View Full Version : If eating out, where to go?
twin9mm Thu, January 12th, 2006, 10:03 PM Hey,
I've just started dieting and exercising, and, while I cook frequently, I go to school fulltime and work fulltime. I work at Applebee's, so one of my daily meals is off of their Weight Watchers menu, so I have an idea of what my intake from that meal is. Are there restaurants (not fast food joints) that post their nutrition information?
Also, what are your suggestions as to where to eat healthily.
Thanks all!

TarSeal Thu, January 12th, 2006, 10:20 PM Chain wise... I can't think of anything, sorry!
Actually Cracker Barrel. I get the grilled chicken salad, or the chicken salad salad. Very good raw veggies, with a boiled egg, a piece of cheddar cheese, and the chicken. They have a dressing choice that's just a bottle of extra virgin olive oil, and a bottle of apple cider vinegar. This is the best health dressing choice EVER at a restaurant!!!!
Delicious too!:tu: :tu: :eat:
Shane Reid Fri, January 13th, 2006, 12:31 AM Anywhere that sells subs or pita's is always one of the best choices I'd say. Besides that just take a look on the menu and try to pick out what seems to be healthiest.

Amen to that bro... I'm a huge EVOO & Balsalmic Vinegar fan... but Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother!)... now that's the shiznot.

I doubt most fancy restaurants post their nutritional info because each meal is most likely VERY differently prepared per cook, per day, etc.
It's best to either ask for substitutions (No cheese, dressings on the side, etc.) or bring a George Foreman Grill with you! :) HEH
Honestly, most places WILL try and accomodate special health needs... How tough is it to order grilled Chix breast and a side of veggies? If the waiter/waitress balks at that, walk out. (...and optionally flip a table over in mock indignation!)
YardleyBill Fri, January 13th, 2006, 08:54 AM This is what I do around here...
SUBWAY: either the grilled chicken breast or turkey on wheat, no cheese or mayo (or anything else fatty)
WENDY'S: the grilled chicken sandwich (i think it's called the ultimate grill or something). sometimes i treat myself to the spicy chicken with no mayo. it's not horribly high in anything (for me -- i am at 2600 calories a day in cut mode)
MCDONALD'S has a nice grilled chicken sandwich, just hold the mayo.
If the rolls are too much in the calorie/carb department, just eat one half, or none at all.
Almost every fast food joint has a grilled chicken sandwich these days. Anyplace you can get chicken or turkey without a lot of fatty stuff like mayo and cheese, you'll be OK.
BigDog Fri, January 13th, 2006, 09:03 AM You can usually get a look at the nutrition information for a restaurant by Googling it. It's not always specifically endorsed by the restaurant, but it usually gets you in the ballpark.

Except Quiznos. The are the worst chain I have seen about publishing nutrition info.
Like big Dog said, sites like calorieking have a pretty broad list if you cannot find it on the restaurant's own web site.

Subs or pita's?
misterjingo Fri, January 13th, 2006, 12:05 PM Google Dotti's Weight Loss Zone. She has a huge list of restaurants. Unfortuantely most only have Weight Watchers points but some do have cals with fat and carbs listed. I just tried checking her site and its down right now.

On a side note, I'm going on a cruise on the 27th of January (7 day cruise) and am not sure if cruise ships accomodate healthy eating - I'm sure they would. Do any of you have experience with this? Will I have to call the cruiseline ahead of time and let them know (kinda like airlines used to do before they took meals off of the flights).

I went on a cruise during Thanksgiving. They will have healthy selections (especially fish). My problem was the fact that you could basically eat at any time while you were awake. Just be careful with the portion control. Out of curiousity where are you cruising?
GraceGirl Fri, January 13th, 2006, 07:45 PM Amen to that bro... I'm a huge EVOO & Balsalmic Vinegar fan... but Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother!)... now that's the shiznot.
Wow, I love balsamic vinegar, but I've never even thought to try apple cider vinegar as a dressing!! I use it as a face toner too, lol, so I guess I could make it my dressing too! :D
GraceGirl Fri, January 13th, 2006, 07:48 PM And yeah, I'd say the best thing is to just ask for substitutions for healthier things. When I know when and where I'm going, I'll bring my own stuff with me. (For instance, I'll bring my own whole wheat tortillas to a mexican restaurant.) At least that way, you know what you're eating. I'm always so skeptical about all the "healthy" choices at restaurants these days because you never really know if the dishes are prepared as they're supposed to be.
I tend to just opt for a salad with a low cal dressing.

Personally, I'd skip the cruise! I'm sure they have lots of unhealthy things at the buffet... I'll go in your place and talk to the crew about some needed changes. Hmmm... yeah, that's it. Just, uh, slide your ticket on over here...
I'll even send you a postcard from Aruba!

HEH
Bragg's ACV can be used for almost anything! Solvent, Toner, Cleaner, Dressing, Whiskey replacement... :p
I love it!

Oh? Phew - that's a load off. To think, I'd have to suffer through 7 days of Caribbean paradise... :D I'm sure my mother wouldn't mind you being at her wedding - just be careful with my fiancee, she hogs the bed.
I'm gonna have to try the apple cider vinegar. I'm bringing my protein powder with me (and they have a full gym and pool, sweeeeet), and I'm gonna contact them (Holland America) about what meals they offer.
Thanks again for the help!
TarSeal Sat, January 14th, 2006, 09:48 AM I'm starting to think the way to go is bring a bottle of EV olive oil, and some apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar to use as dressing because restaurant dressing is almost always crappy for you.
leftyx Sat, January 14th, 2006, 11:09 AM See if this helps.
