it's a great subject. I'm also fascinated by nutritional genomics. I've known people who've gone years living in some sort of agony with doctors having no clue to what's wrong, and then one day one doctor tells him to take some mineral supplement, like magnesium or something. And just that small thing cures him. This was years ago.

It also explains the saying, "do whatever works for you." We all know that there isn't one best method of training, it's down to a person's genes. Obviously there are good and bad ways, and I think it's the same with diet.
A really intersting subject I think.

This is a complete guestimate on my behalf but wouldn't eating before sleeping just make you gain weight faster? I'd imagine that your body would just store more as fat or feed the repair of muscle tissue because you're not being active and are in repair mode (aka sleep) make sense at all? I can see the point of where it may not be fully digested since you're sleeping though aswell, not sure how the body works at night.

Actually, your body burns more calories while you're sleeping than it does when you're just sitting around.

I think that list is just ridiculous..haha, and my guess is that whoever sent you that e-mail is the same person who has the Ab Lounge, Abductor, 6 Second Abs, Ab Belt, Ab Roller, Abdominizer, Smart Abs, Ab-Doer, Ab-Doer II, Smart Abs, Ab Slide, Torso Tiger, Ab Cruncher, Ab Chair, Ab Shaper, and the Ab-Dominator..and STILL can't figure out why they don't have a six pack!!! (All of those are real, check eBay yourselfs)

Most of these seem like b.s.

On the fruit "Don't": This may be true if you're trying to eat a low-sugar diet. When I first struggle to lose weight (I was 260 at the time), my doctor put me on the "Sugar Busters" diet (it's kinda like the "South Beach" diet). The diet said to avoid eating fruit 30 minutes before a meal and 2 hours after because the slow digesting sugars in fruit will elevate sugar levels in the body.

From what I remember, the diet says something like this: Once your blood sugar level gets to a certain point, the body turns excess sugars into fat (or something like that). The sugars in the fruit, while they are "good" sugars, raise the baseline sugar in your blood for the entire time you're digesting the meal, which will cause your body to turn more of the sugars from your meal into fat.
